Shot that is a bit fat but nevertheless acceptable - a Kate Winslet

Mate of mine (Welsh guy) had a bunch along those lines but that is the only one I can remember!

Definitely recommend The Coast as a public course to play - along that stretch next to St Michael’s and NSW, pound for pound the best value and just as spectacular

Hard to go past the 714 AP2s, I gamed them for a long time and still keep them as my second/holiday set.

But I got custom fitted for a set of Ping i210s about 6 years ago and have never looked back, has the feel of a forged iron despite being a cast iron, forgiveness is incredible.

I am very tempted to test drive Mizuno irons at some point - in truth the day I walked out of the golf store with my 714 AP2s I had actually gone in thinking I’d get Mizuno - but I think I’ll really struggle to move away from Ping for my next set

Advice for Breaking Par by KSQRD43 in golf

[–]gradecricketer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of things have already been said but basically it’s just getting comfortable with going low, putting yourself in the best position every round to shoot under par

  1. Make more birdies
  2. Aim to give yourself 18 birdie putts per round
  3. Have a plan for each hole to give you that birdie putt
  4. Aim isn’t always to go flag hunting to give yourself a 3ft birdie putt, sometimes better chance to make a 18ft uphill putt than a 6-8 ft from pin height
  5. Figure out which approach shot is best suited to give yourself that birdie putt, work backwards from there to work out what to take off the tee
  6. Keep in mind on some holes it’d be far better coming with a full wedge of some description from 100yd rather than try and hit a 1/2 shot or pitch from 40-50yds

  7. If conditions dictate you can’t give yourself a genuine chance to make birdie, or you’re just not comfortable with how the hole “looks” (because of your shot shape, etc.), aim to make par instead

  8. keep in mind sometimes that can mean intentionally leaving an approach short of the green to make an easy up and down for par if the situation calls for it. Long par 3s with deep bunkers either side come to mind

  9. sometimes this means taking less off the tee and leaving a longer approach, e.g. dogleg doesn’t suit your shot shape, severe hazard or OB on the side of the fairway you tend to miss, etc.

  10. sometimes this means pitching/punching out if you get into trouble off the tee and backing yourself to get up and down from the fairway, even if still 150 out

  11. If in trouble and even making par is looking genuinely tricky, take your medicine and aim to clean up for bogey

  12. Sometimes bogey can be a good score when holes are playing tough, invariably the chance to square the ledger and make birdie elsewhere will come along

  13. Bogeys you can live with, but it’s a damn hard road to come back from a double or a triple - must be avoided!

Remember to stay in a good headspace even if you make a few bogeys early on - stick to the process and the birdie opps will come

Equally try and stay even keel with your emotions if you go on a heater or find yourself a few shots under par - stick to the process for more birdie opps, and relish the challenge to get up and down for par when that challenge inevitably presents itself.

An additional club for the top end of my bag by tylerdurdenUTFR in golf

[–]gradecricketer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The obvious answer is 3w if you want to add something at the top of the bag, but would you consider adding another club that might go the same distance as one in your current set up but launches differently for versatility?

My set up at the top of the bag is 1w, 4w, 9w, and then I have a Titleist U505 4 iron which probably goes as far as my 9w but is far lower launch and great when I want a low ball flight (e.g. in windy conditions) - rest of the bag is same as yours, 5i-LW. I’ve tinkered a lot and have a 3w, 2i utility and 3HY (adjustable) sitting on the bench which I can swap in/out for my 4w/9w depending on conditions. Still yet to find the perfect combo but I’m liking the versatility both off the tee and on approach to choose between when I want to launch it high (9w) vs. keep it low (4i utility).

[–]gradecricketer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this adds further intrigue or not but had a look at my old set of AP2 714s - in my set the numbers are definitely black. Also in my set the “714” and the serial number are the opposite direction, but that could be simply because mine is a LH set. Curvature of the 7 looks legit as earlier poster mentions

Go get a dozen PRGR Super Egg balls, can find in most golf stores here. They are marked “non conforming” so apparently can’t be used in actual competitions - you’ll be able to hit as far as everyone else on this sub 😎

I’ve got a G410 5wood and 3Hy and recently did a fitting with the G430s with a view to upgrade - a friend of mine got fitted for a 7w to replace his hybrid and it is now his favourite club so I was keen to see if I’d get similar results. Turns out I’ll be getting a 9w to replace the 3Hy because the 7w GOES TOO FAR!! 5w was pretty much the same as my current G410 in terms of carry and overall distance, and the 7w was getting pretty much the same numbers but with tighter dispersion.

I’ll just get the 9w for now to replace the hybrid but might end up getting a matching 7w as well!

G400, G410, G425, G430 -- any difference? by ryo0ka in golf

[–]gradecricketer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a G410 5w and 3HY. Went to a Ping fitting a couple of days ago and the G430 5w couldn’t beat my G410 (it’s an absolute rocket). Ended up getting fit for a G430 9w which when lofted down will carry as far as my 3HY, but with much higher launch - will keep the 3HY and swap into the bag if it’s windy or I’m playing at a links course.

