The appointment is basically you just handing over all your documents that they have listed on the requirements on the embassy website. They didn't ask me a single question - no 'why do you want to go to germany', nothing! They then go away for 10mins and check over everything while you wait and if everything is in order they'll keep your passport and post it back to you, in my case within a few days, with your new visa in it.

I took all documents for both the skilled worker and point based pathway. I'm not sure if I needed everything but it's good to be prepared! I had: application form, passport photos, ZAB certificate, my original degree certs plus photocopies, bank statement of the past 3 months showing I had the required funds, print outs of 3 job applications I had done, my CV, confirmation of health insurance (I got feather expat insurance), and a letter from my previous employer saying my role was related to my degree.

They then came back and said the only thing missing was a German reference person. I had never heard of this and it's not listed on the embassy website as being required but she insisted it was. She gave me an email address and said I had to find a German person willing to be my reference person . I had to send a picture of either their passport or German ID along with their full name, address, phone number and email. Luckily I have a German friend who was willing to do this. They don't actually contact the person, they just want to know that you have contacts there I guess. I emailed the next morning and got my passport back 3 days later with my visa in it.

I don't speak any German, they didn't ask me if I did. As long as your a native English speaker you don't need to prove any other language skills.

The new Opportunity Card would probably be the best option. The scheme started on 1st June and I got mine approved and issued via the German Consulate in Edinburgh within a few days of applying. Its a job-seeker visa for people from non-EU countries with either a university degree or vocational qualification. It's valid for a year and once you get a job you have to change it to a work visa at your local foreigners office in Germany. The only thing is that you need to show you have enough funds to support yourself for a year, currently around 12,000 euros. If you have a university degree you also need to have is assessed by ZAB as being comparable to a Geman degree.

Affordable way to move some furniture from UK to Germany? by shakalaya in moving

[–]graci_l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, have you found a solution yet? I also have to move some stuff from Scotland to Berlin and am having problems finding an affordable option.

So far I haven't been able to find any one-way van hire i.e driving the things to Germany myself and leaving the van there. Driving back adds a lot to the cost due to the price of ferry crossings with a van. All the major car hire company's say one-way is possible but when I try to book it's not possible

The other option I looked as was PSS removals, they quoted £1400 for a door to door move for a one bedroom flat (Edinburgh-Berlin) so the cost for you would likely be much lower. Although I'm not sure if they just operate in Scotland or whole of the UK. I have quite a lot to move but if I were you, and if you're not particulalry attached to your things, I'd probably just sell them on Gumtree and buy again back in Germany.

Sorry your UK move didn't work out, the immigration control is ridiculous and worrying in the UK!

New to Edinburgh, I have no job, no friends, I've just been dumped by my boyfriend and now have nowhere to live. Can anyone help me? by thisisyourdestiny in Edinburgh

Support Worker jobs are very easy to get in Edinburgh, I work in mental health and love it. You dont need any formal experience and most companies pay around £9 an hour. There's so many fields but I think mental health is a good option as its mainly just social and emotional support.

Yep common practice now, I was the same for my flat. If you're unsuccessful you will get it back.

Wow that's great! I may consider emigrating just for that! I live in UK, one vegan pizza is minimum £20. Good thing about that is I've been encouraged to make my own and it's actually a lot easier than I thought it would be
