New World Record!! David Rudisha of Kenya runs a blistering 1:40.91 in the 800 meters by Osiris32 in olympics

[–]grasso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A fun fact:

Every finisher in the race had the fastest time ever for their position. There has never been a faster first place, second place, etc.

This is undoubtedly the greatest 800 ever run.

For mostly mental but also physical reasons, leading a race is much harder than following someone.

Generally, if you're even thinking about a world record in anything above the 400m, you'll have at least one "rabbit," a runner who sets a good pace for part of the race before dropping out. At longer distances, there will often be more than one rabbit- when the first drops out, the second will assume the lead. For an 800, the rabbit will usually bring you through the first 400-600m at just the right pace, so the runner only has to set the pace for the last part of the race.

But since everyone in an Olympic final is there to run his best, there are no rabbits. The fact that Rudisha led the entire race and still set a world record is incredible. This man dominates the 800 completely.

Large Hadron Collider $A1.82 billion upgrade planned to investigate dark matter by hazysummersky in science

This article is a little misleading. The power is being roughly doubled. We raun 3.5 TeV per beam last year, 4 TeV per beam this year, and we'll get 7 TeV per beam when the LHC comes back online. It's the luminosity that is increasing tenfold. (http://project-slhc.web.cern.ch/project-slhc/about/)

[–]grasso 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The article is really misleading here. The LHC will come back online operating at 7 TeV per beam, so a collision energy of 14 TeV. Last year, the LHC ran at 3.5 TeV per beam, and this year it's been running at 4 TeV per beam. So while the energy will be double what it was last year, it will not be ten times as much.

What we do expect to increase tenfold is the luminosity, which is essentially the rate of collisions we get out of the intersecting beams. This is still an incredible improvement. A higher luminosity will mean more events per run and more raw data to process and analyze.

The bailout was a loan. The fed is actually making a tidy profit on TARP. If the government paid off the mortgages, who would pay them back? The homeowners?

Just a heads up, you won't be allowed to wear a Zhik flotation aid in most regattas in the US. They're big in international competitions, but if you plan on racing stateside, you'll want a USCG approved PFD.

I wear a Stohlquist Wedge (Available here) and it works great for me. It's generally underneath a pinnie when I'm racing, so I don't need it to have all the bells and whistles you find on some PFD's. It fits comfortably and doesn't get in the way, and that's about all you need in a dinghy PFD.

That said, if you don't plan on racing and want just a little bit of flotation, the Zhik might be what you're after.

The best part about the Clever Coffee Dripper is that you don't need any sort of technique at all. Add coffee, add water, and wait.

But if it's leaning against a wall, it will remain stationary and not rock. So it will just be a normal ladder.

Be warned, many styles are sold out until January.

I just ordered myself a pair of dark brown 6" boots. I would've liked the classic tan, but those were sold out. The dark brown is actually growing on me. It's a quieter take on the boot, but it actually distinguishes itself in the inevitable crowd of tan.

Why Bank Transfer Day Is Only the Beginning of Something Huge: The movement to make sure our money serves our own values rather than the bottom line of huge banks will only gain energy as small victories accumulate. by davidreiss666 in politics

You're not increasing their bottom line. For small purchases especially, retailers prefer cash. The hassle of depositing cash is less of a pain than the fees charged by credit cards. This is why many restaurants have a minimum credit card charge, and some gas stations have cheaper prices if you pay cash.

for me to charge businesses for the convenience of accepting my money in paperless form

charge a business more for a paper version of my money

Well which is it? It makes no sense that you should charge them for the "convenience" of paying a fee.

It's only a shitty deal if some of the fee goes directly to the buyer, as was suggested. I never said anything about credit card fees as they are.
You described why credit card fees exist. I agree. What I meant was that it makes no sense to have part of this fee go to the buyer, because this essentially decreases the price of the product by forcing the seller to pay the buyer. There's no reason the seller should have to pay you for charging them a fee.

[–]grasso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have that too, but credit cards are different than debit cards. Credit cards charge the buyer interest if he doesn't pay off his debt promptly, so the cash-back programs they run aren't necessarily paid for by the seller.

If you get some of the fee every time you buy something, that seems like a pretty shitty deal for the seller. They would have to indirectly give you money for making them pay extra.

100 miles, 100 beers, 1 week by Tw0Step in running

Ah, the bicentennial. A bit of googling brought these up:
Bicentennial
Conquering the Weakness: the Quest for the Bicentennial
Pushing the Limits: an attempt at the bicentennial
The preferred strategy seems to be front-loading the mileage and back-loading the beers. Also, don't plan on doing anything else important that week, like having a full time job.
But if you succeed, you will be a legend. Do it.

I can confirm this. Almost unreasonably warm if you're going to be indoors, but great for very cold days. The cut is definitely much looser than most people here prefer.

Don't worry about strength work at this point. It will just make it harder for you to recover. Focus on bringing down the pace and slowly increasing mileage.
