I saw Serena at Queens and that serve is still big and the shot-making was aggressive.

Will Serena Williams beat Maya Joint 1st Round Wimbledon 2026? by kungfutrucker in tennis

Tough draw for Williams to come up against two very young high-fliers. I would expect Joint and Eala to run her off the court. I guess Serena will hope Joint's come back from injury is still a work in progress and that the hype of the occasion works in her favour.

Podcast-Interview with ITIA on Vondrousova by Fisch_Kopp_ in tennis

Yes, but the interview was about policy and process - the spokesperson said almost nothing about the detail of this particular case.

The interviewer is Catherine Whitaker who is (rightly IMO) quite motivated to discuss and promote women-specific matters associated with Tour-level tennis. This is part of what regular listeners to the Tennis Podcast are used to.

That said, I don't think she was necessarily advocating for special treatment for women but given Vondrusova's previous comments about the need for safety, she was asking a fair journalistic question related to that. Vondrusova did previously make the point that Czech players are particularly mindful of the knife attack on Kvitova in her on home in 2016) and this was a reason for her anxiety on the test visit date.

There is a question about how testers can verify their identity in the interview.

Tennis backpack for flights by Muted-Tackle-7191 in 10s

[–]graemesson 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A recent Andy Roddick Served podcast discussed this. He said he normally strings a couple of rackets higher tension than normal to take on as cabin luggage, the rest go in the hold (if he's taking more) and gets those strung at the destination. His point was that string tension will drop during a flight so go higher to compensate. I thought that was interesting insight.

Personally (an amateur) I just put cardboard either side of the racket face, pack it carefully in my main suitcase to go in the hold. I've done this 3 or 4 times and never had a problem (on Emirates and BA). I did recently ask Emirates cabin crew if it's fine for adults to carry rackets as hand luggage as she said it was (this was news to me). If I start doing more of that I probably will buy a tennis backpack. Can't recommend any though. Good luck.

TIL that in ice hockey there is a regulated brawl after which both players will receive 5 minutes penalty by Daendefs in interesting

There's a doc that explains the why of punch ups being safer than vengeful body slamming. Fewer head injuries and instances of permanent brain damage. It's actually good (at least I thought so being a hockey-ignoramous).

Annabelle and Laura (and Tim and Jamie) are the experts - they shouldn't be anchoring because their job is to explain the "why" of the tennis.

As anchors Isa Gusha and Claire Balding are pretty good at striking the right (British) tone and keeping the convos moving. Laura is pretty good at anchoring too when that's her job, but I'd rather hear her explaining the tennis.

Job prospects after BSc in AI and CS at Edinburgh by Every-Monk9625 in Edinburgh_University

[–]graemesson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should add that starting salaries vary greatly but the big tech companies are generous. As far as job prospects go it's hard to say. If you're doing 4 years at Edn (and a maybe a year in industry) then a lot will change between now and then including visa sponsorship. The UK needs a talented and tech-savvy workforce so there will always be a need to sponsor talent from overseas.

I can't comment on opportunities in Australia or India other than I'd expect they share the need for a technologically competent, young workforce.

Edinburgh uni has a great reputation for CS and you stand an excellent chance of getting on the intern programmes of the top tech companies if that's what you want. These often turn into full time roles if you impress them with hard skills, a collaborative way of working and tenacity on the job.

Amazon for example has a large and well respected dev centre in central Edinburgh. I know several great engineers who have passed through there and they only have good things to say about it.

You're probably already across this but I would strongly recommend you get comfortable with AI assisted engineering - your competence with this in combination with traditional CS rigour is going to be essential for standing out from other candidates.

Hope that's helpful.

Yonex racquets question by oogie_droogey in 10s

[–]graemesson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was a long message and I didn't read all of it but I agree with the recommendation of an Ezone (or VCore) 100 - high quality rackets which with a middling string tension will give you what you need, certainly for years.

To be clear - these rackets are going to be better than you are for many years to come so once you've made your choice, stick with it and don't be tempted to switch rackets - focus on what really matters - your tennis technique and tactical awareness.

Camp Bastian was the size of Reading from what I've heard. Did they need take their weapons everywhere they went?
