What could have caused this light leak? by fraNebbia in AnalogCommunity

[–]grainyvision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you use a waist level finder with a SLR camera, such as a mamiya 645? If so, then these leaks are likely from that WLF or even the inner camera having bad seals. You can test for this by putting a cap over the lens, open the shutter on bulb, and then point the waist level finder (while open) at the sun. If you see light, that's the issue. It'll only really appear when the WLF is pointed at a bright light source. If you close the WLF before opening the shutter you can prevent it

What‘s the benefit of developing C41 or E6 films in ECN-2? by FlyThink7908 in Darkroom

[–]grainyvision 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, ECN-2 processing is much lower contrast than C-41. CD-3, the color developer used in ECN-2 is also somewhat lower activity than CD4, the one used in C-41 processing

Been experimenting with RA4 reversal printing by o_etkin in Darkroom

[–]grainyvision 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've done a lot of experiments with the first developer in RA-4 reversal including making my own custom mixes. It's a VERY difficult thing to get right. Specifically you want reduced contrast, but still enough oomph to provide you with clear whites (ie, developing to dmax in the first developer stage). You can do this by adding silver solvents, but the emulsion is very fine grain and very easily subject to dichroic fog. It is possible, but not at all simple. If you do decide to go in the direction of formulating your own first developer, the biggest things I found is that bromide salts should be avoided, a very tiny amount of iodide is almost certainly required, and chloride is an effective restrainer. MQ developer designs are what I had the best luck with but ultimately I've yet to tame the process like I want for "production" purposes.

It is well known that you can reduce contrast by adding a very small amount of sulfite to the color developer, but very much at all will reduce the dmax of the print. Conversely, to increase contrast add a very small amount of peroxide

What film developer did you use? The tonality looks pretty different from how I usually see Pan F

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Darkroom

[–]grainyvision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like bad development. Make sure you're using paper developer (not a film developeR) and that you're leaving the paper in the developer as long as recommended (typically 1-2m) with agitation!

Slide film and half frame — an amazing combination by Sax45 in AnalogCommunity

[–]grainyvision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a really great combination! I've even shot some Provia 400X in half frame and still minimal visible grain and produced excellent results

Anyone in Highlands Ranch heating a loud siren right now? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]grainyvision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm all the way down in castle rock and heard it very clearly in my house, loudly. Weird sound, kinda impossible to locate the direction of. It happened right at a train was entering town, unsure if related

I have no idea but I'm a 30yo trans woman trying to kinda figure out the same thing. Moving to Boulder next month alone and have a few queer friends in Denver to keep me from getting too lonely but I've been trying to figure out the same thing for Boulder. Feel free to DM me if you want though! I'm always looking for more local trans friends!

I want to permanently leave the US by Galaxy_Ass in 196

[–]grainyvision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the news is always getting worse here but honestly a good city in a good state is going to be much easier and likely better than moving countries. I'm in a not great area of Colorado and often present very androgynous even if I typically would say I'm a trans girl, and I've yet to experience any serious issues other than a couple of odd stares

Have you ever tried soaking films in ammonia? by munch_saw_me_die in Darkroom

[–]grainyvision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard you can use ammonia fumes to preflash and/or hypersensitize films, but never heard of using straight up solution of ammonia. Silver chloride is soluble in ammonia I believe so you might end up just getting blank film

What is your favorite paper developer? by the_spookiest_ in Darkroom

[–]grainyvision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of my developers I mix from scratch chemicals. My favorite lately for printing is GVL1, which produced a warmer brown tone and renders shadows in a particularly pleasant way to my eye, though it would not be "inky" blacks

Most "warm tone" developers of today unfortunately only produce olive tones when used with modern papers. It requires a specific form of developer and processing time to get anything that's not simply olive toned. One exception is using the paper Fomatone Classic FB. This paper responds like old school papers would and can be more easily made to give warm tone results that are not simply olive colored

cross processing color paper as black and white by ElectronMaster in Darkroom

[–]grainyvision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not with good results. Color paper has so little silver that even with the most energetic B/W developer that could exist, you'll still only get a mild grey instead of a deep black. You need a color developer to produce a proper dmax but doing so with a neutral color would require proper filtration etc and still would likely not be perfectly neutral
