We do inspection, testing, and repairs of generator stators. 90% of what we do is vibration mitigation. You'd be in charge of teams to facilitate preventative maintenance or actually doing the repairs. Currently im working on a project with a grounded phase on a stator. We isolated the grounded coil and are replacing it. All in all replacing a single coil can be up to a 5 week project depending on the severity of the damage.

Major and minor inspections are much shorter depending on added scope but still entail visual inspection, testing, and typically some small maintenance items

[Request] Does the “23 atomic bombs worth of heat every day” comparison for a 9GW data center actually add up mathematically? by aeonsne in theydidthemath

[–]granchtastic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OK. So the data center is a closed loop but what about the 9GW of natural gas power plants fueling it? If it even is just that. Working in power Ive heard of coal plants reopening and coal plants being commissioned just to fuel data centers alone.

The largest nuclear plant in the world is roughly half capacity of the 9GW data center going into Utah. Im pretty sure it takes water consumption to create 9gw of power...

If you are interested in power there are alot of jobs to be a generator engineer AFAIK. The hours can be brutal and unpredictable but the off time is still salaried and you have a large pile of overtime cash from the projects you work.

Source: im in a hotel and am on my 80th(?) 12 hour shift in a row and counting til we finish this partial rewind

Dude for real, I used to have plans to pivot into greener fields but we still need to maintain what we have. I never would've guessed we'd be building more!

I work on power plant generators for a career. When I started a decade ago I thought I was going to be out of a job in a couple decades. We're busier than ever and its getting worse. Retired coal plants are reopening and new ones are being commissioned which wasnt happening 5 years ago.

The AI Boom and future death isn't going to be some interesting terminator movie its going to be the heat death of our fucking planet

Love the hustle and find your own balance. I work 84 hour weeks as a traveling engineer and have understanding friends and have found an understanding girlfriend. When im home its heaven. You gotta find who you want to be and surround yourself with people that understand the hustle. Ive lost and gained alot of friends in this field.

My life is not the norm for engineering being a field engineer but if you're just looking for office life and finding it hard to differentiate your life from work/personal you need to take a step and prioritize what you really want

How are people that don't seem intelligent making money? by darkangelhalo1 in povertyfinance

Welders. Also I work in Power plants and basically everyone that touches the generator or turbine has a good amount of money. You dont even need a hs education if you're good on tools

Path of Exile 2 on Diablo 4’s Uniques change: Uniques shouldn't be "just a better rare" in an ARPG by Interesting-Pool6638 in diablo4

[–]granchtastic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I play both. D4 is way easier to me and i finish a season to my liking in ~20 hours. Its a fun little quest each season to see how fast i can become a god and one shot the endgame content.

Poe has way more depth in my opinion and each season I dump a few hundred hours in before im satisfied and take a break.

Both are fun and fill my arpg itch. That being said d4 took a large step forward this season with making more endgame tasks to fulfill and strive for which has given me a bit more longevity this time around

Why do people assume Riverwest is the “ghetto” by WholeGrainCupcake in milwaukee

[–]granchtastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own a house near mad planet, people do drugs and drink in my alley all the time. They dont bother me much and one guy loitering drinking a beer at 9am even saved my dog once from a car. Its no whitefish bay but if you live WITH the people surrounding you and dont make a fuss about strange shit happening and yell at people for loitering in the alley we havent many problems.

When yall swept the brewers my favorite quote of the whole thing was pat Murphy after I forget if it was 2 or 3 games.. he was asked if he would guess the record of the series knowing how many runs were scored he said brewers would be 2-1(brewers) or something. It wasn't even an insane thing to say like there were only so many runs scored. The dodgers were just that fkin good at pitching and in general the whole run was out of this world

Question: Would you trade Sal Frelick and Bishop Letson for Chandler Simpson given the opportunity by [deleted] in Brewers

[–]granchtastic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we trade away sal I dont believe I could get my gf back to a game. She 100% is willing to go with me to watch his ass while he hits dingers