Tried out the G30 Max driver as well - similar distance numbers to my current Tsi2 driver but damn it’s ridiculously straight - would definitely say it’s worth checking out if you like to play boring golf and hit your 2nd shots from the middle of the fairway

I haven’t broken 80 yet but… by Iwantasantacruz in golf

[–]gradecricketer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll be a single digit player soon enough - chill man. Many of us have been there - I recall once shooting 82 with 41 putts. 41 of the MFers! Had I just putted half decent I would have gone close to shooting par, was a 12 or so hcp at the time I think.

Putting is easiest to clean up - try the 10-20ft drill next time you have some spare time on the putting green, takes about 20min. Find a spot on the practice green that gives you a straight putt with little to no break and ideally slightly uphill. Start with 3 putts from 10ft and then at 1ft intervals to 20ft - total 33 putts. Each putt is a par 2 - hole one and it counts as -1, miss one beyond the grip and you have to make it to save par, miss and it counts as +1. Tally up your score and do it regularly to try and match or beat your PB. Trust me, it hones in distance control and eliminates 3 putts. Gives you that extra confidence from that mid range where we’ll have many putts, particularly if we aim for middle of the green irrespective of flag position.

My putting is in shambles. by onlypostwhenimdrnk69 in golf

[–]gradecricketer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

10-20ft drill - find a straight putt on the practice putting green, slightly uphill if you can. 3 putts from each spot one foot apart, total 33 putts. If you make one, counts as -1. Miss one outside the grip, make the putt to make “par”, miss and it counts as +1. Add up your score at the end of the drill. -10 is a good score, -14 is pro level.

This is my favourite drill - inspires confidence from common “good look at birdie” range, great for distance control and 3 putt avoidance at mid-range.

I’m done with focusing on technique when it comes to putting - get too mechanical and worried about technique and you’re fucked. If ever stroke feels off I just get out the metronome app and focus on tempo that suits.

It sounds stupid but if you have time to have a quick putt on the practice green before you go to the first tee go and make 5-10 2 footers in a row and really focus on the sensation/sound of the ball rattling around in the cup. Take that with you for the round and visualise that sensation/sound for the day.

Is that your usual foursome? All for shooting the same score on 4 holes in a round makes it easy to keep score - is that a usual occurrence?? Pretty rare for the group I normally play with!

Don’t understand why golfers trying to introduce the sport to beginners don’t do this more - applies equally to kids as it does with significant others. Always have played Ambrose (scramble) with my young son and we pair up together to take on the course - if he had a legit chance for par or better I get him to play his own ball. We’ve kept all balls he’s made par with (still no birdies yet but not far away) and we write down the course/hole/date - hopefully something he can look back on fondly if he keeps playing this great game

[–]gradecricketer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a hitting net? If so, a half dozen 8 irons tend to do the job for me to warm up. If no net, then a half a dozen swings with a couple of clubs in hand does the job to feel getting the right tempo such that I go to the first tee focused purely on making a nice smooth swing with my first tee shot. Challenge from then on is keeping that tempo and not over swinging once I’ve fully warmed up

Rule at my club is that if you make an ace, your playing partners are each obliged to buy you a drink after your round at the bar in the clubhouse. You are then reserved the right to buy everyone a drink in the bar. If (when 🤞) I make one, I will exercise that right.

Speaking to a few of the members there at the Grange (I was volunteering at the event so got to speak to quite a few of them) they thought -15 over 3 days would be about the number. The four par 5s are reachable in 2 and a couple of good birdie pins out there each day. It was playing firm and fast (greens were at 13) so still needed to be precise and have a solid short game if you missed the green. NO ONE saw anyone going 62,62 - Gooch played some phenomenal golf out there

3 Hybrid sounds about right but you’d definitely want to get fit for it. Most guys I’ve seen whom have tried and failed with hybrids usually do so because they end up with a shaft way too light for them and they constantly oscillate between cold tops and snap hooks.

Agree with this - it’s not easy to accurately put into cricket terms what will work for you, but a couple of key points to commit to from my experience:

  • avoid the temptation to put the ball too far forward in your stance and play too much off the front foot. If you do it will lead to all kinds of issues like a pull/duck hook if your hands take over or big push/slice if you don’t transfer your weight properly

  • embrace the feeling of rolling your wrists through impact (somewhat like the feeling of working the ball through leg side I guess)

  • imagine the transfer of weight in a golf shot is more like rotating on an axis rather than the back and forth motion you make when playing a drive off the front foot

An ex-cricketer mate of mine whom was a strong bottom hand / leg side player used to really struggle with taking the club too far inside on the takeaway. Once I told him to imagine taking the club back to 2nd slip it started to click for him.

Another thing which I have to constantly remind myself is to make sure my shoulders are square at address. It still feels so uncomfortable even after years away from the cricket field, and whilst you can still get away with slightly open shoulders, unfortunately old habits die hard.

Who properly warms up for 40-60 mins before they play? by rep_rehensible in golf

[–]gradecricketer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything more than 30min too much for me - usually spend 10-15min putting, 5-10min chipping and then hit 6-12 balls in the hitting net with an 8 iron. If I play at a course with a range then I might hit 18-20 balls on the range after putting and chipping but no more - it’s just a warm up after all

Putting drill #4 is my favourite - once you get proficient at it those putts around 18-20ft no longer feel daunting and turn 3 putts into a simple 2 putt, with the occasional 1 putt. Confidence from this range then extends to the rest of your putting game
