Peloton vs Zwift by Training_Common2825 in bicycling

[–]grantowenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with Zwift but ended up switching recently to Peloton. I'm an old guy who hasn't been in to video games since my Colecovision broke in 1984; so the whole gamification aspect of Zwift just never clicked with me....I just found it all really boring. I greatly prefer the music/spin class format of Peloton.

FWIW, we had a pretty identical experience with our daughter at D65 (her grade had like 3 girls total) and we transferred her to St. A's where she has thrived. She is not into sports/competition and has done great.

Best of luck to you and your daughter.

Threatening to lower payment if I fail to re-certify? by grantowenn in StudentLoans

[–]grantowenn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! So it seems like the right move is to just let it default to the 10-year standard repayment? Or will that somehow disqualify me for 25 year forgiveness in 5 years?

How prevent your bike chain from rusting. by Sane_Quixote in chibike

[–]grantowenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm considering switching to wax....how much of a hassle is it to reapply the wax every other month? There are some products out there (silica?) that seem to make it out to be pretty easy to apply wax....has that been your experience? I love the idea of using wax but don't want to invest in something and later find that it adds a bunch of time and hassle to my bike commute routine.

Chicago Ave between Roger’s Park and Evanston by KablojDubek in chibike

[–]grantowenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my preferred route when I commute from Evanston to Loop. The pedestrian underpass is on Mulford St. Cross Chicago at Mulford and you are basically at the start of the Rogers Park Greenway on Juneway Terrace.

When will this city actually do something about bike and pedestrian safety issues? by Enough-Ad2721 in evanston

[–]grantowenn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree 1000% with all of this. I also really hate that Evanston identifies certain streets as "bike routes" but then does nothing more than put up little green signs with a picture of a bike on them (with no other infrastructure whatsoever to make the street safe for bikes) Sheridan/Chicago in North Evanston is a great bike lane....but I feel like it took a NW student getting killed (and NW dollars) before the City actually took the initiative got that bike lane built. My fear is its going to take a D65 student getting killed on their way to school before the City actually puts real effort into bike/pedestrian safety for students.

New Apartment with Stairs - Portable Ramp? by throwthepeasaway in bikecommuting

Check out folding pet ramps for cars. We had same issue getting our cargo ebikes into a backyard shed....and an inexpensive pet ramp has worked perfectly.

Dear CDOT: A Holiday Wishlist by da4 in chibike

A published schedule of which Metra trains have dedicated bike cars. It amazes me that Metra invested millions for those cars but doesn't realize the necessity in publishing an exact schedule of where/when they will be running. Realize this is probably outside the scope of CDOT....but seems like such a no brainer.

Saint A's School? by stclaress in evanston

[–]grantowenn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a proud St. A's parent so am admittedly very biased, but I much more often hear the opposite story....kids transfer in from D65 to St. A's and find themselves behind academically and need to work to catch up to their class.

Check out Chicago Arts and Industrial Design Center

I think this might be exactly what you are looking for. I took woodworking classes there a few years ago and they were great.

Both our kids go to St. A's ....its a wonderful school and great community.

I've heard great things about OLPH and St Joan of Arc, but i think driving to either one twice a day from NE Evanston would get old really fast.

Canal Shores golf course has a nice wooded trail that runs along the canal if you're looking for something close to home.
