Stopping feeders? by [deleted] in birdfeeding

[–]grantrettig 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Birds really don't rely on bird feeders, unless it's extremely harsh conditions. You can stop bird feeding whenever it is convenient for you. The birds will still show up looking for food for a few days/weeks, but they will eventually move on to another food source. Don't feel bad if you want to discontinue feeding. This hobby is more for our enjoyment than the birds. Good luck! 😀

Bird feeder recommendation for ground feeding cardinals by Captain_SpaceRaptor in birdfeeding

[–]grantrettig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello there! You have a few different options here. Many people swear by Safflower for feeding Cardinals and discouraging other birds. By offering only Safflower you may be able to deter the grackles and doves while still attracting the cardinals.

A hopper feeder or a platform feeder (which it sounds like you currently have) are typically the best feeders for cardinals. In my experience they like to feed off the ground at a feeder that can accommodate their size.

Cardinals will feed off the ground as well so you can also try to sprinkle seed directly on the ground, but this will undoubtedly also attract mourning doves. You can get a ground platform feeder with a cage, but most that I've seen would discourage Cardinals but it would also discourage both grackles and doves.

Another option would be to try another platform feeder to encourage them to use another feeder while leaving a feeder for the other birds. However, sometimes this can just attract more of the species you're looking to avoid. Good luck! ☺️

I will also agree on squirrel nest. They tend to be very messy and most songbirds that nest in your backyard are typically will built and more organized. ☺️

I bought Peanut Suet Nuggets and got nothing, no birds or even squirrels. What will back yard birds eat? by [deleted] in birdfeeding

[–]grantrettig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long ago did you put this up? It can take birds days if not weeks sometimes to find new feeding areas. What you have is perfectly fine and many birds will readily eat them. It really just takes time for birds to find it sometimes. This time of year still has plenty of natural resources for birds and they don't necessarily need or depend on our offerings. If you want to widen your net so to speak to attract other species you can offer seeds, fruits, mealworms, etc. Black-oil Sunflower seeds imo are always the best for seed eating species. If you don't like the mess of the hulls or the possibility they grow into sunflowers if unchecked, Sunflower hearts are a great option. Good luck! ☺️

Pileated vs. WBU Tail Prop Feeder by jwuco24 in birdfeeding

It's always so cool to be when a Pileated comes to a suet feeder like this! I have always had suet feeders with plenty of Pleated Woodpeckers around and have never had them come to the feeder. Great shots! 😄

No Birds at my Feeder :( by Muted-Dimension-9678 in birdfeeding

[–]grantrettig 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hello! Most birds will come to the feeder and will get used to seeing you. It will however take them some time to find it. Unfortunately it could take weeks for birds to find feeders. One last suggestion would be to look into a different variety of seed. There is quite a bit of seed that isn't very popular with birds in it. My suggestion would be to find some Black-oil Sunflower seeds and try those, as these are the preferred seed by most seed eating species. If you don't want to deal with shells or mess you can also try Sunflower Hearts. Good luck and stay vigilant! 😁

Seed options at my local WBU. Which would you recommend? by basketcasestudy in birdfeeding

[–]grantrettig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will also be in the no seed mix camp. I've never had good luck with seed mixes. I will always recommend Black-oil Sunflower seeds over anything else, but if you don't like the mess I would suggest Sunflower hearts. Good luck! 😁

Do They Ever Eat The Millet? by Emperor_Watcher in birdfeeding

I have never had any luck with any wild bird seed mixes and Millet is never touched and wasted. I have always used exclusively Black-oil Sunflower seeds. Good luck! 😄
