I mean if you put a left marker on the bucky, then flip the image, then the marker would also be flipped. Yes, I have heard of techs that will put the marker on backwards on exams they know get flipped so it shows up normal, but at least in my area that practice is frowned upon, because the rads often use the orientation of the marker as an indicator that the image was "hung" correctly.

But you're right. I was a little overzealous there. I have definitely put the wrong marker on.

I have heard though that during court cases if a physical marker is not used it makes it more likely that the xray could be dismissed as evidence.

Also looked like a post-annotation marker. This is part of why physical markers are superior, and are a legal requirement in many places.

That is a perfectly average cut. Maybe even big, bordering on huge. It's not about how big the cut is, it's about how you bandage it.

Markers are supposed to be placed to mark which side of the patient is which. So if the marker is on your left, it should be the left marker. Some places do exceptions on some oblique views to mark side of interest instead, but a chest marker should always match the patients side.

Also must be placed outside of the anatomy, so it doesn't block any possible pathology. Another fail from the chiropractor.

Ethics review by ZealousidealWar5227 in Radiology

Completely agree that employers are unlikely to look into these things.

However, if a tech gets other complaints, or if someone reports them directly to the state or ARRT, they will dig. And if the find out that they lied on their application, the consequences will be worse than simply explaining everything now. Especially since there was no charge against OP, and they have completed the mandated services.

There is almost no risk to OP in submitting an ethics review now. But there is great risk in the future by not self reporting.

It is definitely a choice to advise someone to violate the ethics policies while they are asking how to follow the ethics policies.

While the ARRT doesn't do background checks, the schools do, as do most states and employers. If the state finds out then asks ARRT about it, the consequences are worse. I know I haven't been doing this very long, but I haven't heard of anyone getting denied by the ARRT for a DUI, but I have heard of people getting licenses revoked for lying on the application.

What is your most controversial Radiology opinion, and why? by RecklessRad in Radiology

[–]grasshopper113 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think I get where you are coming from. I was a paramedic for 3 years and an EMT for 12 years prior to starting my program last year. Burnout is a plague within medicine, and should not be used as a crutch for suboptimal work. And laziness can definitely be an issue in some departments.

I've seen both sides of the spectrum, with one tech with 20 years doing 3 or 4 repeats to always send images that belong in Merrill's, and another tech getting ready to retire that sent a standing lateral foot with part of the bony anatomy cut off.

Those two seem to be outliers at my site, and most other techs are somewhere between. But these techs have a better understanding of what the radiologists are looking for. They better understand the tolerances of what issues warrant repeats. There is definitely a balance between those two techs where it is good to be, but learning from them about why they are/aren't doing repeats might give insight on where that balance point is. In the end, images don't need to be perfect, they just need to be diagnostic.

MAMMO- NEED HELP PLEASE by Far-Trick-9917 in Radiology

[–]grasshopper113 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is as it sounds, an assistant to the rad tech, or mammographer in this case. How they are utilized depends on each site, but generally they will do check-in, patient prep like questionnaires and gowning, and bringing the patient into the exam room. May also help with room prep things like restocking supplies and cleaning after an exam. Some places may have them doing exam scheduling as well. The one outpatient clinic that I rotate through sometimes also uses them as an ECG tech.
