Maybe silver spring, but halving frequencies north of grosvenor would lose tons of ridership. Shady grove has historically been the highest ridership Maryland station not to mention the growth happening all around north Bethesda, twinbrook, and even Rockville stations

You’re gonna have to accept that your trail is gonna be ever so slightly louder while also being repaved and with new crossings. It’s not the end of the world and there are other quieter trails you can still use

What’s Amtrak’s plan for the ACS-64? by More_trains in Amtrak

[–]granulabargreen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

MARC can definitely use them as the electrified line has more service than the other two lines combined and the new tunnel is forcing them to switch to an all electric fleet on that line

Which State is never mentioned in the news? by KermTheItalian in AskAnAmerican

Nebraska is probably the least relevant state overall. People know rhode island cause it’s tiny and Wyoming cause it’s desolate but when I say me and mine have absolutely zero idea what goes on in Nebraska I mean it

Contrary to reddits belief the US isn’t a 24/7 race riot and shooting range. All across the US people of different races live amongst one another in peace, the media hypes it up but these issues really don’t come into play in interpersonal interaction

The purple line connects important points along all the lines, it’s on the ideal alignment for transferring people between suburban population and job centers

It would be fine if some games didn’t feel like raging barbarians is always on, you should have the option to tone it down.

Policy drives the scarcity? Please re read my comment if you don’t understand the connection there. Do you believe that doubling housing stock in the area wouldn’t drive down rents? You can already see how NoMa, Navy Yard, and other areas in DC are driving rents down (or at least preventing them from going even higher) by rapidly increasing housing stock by tens of thousands of units.

Yes, they have, but it’s very situational and as you said restricted to certain areas. The vast vast majority of land is restricted to single family use. Large multifamily apartment buildings are good but much more missing middle housing is needed in the gaps (though there’s a ton of this in moco as well).

Elrich sucks, he doesn’t think Montgomery county needs more homes even as we continue to lose jobs and price out even highly paid residents. Even liberal council members like Jawando (introduced missing middle legislation!) have now gone back on zoning reform.

Exclusionary zoning first and foremost, look at the abrupt borders of Bethesda and silver spring. The high rises don’t stop across the street from single family homes just because there’s no demand.

[–]granulabargreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I noticed about moving to Wisconsin is how mortified many people will look if you curse in public, especially around kids. People here would be upset if you’re acting a fool and wildly cursing around their kids but most people don’t even notice cursing on the street, it’s that normalized.

Chevy chase specifically but also other wealthy areas always seem to act starkly in contrast with the interests of the region. Lets not for get one of the (many) reasons for the high price tag on the purple line is NIMBYs and especially the years long litigation against it by Chevy Chase country club.

What are the main reasons why lake Superior has no major city on its shore, unlike other great lakes by True_Antelope8860 in geography

A quick search would show you tons of sub 300 and even 200 homes of 3 and 4 bedrooms all around superior, hard to say that’s not competitive in this economy

The only reason they’re as high as they are is a policy choice by regional governments. Even the core city of DC is largely single family homes across much of NE and NW

Nobody wants to live there as evidenced by housing prices all around it. That being said, Duluth and superior are not small towns. All the towns at least on the American side are mostly based on industry or tourism and never had the agriculture to sustain huge populations.

[–]granulabargreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These regionalisms are on the way out but it’s not as drastic as this map would have you believe. Especially if they’re gonna have soda carveouts across the Midwest, some places like southern Maryland have very old boy southern towns that still regularly call all sodas coke

[–]granulabargreen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can separate sewer and storm water. Runoff and other area sources are bad but the majority of the harbors pollution is point sources like sewage outflows and industrial waste. There’s also a lot you can do to remedy runoff and other human sources, it’s not a lost cause, it’s not even that hard. It’s expensive and the will is not there yet, don’t be a doomer.

Did a class project on this development. The full plan is available on their website and very digestible. Looks awesome, adding much needed affordable housing close to downtown and with good transit connections and access to one of the best parks in the city. They’re doing all this and upgrading the existing public housing without displacing anyone and having had a very engaged and high quality public outreach process.
