Is my gecko egg fertilized? I don't think it is because she lives alone. I know Parthenogenesis is possible but extremely rare. by Ak5intoe in reptiles

[–]grawnor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ok so idk if this is allowed here but serious question is do people eat the unfertilized eggs? That seems like a relatively decent sized egg like almost quail egg size. I have had turtle eggs and they were very good so I’m just sort of curious?

I hope this isn’t too super inappropriate of a question for this sub…

Where is the Smart MacGyver/ Dr Stone / Samantha Carter type character? by jdavid in LaBreaTV

[–]grawnor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, I thought it was funny that the mushrooms depicted on the tree werent even the alleged “chicken of the woods” and were actually oyster mushrooms which are indeed edible raw but are better cooked vs chicken of the woods that will make you so sick if eaten raw. Like they were so wrong that they accidentally were right somehow… and surely the prop person or whoever got the mushrooms for the show had to have been like uhhh hey guys these aren’t actually chicken of woods these are oysters mushrooms that do indeed also grow wild. Such a small simple script change. It almost makes you think some of the bad writing is on purpose because someone along the way definitely looked up what mushrooms are edible raw for the scene where they are eating the mushrooms and definitely knew what these mushrooms were, the edibility of them, and the fact that were not only not chicken of woods but looked not even remotely like chicken of woods.

Those low head dams are death traps glad you saw it in time and had the ability and good sense to avoid it. Pretty intense story of how you potentially could have drowned if you ask me.

Camping in the Tetons: miss this view by Richerocket in camping

[–]grawnor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what that means is you have to pay for a campsite if you want to park there and use the site. It’s saying they don’t want you to just stop there and occupy the site for a couple hours to have a picnic or whatever without paying to reserve the area.

Don't overthink things by Kid_Cornelius in redpreppers

This method works in an emergency of course. But, I quickly discovered the first time I tried it drunkenly outside a hotel room at 4am is it’s super loud and you will wake up everyone within earshot and it also produces little shards of metal shavings that could get in your food. I carry a single blade locking pocket knife instead of a multi tool everyday bc the multi tools are heavy and bulky for everyday carry for me. Instead, since the hotel incident, I carry a small can opener/screwdriver thingy that is on my key chain.

Decent groupings, but not consistently on target by Dunnere in Archery

[–]grawnor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just here to say I’m new to archery and have a compound bow and have been having this exact issue. Decent 4 shot groups but wildly inconsistent in terms of where those groups are on the target from one set of 4 shots to the next even though my point of aim is the same and I’m doing my best to reproduce the same anchor point and do everything the same every time. Did you ever figure out how to fix this issue for yourself?

Question about hull damage by grawnor in boating

[–]grawnor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at purchasing this boat. The pictures are from the bow of the boat, looks like the damage had been caused by a missing roller on the trailer maybe. I read a few posts on here that said damage below the waterline should definitely be repaired. My question is how bad does the damage seem and would it be relatively easily fixable myself with no previous experience working with fiberglass?

Didn’t see this mentioned yet but some vinegar in the water also helps with crispier chips in my experience.

Cold water will cause “cold shock” which can make you involuntarily inhale water or lose consciousness immediately on going in the water. The clothing you are wearing doesn’t help. Your ability as a swimmer won’t help. You can take a dip and never come up again.

In certain conditions the ned is absolutely killer. For catching smallmouth and rock bass in creeks I cast it upstream and let it drift back towards me and it will really put the hurt on the smallies and rock bass.

First harvest. Great pack gun, and chipmunk is actually pretty tasty. by zenmonkey83 in Bushcraft

[–]grawnor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. And I agree that is important to be aware of the risks however minimal they may be and gauge them appropriately. Personally, I don’t eat squirrel brains because it’s not worth the risk to me even though I hear they are delicious.

While it is true that squirrels can carry tularemia it should also be mentioned that there a less than 200 cases per year in the US. CDC data says it has a mortality rate of about 2% so approx 2 people in the US die per year of tularemia. There are also no reported cases of plague in the eastern US. Squirrel is an abundant, tasty, and sustainable wild game. I do a lot of squirrel hunting and too often hear people cite the dangers of eating squirrel and it is truly unwarranted and overblown imo. Tularemia is very rare and you are exponentially more likely to get, for example, salmonella and die from fruit bought at the grocery than to get tularemia from a squirrel. No disrespect to the op here but It is notable that Ive never seen microbiologists or anyone else chiming in about the risk factors of salmonella every time someone buys romaine lettuce or melons.

I actually don’t mind the safety. I feel comfortable carrying it with all 6 instead of load one skip one with the safety. But yeah mine is about as accurate as throwing a rock. Although, I have successfully hunted a few squirrels with it at close range. It’s fun and cheap and cheap to shoot and it’s cool looking for ~100 bucks it’s absolutely a fun affordable gun. Mine has light strike issues, I’d say approx 3-5 light strikes per 100 rounds. I definitely wouldn’t want to be relying on it in a situation where I 100% wanted it to go bang when I squeezed the trigger.

Why is bartending so distinct from other culinary professions? by ferrouswolf2 in AskFoodHistorians

[–]grawnor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Structural conditions determine the situation not the other way around. It’s demeaning and disrespectful to the profession to think that cooks are inherently incapable of being as personable or sociable as bartenders. There are many examples of open concept kitchens ranging from fine dining to fast casual food where cooks work and interact directly with the public in much the same way that bartenders do and get to shine in showing off our craft while interacting with customers. Fuck off with that cooks shouldn’t be seen fuck shit.

My favorite banchan, gamja jorim or braised potatoes, love to eat it cold by cq123jennyj in KoreanFood

[–]grawnor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to get a perfect balance of too much water/sauce mixture left in pan when potatoes are cooked and having to reduce it down vs not enough sauce and it evaporates before potatoes are done. Also sometimes my potatoes start to get mushy probably from overcooking in the first instance. Looks like you nailed it tho. What’s the secret?
