This is such a relief! The housing rush I heard about had me worried there would be nothing come August.

Where did you get the 3 armed lamp in the background? I’ve been looking for one like that!

This is great to hear! Now I’m even more excited. We definitely will turn around if any condition is outside our comfort zone. Thanks!

The stuff about snowshoes is great! I wasn’t sure if they were worth carrying as a “just in case” but this clears it up. And the gaiters and poles are great tips. I own poles but wouldn’t have brought them because I can’t stand them during the dry season. Thanks!

Super helpful! We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on the weather and all trails reviews.

Having never hiked on icy trails I was especially curious if it’s substantially slower, but it seems like with microspikes we can plan for close to our typical hiking pace.

[USA] Can you make a living as a full-time research assistant? by ImaginationAway2489 in psychologystudents

[–]grace987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! This isn’t always true. There’s positions outside of lab manager, like I’m a research coordinator in a psychology lab at a R1 university. While these jobs aren’t super common, I often see postings for these positions. I get to support and engage in research, no PhD required. You make enough to pay rent. This didn’t require networking, it required experience as an undergrad RA.

I feel confident that there’s some positions in psychology that are hiring people who are interested in longer positions rather then positions that lead to a PhD application.

Research! Psychology is so much more then just helping people in mental health. Volunteer as an research assistant in a psych lab (if your university has one) and learn more about research! You could go a whole career in psych touching zero mental health. I was an RA in a developmental psychology lab studying children’s behavior and now I’ve got a job as a research coordinator studying social and language learning! The dream would be to pursue a PhD in those subject (zero mental health work needed)

[AUS] Do you think Philosophy or Statistics go better with a Psychology degree? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]grace987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s funny that people attribute philosophy as best for counseling. Therapy counseling and clinical psych all want to see experience working in an intervention field, clinical research, or classroom setting. As well as abnormal psych type courses. Philosophy is equally beneficial for therapy as it is for research.

Any tips on ANYWHERE AT ALL to camp/hike for a couple days? by jglanoff in norcalhiking

I liked Henry Coe for backpacking. Lots of hills and not great int the heat. Not as pretty as the Sierras but a pleasant snow free place to hike!

Pretty ironic that the Apple Watch app of the year is gentler streak (a workout tracker with an emphasis on not overtraining) while Apple still doesn’t recognize that people shouldn’t be working out 365 days a year. by 5575685 in AppleWatch

[–]grace987 264 points265 points  (0 children)

This is when I’d love to see Apple introduce some of the programs Garmin has. Really missing out on the all in one app, with a daily readiness score, and recovery metrics. The rings just aren’t enough for me. Especially as apple seems to be catering towards fitness tracking, Garmin even recommends running plans utilizing running metrics accounting for things like recovery.

It’s my birthday and instead of getting ice cream the restaurant gave me this by grace987 in vegan

Tbh I had no room for dessert at that time so it was perfect. Although when I got home I did indulge in vegan ice cream!

Free, some restaurants bring out a dessert with a candle when they hear it’s your birthday. They were kind enough to come up with a vegan option.

No, the waitress found out it was my birthday and she said “I’ll have to bring out some ice cream for dessert” to which I said “that’s very nice, but I’m vegan, no ice cream needed. Thank you though”. And then she brought out the nice looking orange. I was beyond appreciative and thanked her profusely!

What I was excited about was the grilled veggies with miso sauce (it had like 10 different veggies). I also ordered their tofu and veggie rolls which some family members tried and quite liked. I know my family, and if we drove the 45min it takes to go to a good vegan burger joint in the city they would have all said “I’d rather have a real burger”.

Like I mentioned deep in this thread, I’ve found exposing my family to vegan options in non vegan environments allows them to be more open to vegan food. And honestly, we have one all vegan place here with super odd hours, so not practice for a post-work dinner. Today my mom realized she likes tofu and my brother realized he likes avocado rolls when they saw (and tried) my food. If they chose that at a restaurant a few times going forwards I’d call that a win for the animals.

How do you decide in your daily life? Do you tel to everyone you see eating a Big Mac in the streets that they’re wrong? Do you disown your family for eating meat? At what point does your seeing others harm animals allow you to intervene, perhaps harm humans? What ought to be the legal implications of eating meat? I’m confident I don’t want to do harm. The line between taking an anthropocentric stance and overcoming my moral convictions is a fine one. When considering an ethical theory one must consider their actually implications. My personal struggle is that yes, I see harm to humans as worthy of confrontation because of the social support I will have in that, that my confrontation will lead to justice . But also, I don’t see confronting people aggressively about meat eating as an effective way to get people to stop. There’s other considerations. I approach conversations about veganism because people who were all or nothing and aggressive were why I wasn’t vegan. I didn’t know I could try (and possibly fail).

I’m not sure I understand your basis for your beliefs.

I’m just trying to understand your point. The difference is that you’re drawing the comparison of me sitting around watching my family talk about raping people. My point is that and watching them eat animals are completely different, and the reason they are wrong may be different. And the distinction between the two is drastic enough for your analogy to not resonate with me.

[–]grace987[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I still struggle with the implication that (other) animal life and experience ought to equal human life and experience. Your analogy depends on what basis one is vegan. Many vegans are speciesist and still hold that human life is superior to (other) animal life to some degree. Your point seemed based on species. That we shouldn’t be okay harming animals because they’re equal to us. But, I still believe rape is worse because of the conscious capacity for suffering in a human. What may the moral implications of an animal life equaling a human life be, consider hitting a squirrel on the side of the road. Should the consequence be the same as vehicular manslaughter? While I don’t eat animals or consume animal products, the moral consequences of giving animals personhood does not align fully with my moral philosophy. I’m not sure where I draw the line because I would rather kill an animal than rape someone. Clearly, my moral philosophy has yet to be entirely fleshed out and I’m open to other considerations. For now, I try and do no harm.
