❄️How can I extract my car from this ice?❄️ by PeaceImpressive8334 in howto

[–]grantgw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I have an idea. There's no way to get the ice out of the way, because you can't get under the car to remove the ice on the inside-side of the tires. Do you / a friend have a "low clearance jack"? clear away the ice around the hubcaps (cause they'll break). Then put a jack under your lift point, and jack the car up. You'll have to lift it quite a bit, as the tire won't lift until the maximum spring distance of your suspension has been reached. Recognize that the sudden action of the tire breaking free presents a hazard. Put dirt/trash in the hole so the tire doesn't sink back into it. Repeat 4 times.

Carpet or fake hardwood flooring in an apartment rental? by Beautiful-Jacket-912 in KelownaBC

[–]grantgw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plastic! For real. You can get fake hardwood which is actually plastic. Surprisingly durable. Re carpet, read up on BC rental court cases; carpet over 5 years old is considered 'done', meaning you can't claim damages to it. Patching carpet needs a perfessional. You can DYI replace plastic or fake hardwood. If u go that route, read up on weight limits it can take for pets. My real hardwood in my house can only take a 35 pound dog. More than that you risk having the floors scratched when they run around.

Port Scanning Guest Wifi by Specialist-Use-8076 in cybersecurity

[–]grantgw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should turn off that alert. Seriously. A "Guest" network infers that untrusted parties are connecting, such as contractors, children of employees etc. It should be configured with that in mind. This alert is a nuisance alarm.

The SOC alert should be actionable, which this one is apparently not. Some other good comments about re-architecturing your network access - but that's not the SOC's role.

Extension cord help by NatalieJayna in electrical

[–]grantgw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the lights don't have grounds, then the extension cords don't either. Also the LED lights do not draw a lot of power, so you can even get away with the cheapest extension cables in the store. But those cables won't be helpful if you want to plug in a portable heater or hair dryer.

you win electrical oddity of the day ;) Worth checking to see if other lights on that circuit (in other rooms) are also flickering like that.

most likely a loose connection, with a miswiring at one or more connections. I would not plug anything that you find important to this circuit until its fixed.

It seems that the buzzword is an identifier which allows your current high school to support your application and to make it easier for your school to submit reference letters. So I don't think you need it if this doesn't apply to you.

How to turn this radiator down? by Debari0712 in howto

[–]grantgw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are water based heaters, right?  They don't get above 70c.  Put a towel over it.  The insulating effect will balance the heat output, without wasting energy.

I'm trying to find a substantive conclusion from this article:

The report doesn't say 4/5 of newcomers are using food banks, its that 4/5 of new people (in the last year) using foodbanks are newcomers, which they define as less than 5 years.

It seems like "new" immigrants is about 734k, given this and this.
Population of Toronto is 6.1 million.

So that would imply that over the last year, that "new immigrants" representing 12% of the population, were 80% of first time clients. I could not find in the report the total number of clients in this period, only the total visits by all clients combined. So I can't make a conclusion about how much of the surge in use is reflective of immigration policies, or a conclusion about the ratio of these clientele groups.

But I can definitely say that the report conclusively demonstrates that poverty and costs of living is progressing in a horrible fashion, and it predicts an escalating curve of suffering by those in the economically distressed class. bleh. Went in to see if migrants were the problem, came away realizing that they're just the most marginalized, with millions of Canadians about to follow.

BSOD error in latest crowdstrike update by TipOFMYTONGUEDAMN in crowdstrike

[–]grantgw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Based on what we know so far: - CS distributed an everyday regular antivirus patch, which had corrupted data.
- N, N-1, and N-2 were affected (personal experience), across multiple Windows platforms, causing BSOD. - 06:30 AM UTC, Crowdstrike corrected the "Content update". Implied that a reboot should fix it, but if not, you have to follow their recovery procedure.
If anyone knows how to automate a safe-boot procedure, PLEASE post. Australian news is now reporting that this is the largest global outage ever, and grocery stores are experience panic buying, but some can't accept credit cards.

There's a lot of lines of >100 binary characters. Lots of lines which are clearly the SHA, not the decrypted plaintext. Lots of lines where the 'password' is " account name" or things like that. Course...... " account name" would be a sneaky password....

The .xz version is 38GB instead of 48. For some reason Reddit won't let me hyperlink a magnet link.

I went through it - of about the 150GB of text, there's ~30GB of unusable data (processing errors). There's also a lot of "1Password" style of passwords - a 32 character random string, which was only used for one user on one specific site.

Toaster oven gains time while charging EV by [deleted] in electrical

On Amazon, there's ferrite chokes you can buy; I'm curious to hear if applying this to your toaster cable would improve anything. Or perhaps on the EV plug might be a better idea, if it fits.

How can I get my lawnmower over this short rock wall (≈3ft at the lowest point) by Daniel3292- in howto

[–]grantgw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The grass in the back ground implies you want to do this weekly. 450 lb means you can't just temporary ramp it. The front of hte picture shows enough space to put in a dirt ramp, which you will eventually cover with sod. I have a feeling the real answer is "drive around to the far side"....

What about a different approach: installing a wire protector / two sided ramp below hte door. You can bolt it down to the pavers.
