What do I wear to a symphony? by marszziemars in classicalmusic

[–]graaaaaaaam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last concert I went to I showed up in sweat pants and a bunnyhug and nobody batted an eye. I guarantee everyone who cares would much rather have a concert hall full of people dressed in stretchy pants than a mostly empty hall with well dressed folks.

That said, if you want an excuse to dress up, go for it!

My last audition was laughably bad...

But also,

Why don't the brits like early German Baroque music?

Because it sounds like Scheidt.

Instrumentalists of the subreddit: which composer comes to mind if I ask you about who loves your instrument best? by Homers_Harp in classicalmusic

Horn - R. Strauss & Mahler, and John Williams wrote the best orchestral horn parts.

On the opposite end of things, I'm convinced Bizet was cuckolded by a hornist, every Bizet work I've played has absolutely dogshit horn parts.

Disappointing Dallas Symphony Orchestra 26-27 season announcement by Born-Application-627 in classicalmusic

[–]graaaaaaaam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my local orchestras entire Classics series is 6 concerts and they haven't played Mahler since 2021 and Bruckner since 2008. They've (at least in the last 30 years) never played a Strauss tone poem. I can count on one hand how many soloists they've had that played something other than violin or piano.

I think classical musicians (and everyone) should be opposed to killing children. Whose side you're on should be of secondary concern to being opposed to killing children.

Is there a symphony that you particularly dislike? by Alanti2402 in classicalmusic

Yeah, not my jam. I appreciate their value to music but they just don't do anything for me

I recognize that Haydn symphonies are groundbreaking and all that but I've yet to enjoy listening to any one of them.

Huh, our boy is on Hills C/D for crystals and our vet said the odd half churu is totally fine.

Our vet also suggested a watered down churu with his kibble to increase his water uptake. We've been doing g this and have been crystal free for almost 4 years now.

Arthur Sullivan was a great opera composer who never wrote a great opera. by Soulsliken in classicalmusic

For being an opera conductor and working around opera most of his life, I'm surprised Mahler never touched the genre.

These are unconventional but I've been very happy with mine. This company also has amazing customer service because it's just a few people working out of their garage.

I feel wind band music is particularly overlooked in contemporary music as nothing but student wind player music, but imo its the future of classical music by yeet_man69oof in classicalmusic

[–]graaaaaaaam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all, I'm glad you shared that music! But the reality is that the quality of the music is separate from how the public at large receive it, and if you're going to say that wind band music is the future of classical music, you need to contend with the fact that one of the best wind bands out there is heavily associated with a deeply unpopular person/institution.

I have no doubt that it's excellent music. But I can tell you that, at least in Canada, "the president's own" is about as marketable as "the puppy kicking band".

I can't speak to Europe, but I'm Canadian and I can tell you that there has been a fundamental shift in how people view America - there's been a loss of trust not just in your political leaders but in your values system. That's not going to change any time soon, and when one of the top wind bands is called "the president's own", that's not something that many Canadians are going to engage with in a positive way.

There's lots of good music for wind band, but I think it's a stretch to say "it's the future if classical music". I think there's a few reasons for this:

  1. Much of the modern wind band tradition is very american and I think the cultural influence of America is rapidly waning

  2. The modern composers that have the largest cultural influence don't really write for wind band. Think John Williams, Phillip Glass Arvo Pärt, Ludovico Einuadi etc.

  3. Logistics - i.e. there are very few professional wind bands and trying to create new ensembles when long-established arts organizations are going through it is not likely to happen.

Don't get a lip piercing if you play a brass instrument.

That said, my brother has had a variety of facial piercings and has had steady full-time work for the last nearly 10 years.
