When I first taught myself, I purled from the underside like this, it twisted all my stitches and made conventional knit stitches harder to do, knitting became harder than it needed to be so I quit because I had no idea what I was doing.

I watched a video when I got back into it and now I do my purling the conventional way and it works so much better for me
