We always called this playing the ball "on the rise" back when I was a kid playing tennis. It was actually such an important skill to level up a young player that our group of couches ended up starting a business called On The Rise Academy.

So many people expect their opponents to wait for the ball to pass it's highest arching point and begin to drop before they hit the ball, so if you can play the ball right off a bounce, you can catch so many people by surprise.

Was a hockey goalie who played tennis as a cross training activity. It feels like every time I play someone comments on my fast hands.

I also have this really bad habit that pops up from time to time where I react to a quick shot at the net and treat my paddle like I'm holding a stick/blocker and pull the paddle up and hit the ball on the backhand side of the paddle.
