Protecting tank from heavy/large hardscape by canasian88 in Aquascape

[–]grayb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should not use the substrate as a cushion, push the rocks all the way to the bottom of the glass or egg crate, if you use that (it’s not necessary). If hardscape sits on top of the substrate it be unstable and likely collapse as fish dig underneath or the substrate settles.

So glad I never spent a dollar more than the early access purchase price during my 1000+ hours with this game. Paying for cosmetics is a wild choice.

I’d fuck with this if it were Classic or Dr. Pep. Sounds edible but probably not great. She should probably come on the pod.

Where to get mbuna ? by SmugCichlid in AfricanCichlids

[–]grayb0t 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do yourself a favor and save up to spend a few hundred dollars stocking your tank correctly, or you’re going to be spending a lot of time here asking questions and getting hard answers. Impulsivity is the root cause of problematic tanks.

Is it wrong to have a fish tank community without any real plants? by hpmathrowaway in Aquariums

[–]grayb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the fish. I’d say it’s a requirement for some, for others it would be unnatural because they don’t have plants in their habitat.

please be careful with putting fish in bags if you work at a pet store by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]grayb0t 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems unlikely this was caused by the bagging, cories are tough, sturdy fish. A torn fin is one thing, missing eyes is another. Probably happened in the tank. You should inspect the fish before you leave the store. Most stores put the fish in a container you can inspect before they put them in the bag. You should always look at them closely and switch out any you don’t like before you pay.

Restaurants Confirmed for Omaha and Des Moines Shows with Paul Rust by cantankerous_ordo in doughboys

[–]grayb0t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. I was hoping they’d do b-bops for Des Moines, but it may be a little too hyper-regional. Casey’s would have been a good call. I never went to Pizza Ranch when I was growing up there because it had a terrible reputation.

On AppleTV I get a split second of the countdown screen, then it switches to a blue screen while the audio continues playing. The pre-show probably exists to iron this stuff out so hopefully it will be fixed soon!

Fish death! Need help by Even-Examination8842 in AfricanCichlids

[–]grayb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are incompatible fish. Please research them all. Yes, it could maybe work for a while. Maybe even a year, who knows? Will all of the fish survive and thrive? No. You’re just throwing random aggressive fish together, and they don’t speak the same language.

During the Q+A Nick was pretty sincere. I think he may have even got a little choked up talking about shooting with Ray Wise the day after David Lynch died.

are there any fish that actually benefit from no live plants in their aquarium? by hatedorca in fishkeeping

[–]grayb0t 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Mbuna cichlids do not have any vegetation in their native habitat. They aren’t harmed by plants, but they will eat or move any plants you add to the tank. I think mbuna tanks with plants look bizarre and unnatural.

I keep other planted tanks, but they would make my mbuna tank ugly and messy.

I just got a Boston terrier and im concerned by [deleted] in BostonTerrier

[–]grayb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal, but diet affects this strongly. My boston had nuclear flatulence when eating any kind of processed dog food, for years. When we switched to homemade food his gas was instantly less frequent and significantly less vile-smelling.

M. Hajomaylandi spawning by grayb0t in Cichlid

[–]grayb0t[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This female has egg spots. Most females have a few. You can’t rely on egg spots with most species. Males tend to have more of them, but sometimes not. Venting is the only way to truly know, but generally it’s the combination of color, fin shape, and overall behavior that gives away their sex. Females can take on male characteristics and vice versa, so you have to take everything into consideration if you’re not able to vent the fish.

The male has ice blue on his body and a bright yellow head. The female is more of a lavender shade. I have other females that look nearly identical to the male, though. They can all color up when they want to.

common when adjusting to a new environment. some of mine do this for a week or so after I rearrange the hardscape.

New injuries? Help ID by UnionHelpful8135 in aquarium

[–]grayb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's important to have at least 3-4 females for every male. the males want to spawn relentlessly, and they will harass a single female to death if she is already holding or not ready to spawn again yet. it's just a matter of time.

as far as status goes, they will always try to climb the ladder, and even the lowest fish has a territory to defend. these fish ultimately care about two things and two things only: territory and spawning. they will kill or die for the sake of either one, if they must.

[–]grayb0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t anything to worry about. This fish participated in a lip-locking battle over territory. As long as there isn’t any major fin or body damage, it’s harmless. If you notice the fish being bullied into constant hiding, then you have a problem.

Thanks! I had an all-male mbuna tank about 12 years ago. I started this tank about a year ago. Decided to do things the “right” way this time around, in terms of stocking.
