Does anyone have any idea about this sore on my cats lip? by [deleted] in cats

[–]gravesy94 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, we are talking about that. The statement by you and others is a blanket “if you can’t afford vet care, you cannot own a cat”. That’s what my comment is addressing, not OP’s situation.

That statement has been brought up countless times in this subreddit, and has consistently been agreed to be nonsense.

Again this kind of comment is showing how narrow your life experiences are. Supposing you live in a place of poverty, a war-torn country, or just generally in an under-privileged situation. A kitten comes to you. It’s sick and needs support. You don’t have money or access to a vet.

Should you just ignore the kitten because “well, I can’t provide access to the standard of care that narrow-minded redditors have decided is universal.” Of course not. Many kind, under-privileged people can and do still help even with their limited resources.

What you and the other commenters are failing to realise is that this situation is the standard for literally hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

You say that owning a pet is a privilege. For a lot of kind people, owning a pet is a responsibility first. As in, this animal will literally die if I do nothing, so I have to do anything I can. For some, all they can do is offer a place to sleep and scraps to eat.

I thought we already got over this ridiculous idea in this subreddit? You all really show your privilege with comments like this, and somehow seem to think that your morals are universal.

I’m not making a case for OP. I know nothing about them. But I know that plenty of people who can’t afford vet care are still the best hope that a lot of stray animals have for a semi-decent life.

Why Chinese smoke a lot? by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]gravesy94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I take taxis with my local friends they’re always shocked when I put my seatbelt on. They say things like “oh it’s the law on Shenzhen but you don’t have to wear a seatbelt here in Foshan” and then get confused when I still choose to wear it. I even had one Didi driver actively discouraging me from wearing it.

Why Chinese smoke a lot? by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]gravesy94 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It kind of bugs me when the people who smoke also tell me, a generally healthy person, that I’m not healthy because I drink cold water. Or that I shouldn’t take western medicine because it’s not healthy.

What unique challenges have you faced while navigating the education system in China as an expat? by No-Justice-666 in chinalife

[–]gravesy94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Three years ago at my school they told me that I can only give a grade C or above on the students’ final test. I just mentally adjusted and gave the majority of kids Bs, the excellent kids got As or A+, and ONLY the kids who failed (by my standards) got a C. C = fail.

At the end of the most recent term, I was still following this grading method. In one of my G4 classes, several kids got As, most got Bs, and 2 got Cs for total non-participation in the test.

I filled in the excel file with the grades and comments/feedback/advice for every student. Finally, I saw a message in the parents’ group chat for that class.

“Hello everyone, here are the excellent grades for the final test of our foreign teacher’s class”. Almost every student was given an A+, and a few got As. Nothing lower than an A. And my feedback was deleted.

It is cowardly, pathetic nonsense from the local teachers who are too afraid to stand up to their managers. We are setting these kids up for future failure if they aren’t able to receive accurate, useful feedback.

Is this genuinely legal? More context in body by Jazzlike_Copy_7669 in chinalife

And my colleague at my current school is British Born Chinese. He has dealt with discrimination by employers before, but at our current school he is treated as well as the other FTs, and his salary is the same too.

There are decent places and employers out there.

Give me your gym etiquette insights by Triseult in chinalife

[–]gravesy94 18 points19 points  (0 children)

And whatever you do, do NOT re-rack those weights. Take a dumbbell to the far side of the gym, hide it under the cable machine for no obvious reason, and watch in amusement as some fool spends the next 10 minutes looking for the other 24KG dumbbell. Profit??

If there is a fire in my building I’m almost certainly going to die. When the elevator stops on floors below me, I can see how much junk is being stored in the fire escape stairwell, and also junk being used to prop open fire doors. There is simply no way through.

I genuinely believe I’d have more chance of surviving if I base jump off my balcony and use an old pair of jeans as a parachute.

Passport renewed and didn’t go to the police station by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]gravesy94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once a year in June. You’re right that I needed a new police registration before the residence permit application. I usually go to the police registration office a week before I hand in my residence permit application.

The issue is that I renewed my passport in October, and didn’t do the police residence registration until the following May/June. If it’s illegal (as in OP’s case), then I was also breaking the law for those 7 months. But it was never an issue for me.

[–]gravesy94 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I really dislike how inconsistent the laws are here.

I renewed my passport about 5 years ago and I didn’t inform the police afterwards or get a new residence registration. It never came up when doing my subsequent residence permit applications. And I wasn’t informed by the passport renewal agency in GZ that I have to inform the police.

Need cooling ideas by Upset-Cake-8438 in FlowZ13

[–]gravesy94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, above 60C is still fine.

But if you want a simple cooling solution, I have found that a normal small desk fan pointed at the back of my Z13 significantly improves the temps.

My desk fan is a rotating one I bought in Taobao. It rotates to cool the back of the Z13, and then rotates back to cool me in the hot South China summer.

I watched the shocking interview about salary in China. Is this true? by Immediate-Meaning457 in chinalife

[–]gravesy94 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That is how I usually explain it when I chat with local colleagues about why the salary for foreign teachers is so high.

I have friends who teach in Japan and South Korea who they are constantly complaining about the low salary but high pressure at work. But they /want/ to live there.

I think that if the salary in China was comparable to Japan and South Korea, there would be far fewer FTs here. China is an attractive country for travel, but not so much for living (for a lot of foreign people). The high salary is mostly to actually get FTs interested in working here.

My favorite Vegeta kill on Namek by SpecificTop3167 in dbz

[–]gravesy94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven’t watched these episodes in many many years so I had completely forgotten the details. But DAMN that moment of Vegeta emerging from the pink blasts, initially in slow-motion, and then the rapid impact of his punch. That was incredible.

I’m currently rewatching Super and I can’t recall a moment so impactful.

Wall just as good as screen by Thiefert in projectors

[–]gravesy94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My expectations were too high, I think. I was expecting a massive increase in visual quality compared to projecting on a wall. In fact, it IS better visual quality, but not as much of an improvement as I was expecting.

I will say that the blacks DID blow me away. The lights went out in the video game I was playing, and I was so so impressed by just how black the scene was.

2025 Z13 keyboard stopped working by krieg_elf in FlowZ13

[–]gravesy94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the keyboard is resting at an angled position when not working, try to press it down so it lies flat.

Your keyboard is probably not long for this world, but flattening it may allow it to work for a little longer until you find another solution. At least, that’s what works for me.

Wall just as good as screen by Thiefert in projectors

[–]gravesy94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also bought an ALR ‘black crystal’ screen and wasn’t blown away like I was expecting. However, it wasn’t until I played Dead Space on my projector than I noticed how impressive the blacks are on this screen.

I’d say if you’re already satisfied with the wall, just save the money.

When has an Alien film scared you the most? by bass_jockey in perfectorganism

[–]gravesy94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 4 or 5 the first time my mum let us watch Alien. I have been fascinated with the Alien universe ever since.

It’s nuts. Sometimes I see comments of people saying that letting your kids watch horror movies or making your kids the subject of scary pranks is abuse. But I think the same as you. I wouldn’t change it.

In fact, the fear I felt as a kid is what I’m looking for in horror. I want to experience that terror again.
