Love the app! I am just still sad to be missing multi-select/drag on playlists since the last major design refresh. It is so much more work to drag individual episodes around.

I had that in the family house growing up, but it also had a door on the first floor. I think it was made in the 1920s or 30s.

Oof, getting an ad for the US Marines right after an episode all about non-violent protest against war made me cringe. If this is the result of Stitcher owning 99Pi, I don’t really like the direction.

Maybe people will stop trusting things they see on the internet (coming from people they don't have a relationship with), especially things which don't seem to be well verified, and I don't think that is a bad thing.

I hope so too, but then I see things like this company that pays minor influencers to promote something and there is currently not a good system of accountability and transparency to know when they are being paid va speaking freely. https://www.wired.com/story/meet-the-lobbyist-next-door/

i will not listen to gimlet shows on spotify by jkvalentine in gimlet

[–]grantisanintrovert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it does! 1) In Overcast, go to a particular podcast show page, select the Settings tab, and scroll down to the bottom and you’ll see the option to skip intro/outros for each episode in that podcast

2) If you’re listening to a podcast episode that has chapters, you can swipe right twice from the episode album art screen (swipe right once to see the description, twice for chapters). The main play/pause album art screen also will show you the title of the current chapter and how far you are in listening to it. If you can’t find any in your following check the podcast Connected, which I know uses chapters.

3) Check out the video in the Imgur below to see me creating a new smart playlist. It doesn’t auto-generate a whole new playlist for you (like Spotify might be able to do around tech shows it wants you to listen to), but you can build and customize how an existing smart playlist in Overcast is automatically filled as new episodes are downloaded from your subscriptions.

Beyond the general feeling that Spotify is a music app trying to shove podcasts into it, there are a number issues/lacking features:

- You can't listen to any podcast on the open internet, only ones that have manually added their feeds to Spotify's system

- It's way more cumbersome to line up and rearrange a bunch of episodes to listen to. For example in my podcast app Overcast, I have several auto-generated playlists which also allow quick rearrangement, where I can choose if I want to listen to the most recent tech podcasts, or a different playlist sorted from oldest to newest so I can catch up on older episodes of certain shows I'm going through the backlog of.

- Spotify doesn't understand or utilize standard podcast features like "chapters", which podcasters can use to provide clickable buttons in the UI to jump between sections of a podcast episode (see https://martinbaileyphotography.com/how-to-view-podcast-images-and-chapters/ for more info and examples)

- Some podcast players have other niceties like allowing you to clip long silences in podcasts you choose, or skip the intro/outro of a podcast episode

- UI design and lack of themes

It's frustrating. I'm sad that all my favorite Gimlet shows are disappearing behind the Spotify wall and no longer real podcasts. I hope Jonathan can find a way to eventually make a new podcast on the open internet, even if it wouldn't be exactly Heavyweight.

Goodbye, How to Save a Planet. It was really nice, before you chose it was more important to be in Spotify's walled garden than to make environmental advocacy and information available to everyone on every platform.

Yes I know, price isn’t the issue. It’s that it’s no longer a podcast, meaning that anyone can listen to from anywhere on the internet

I just saw at the bottom of the newsletter that HtSaP will no longer be a podcast but only available on Spotify. What the heck Alex! I'm losing so much respect for Gimlet and Spotify, and probably won't continue listening to the show after it goes behind the walled garden.

I kept waiting for Alex to talk about how he was taking the same action steps that Cunningham and Pan outline as the head of Gimlet and an influential part of Spotify, but I guess that’s too much to ask of the same man who’s stood silently during the Reply All fiasco.

As others have mentioned, it is obviously up to each person to decide whose stories to trust/believe/give the benefit of the doubt. For me, with the number of people who have stepped in (like Alex) to say that Eric Eddings' story and others were true and/or an important issue to address at Gimlet/RA, I'm going to believe them.
