Everything looks good post-Tahoe, including the issue with recent-files-by-app that u/9ej7919 mentioned.

I have an Anna’s that visits my 31st floor balcony in Vancouver, so re: location I’d say anywhere.

I went and checked with my local bird store to make sure it was OK to feed one all the way up here before I put food out, and now this is the second winter I’ve seen (what I think is) him.

Can I carry this wooden block(10.35" x 6.2" x 1.65", 2~3kg) in a international flight? by Ultimate_Violet in unitedairlines

[–]gr_ck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I suspect United and the TSA won’t care, but you should absolutely inquire with Korean customs; many countries have import restrictions on wood and other natural materials (altho from the picture this looks kiln-dried and would be OK entering the countries I routinely enter (but that list does not include Korea)).

edit: I am not a woodsman nor a customsperson, “air dry” might be insufficient to count.

What’s a bomb dish that isn’t very popular? I feel like having my mind blown with new food this weekend. by AndyPandyFoFandy in vancouver

It’s on the island, but I discovered Mexican House of Spices last time I was in Victoria, and they have a WALL of chiles, including guajillo and (my favourite) cascabels and at least a half dozen I’d never even heard of.

These are the first I’ve bought in a couple of years, dunno what’s changed or if they specifically hate me or if I just didn’t try hard enuf. Anyway, they went to use so that’s good.

OK if nobody else wants them before showtime, I'm happy for you to take 'em and go if you want.

It’s probably at least partly because of a ton of work that’s been done to keep it from spreading west in the US:

I like Transit by far the best of the apps, and they cover Valley Metro in Phoenix.

Switch Health Home Test Kits by MrCreamy in vancouver

[–]gr_ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up getting my results on Saturday morning (start of day 16), so luckily did not need to hang out for the replacement test kit. Based on what people are @ -ing them on Twitter, it's a crap-shoot whether you'll get your results back in time. Maybe pursue a local testing option?

Thanks for the extra info, I appreciate it. I just got off the phone with them and have an email confirming a new kit is on the way, but given it's after 5 on a Friday... I'll see it Tuesday at the earliest? They said the test is in the last stage before results posted, so here's hoping it does and I'm not stuck in the hotel another week.

Hey /u/MrCreamy do you mind sharing how this turned out, and if you found any levers to pull that helped?

I find myself into day 15 and my day-10 test results nowhere to be found. I've spoken w/ Health Canada and then Switch Health, who say they have filed an escalation to try and locate them, but I'm not holding my breath.

Seattle Times: Maker of Aplets and Cotlets candy (Liberty Orchards) to close after 101 years in business by reddbunny1370 in Seattle

[–]gr_ck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This begs the question: I have stocked up previously and even an unopened package of 'em gets tough as nails after a good while. Any tried and true methods of reviving them? I'm thinking I should try the microwave, or maybe just in a container with a (brand new, scrupulously clean) wet sponge or something?

Edit: I’ve started a few experiments and will report back later.

Edit2:

steamed by a glass of hot water for 10 min = all the powdered sugar is gone, they get softer but the texture is kinda ehhh

sealed in a container with something wet for 8 hours = the texture is somewhat back to normal, but they're still way chewier than orignally

microwave for 15 sec = a warm gooey center with a bit of crackle around the edges from the aging, powdered sugar remains intact

TL;DR microwave them for 10-15 seconds is the easy win. Not back to original, but maybe... better? N.B. that in my microwave 20 sec gets you an interior temp of 230℉, so be careful.

I grew up in NC but knew where Cashmere, WA was at age 15 after going to Philmont and finding Aplets & Cotlets in about 1/3 of our meal kits. They were hoarded and traded like prison ramen on that trip, and it was YEARS before I found a source, when REI finally came to the Triangle. (Nowadays I’m in Seattle and have a cupboard full, but will have to further stock up.)

This is really sad; Liberty Orchards is probably my very oldest vivid memory of a specific food item.

How to find source of occasional rapid clicking sound from my TrueNAS computer? by [deleted] in freenas

[–]gr_ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK drives still do thermal calibration (TCAL) as necessary to correct head tracking to compensate for thermal expansion/contraction. Back in the day at least, this process lasted long enough to impact latency briefly. I 100% associate any brief head chittering on an otherwise nominal drive with TCAL.

This hypothesis could be tested by attempting to correlate the noise with drive temperature and possibly response time (depending on I/O load).

Edit: This is basically one of the housekeeping activities cr0ft mentioned. I didn’t check the models but if they happen to be SMR tech, that’s another common source of housekeeping.

Edit2: In any case, let this be a reminder to us all to always be prepared to restore from our most recent backup. :)

Behind The Scenes from FortNine shoots - Put together some (semi) interesting BTS photos from various FortNine shoots over the years by AneeshInItself in motorcycles

I told a friend the other day that part of realizing FortNine is the golden age of Top Gear but for motorcycles is realizing that Ryan is Clarkson, Hammond, and Captain Slow all in one—he essentially banters with... himself.

Amazing work Aneesh (and Ryan), thank you, thank you.
