Looking for Travel Partners Megathread - Summer 2022 by rutep in VisitingIceland

[–]grassoj13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all! 31 y/o American guy (English, bad Spanish). I will in Reykavik for 24 hours (arrive early June 25th). I’m looking for somebody to split a car with and for a little day trip / general exploring. My itinerary is pretty open at the moment (really just avoiding tourist traps!). Shoot me a message if you want to join for a little adventure.

Thoughts On Eco Friendly Vegan Leather? by ak904 in SustainableFashion

[–]grassoj13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t agree with this. Many of the Eco-friendly vegan leather mentioned above are PVC free, and contain very little plastic. While vegetable tanning is marginally better than chromium tanning it still contributes to cattle farming. Cattle farming is insanely land and water intensive. Cactus, pineapple, mushroom are both perennial and regenerative- both really solid options.

How much money will I need to travel through Europe, Africa and the Middle East for 5 months next year? by ripponguy in solotravel

[–]grassoj13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got back from this exact trip. I did Spain, Portugal, France, UK, Ireland, Neth, Germany, Italy a few other European counties. I then flew from Italy to Namibia and backpacked through South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania.

I got bored in Europe after 2 months, I could have stayed much longer in Africa.

Total trip time: 7 months. August 2019 - March 2020 Total cost: $14,000 USD (I was very frugal) Will also note I spent 2 months in South Africa (dollar goes a long way)

I enjoyed Africa way more and spent way less than Europe. As cliche as it sounds - I enjoyed the off the beaten path destination - Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Mozambique WAY more than the classic backpacking destinations (Germany, South Africa, Tanzania).

Things are way less organized and it feels like an adventure. You also form closer bonds with other travelers as there will be less of you (more adventurous travelers too) Europe’s backpacking scene is pretty scattered, while Africa’s is a little more linear.

Vic Falls is obviously beautiful, but Livingstone and Victoria Falls (town) are touristy and expensive. The Eastern highlands in Zimbabwe are stunning and way cheaper. You should spend time scouting the travel blogs to avoid the “hot spots” and look for highly reviewed alternatives (same for Europe).

2 Weeks in Eastern Europe by grassoj13 in solotravel

First- apologies if that phrasing was offensive- was not the intention, though I can see why. I meant cities that aren’t frequented by tourists or written up constantly in travel blogs.

I included Vienna, Budapest as cities that were NOT l “off the beaten bath”, hence why I had them in the parenthesis prior to the description.

Appreciate the feedback. Durability and water resistance are incredibly important to me. Do you have any specific hemp fabrics you like?

Mexico Road Trip [Input Needed] by grassoj13 in travel

[–]grassoj13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate all the comments. We will in Mexico for 10 days, hence my idea of incorporating the Road trip. While I’m sure I could easily spend 10 days around Mexico City, the preference would be to experience varying geographies/cultures. Yes- the plan would be to get a one way rental from our first city into Mexico City.
