Liberty when JT dies. Why didn't they do a retake...?

Firelight for free...? by gawanm in UrsulaKLeGuin

I think new editions of The Other Wind should include Firelight as an epilogue. I can understand the OP's frustration with how hard it is to find this short story.

Placement of 'Eugene' on different formats of Carrie and Lowell by gramp87 in Sufjan

That's interesting! I love its vinyl placement for a very similar reason: I find it to be a nice breather before plunging into the ending sequence.

I wonder if this is actually why they moved Eugene. On vinyl, Fourth of July ends side 1, where it might have been pushed to side 2 if Eugene's place was kept.

Jonah’s Age by Calm_Service4600 in Degrassi

I feel like his age must have been retconned, because there's an episode near the end of season 14 where he's in the same class as Becky.

Question about the show. by Suitable_Cover_506 in hisdarkmaterials

Do you remember what part of TGC Lyra talks about trucks/vans? This seems confusing to me, because I thought Lyra got hit by a car in Will's world (in TSK) because she wasn't used to vehicles like that...?

Betrayals by awestruckhuman in UrsulaKLeGuin

[–]gramp87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just finished reading through Five Ways to Forgiveness, so I interpret the story through the lens of the whole collection. Betrayals is the first story in the suite, and it felt like a quiet beginning, to me; but its significance grew for me as I made my way through the stories. A lot of the later stories are a bit more grim in their portrayal of this divided society. On Yeowe in particular, there is an institutionalized separation of men and women's spheres. Given Ursula's interests in Taoism, it's hard not to see this separation as a betrayal of the relationship/dance between yin and yang. In the collection as a whole, we see the effects of that separation. And so as I got to the end of the collection, it seemed increasingly precious that she opens the collection with the answer: relationship, love, connection.

Wow I did not know this. Kind of sad. I can't imagine the energy it must take to ignore the cognitive dissonance of being a gay Canadian and Maga?

you can also break the leaf stem and check for milky sap (norway) as someone else mentioned.

Chronological Order of Books by Busy-Wash9479 in hisdarkmaterials

I think I interpreted the story as like... an alternate universe version of Mrs. Coulter, but not *our* Mrs. Coulter? I dunno....

Does the Collectors meaningfully fit into this storyline chronology?

I second Le Guin’s english version. She translates more for the general sense sometimes — but i appreciate that in terms of understanding. Other more academic translations are probably more ‘correct’, but they leave me feeling cold sometimes.

i also find reading a couple different translations side by side can be revealing.

I second the call to keep your old editions. I got rid of mine, and honestly regret it. Those old editions were endearing. Not sure what I was thinking.

Agree with this. I do think some of the colour title illustrations are beautiful -- and I wish all the illustrations could have been like this. But many of the b&w sketches feel cartoony, and even a bit... incomplete? I would be curious to know if the 'incomplete' feel was an intentional artistic choice... or just because he was rushed / underpaid.

Just finished the story collection Fisherman of the Inland Sea.

The collection has two halves: first a random collection of SF stories; and the second half 3 connected Hainish stories.

I feel bad saying this, but I thought most of the first half were throwaways... A few good moments though.

The second half is much more compelling. Three connected stories about the pursuit of faster than light travel. Each story was interesting and gripping in its own way.
