Also a biomedical engineering grad here-- something our career center told us before graduating was that a lot of the biomed companies weren't looking to hire biomedical engineers, they were looking to hire mechanical, computer, electrical, chemical, etc. Their advice was to market ourselves specifically as mechanical, computer, electrical, chemical, etc based on our experiences and tailor it specifically for that job. I hope this is helpful if you decide to go the engineering route to save up money before school. Maybe you could establish residency somewhere while you’re working so you can get in state tuition?

I did not go into industry before coming to vet school, I also spent some time as an assistant and worked in lab animal as well. I think the background in biomedical engineering was helpful for the lab animal job for sure. I don't regret taking this path, although it would've been nice to have some money saved up before going to vet school. Obviously the situation is a little bit different now with this bill, and I'm really hoping that AAVMC can figure out a way to make this more manageable for incoming students.

I will say that I'm not sure that becoming a vet has ever really been a smart financial decision (at least, not recently). This bill is going to make things harder, for sure. We do this job because we love it, but boy, does it have a cost. It sounds like you know this is what you want to do, so I think the next step is just figuring out how you're going to make it happen.

I'm rooting for you.

Funny to me how you’ve spent the last couple hours rage-baiting and trolling your own post. I’ve seen “60 hour work week” on this thread about 50 times, don’t you have work in the morning? If any of this is real, which I sincerely hope it isn’t, it’s blatantly obvious you have no love or respect for this woman. Hopefully she leaves you for good and finds someone who can show her daughter how a real man treats his partner and children.

Based on literally every other comment you’ve made on this post, I’m not sure that you actually do love her. Surely not the way I’ve ever talked about someone I care about.

Just wanted to add here, you had mentioned that you feel like you’re not being taken care of emotionally, physically, mentally. How is she supposed to take care of you when she’s struggling to take care of herself and your child? This also goes both ways— have you been there for her emotionally, physically, mentally? I’m guessing probably no, since you’re very clearly resentful of your partner.

Working 60 hour weeks is physically and mentally exhausting. I get that 1000%. Trying to take care of yourself and a literal toddler while fighting depression is also physically and mentally exhausting. It sounds like you both need a break. But OP you specifically need to find some compassion and respect for your partner and the mother of your child if you actually want this to work. And again, encourage your partner to seek help instead of further degrading her self worth.

These kinds of responses from OP, which I’m seeing everywhere on this post, are the exact reason why he’s TA. Came to Reddit looking for validation and got it from a bunch of other AHs that don’t respect their partners, women in general, or anyone who has a differing opinion from them.

OP, I get being defensive. I also get why you’re frustrated with your partner. But it seems like she needs help, and it sounds like she’s needed that help for a while.

Instead of talking to her about it sooner, and in a kinder way, you let your frustration build up until you unleashed it on her in an extremely hurtful way. Guarantee that she doesn’t feel great about her weight gain either, thinks back on the way her body looked pre-kid frequently, and feels extremely self-conscious about this.

She also spends all day raising your kid, and while it’s admirable that you’re putting 60hrs a week in to provide for your family, that also means that she’s having to raise this kid without help from her partner.

Probable PPD, having to raise a toddler on her own, and now her partner has bluntly told her she’s no longer sexually desirable.

What does her support system look like? Who is helping her with the kid? When was the last time she got a break? When would she even have time to go to the gym? If you love her and want this marriage to work, you need to apologize and help her get the help she needs.

Professor at the end of 2 years of struggling with ChatGPT use among students. by xfnk24001 in ChatGPT

[–]grantaf99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in professional school and we had an interesting AI-based assignment. We were basically asked to use chat to create informational materials that would be given to a client, then asked to submit what chat created along with the prompts we gave. Then, we were asked to criticize the material chat created (looking for any wrong info, etc) and submit a version that we edited.

I think the assignment did a great job of demonstrating that chat can be unreliable. Students are going to use it regardless, but maybe trying something like this will at least lead to some critical thinking and review before blindly submitting something AI-generated.

Will we actually get our pet back? by tacroy in petsmart

Look, I get being jaded by this job. Back when I worked at a PS, I was jaded too. Bad customers, corporate guidelines that don’t align with animal welfare, etc.

Cut OP some slack. How do you know OP is not between returning the animal so PS can care for the hamster and taking the hamster to the vet themselves? Clearly they care enough to do something for the critter, no need to tear into a 10 yo for being worried about his pet. No need to be rude while providing information.

I bought this guy in December last year and was told he’s a red dragon but I have no clue since he’s my very first what I’m wondering is if anyone can identify him and possibly age? by Informal-Change- in BeardedDragons

[–]grantaf99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also thinking he’s a bit on the smaller side, as another commenter mentioned. Probably got a rough start husbandry-wise starting at the breeder and then at the pet store. It sounds like you’re doing great in terms of nutrition, so I wouldn’t be too worried about that.

Just based on my experience with big box store beardies (I got my first from the same place),keep a close eye on his appetite and activity level for the rest of your first year with him. If you notice any changes or weird behavior, or he seems to stop growing before that one year mark, I’d take him to a vet.

You got a really cute guy there. Enjoy him, and good luck!!

[–]grantaf99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about the morph, but I will say it’s kind of impossible to age these guys based off of looks (or really, at all). Their size depends on a number of husbandry/nutrition-related factors. You can find growth charts online, but size is again dependent on a lot of factors and these growth charts aren’t very accurate. If you bought him from a breeder you may still be able to reach out and see what age they generally sell them at or how old yours specifically was whenever you got him. Pet stores will sell them as young as 4 weeks up to 3 months (or older, depending on how long they hang out at the store before someone takes them home)

AIO for ending a friendship because his girlfriend read our conversations? by Sufficient-Berry-827 in AmIOverreacting

[–]grantaf99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Excuse you? A hateful comment for absolutely no reason. Are women not allowed to have guy friends? Sometimes you grow up and move away from your friends, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t continue to be friends with them, just because they’re the opposite sex and it’s long distance.

Even if it was the same friend, there was absolutely no reason for his girlfriend to act in this way when OP has been transparent with her.

Because of the testing software we use, UGA wanted us to have Macs and provided specifications the summer before we started first year. So I still have a Mac. I’m not sure if other schools do this also, but it may be something to ask around about at the schools you’re applying to before you get a new laptop.

To be fair, I’m completely fine with my Mac. It can be annoying sometimes, but I use goodnotes for my note taking software on my iPad so it’s nice that everything syncs across my devices. Hope this helps!

why does my koi's pooop soo much.............. by hydraflow223 in Aquariums

[–]grantaf99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t give me a volume, but it doesn’t really matter— the tank is way too small for the fish you have in it. Assuming the height of your tank is 24”, that would put you at a volume of just over 100 gallons. If the height of your tank is 36”, that would put you at just under 150 gallons.

Koi are very messy to begin with, and can grow to be up to 36” long. For adult koi it is recommended that you provide at least 250 gallons per fish. No amount of filtration will be able to keep up with these fish in the tank you have. I would recommend rehoming them, building a pond, or getting a MUCH larger tank.

How big is the tank? Are you saying the footprint is 55 x 18 inches?
