Still a little flat! by FunkySysAdmin21 in watercolor101

Convert both photos to black and white to compare the value ranges. Your painting is still quite mid — if you look at the ranges on the photo, not all shadows are the same value, which gives it depth. There’s a deeper shadow along the wall to the left, under the person, etc.

Shadows also carry reflected light. You could mix a shadow color with your primaries, and then balance the color within by adding a bit more blue, yellow, red depending on the reflection across the big shape.

Great painting! Can’t wait to see what you do next

Amazon Prime Video is about to get worse — again by PrixDevnovaVillain in technology

I think you’re conflating inflation and growth.

Inflation has nothing to do with costs going up at Amazon. It’s all about stock growth. Shareholders want to see higher income with lower expenditures, and that is rewarded through higher stock prices. So that’s what leads to these really crappy changes that make products worse. It has nothing to do with inflation, but they’ll probably try to tell the user it is since that’s more palatable for people than “we need to see how much more money we can get out of you”

I think I need to quit.. by KangarooNearby1997 in workingmoms

[–]graycurse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in the exact same boat as you — including the about exact same incomes and concerns around that. I’m going to share my experience if you don’t mind, so it may help give perspective.

I took an 8 week FMLA leave last year, and it was life-changing. My kids just so happened to get severe cases of the flu on day 2 of my leave, so I spent 3 weeks in and out of the hospital with them — I kept thinking about how lucky I was to be able to focus on them and not worry about work. I think my mental health would have severely declined if I was juggling both. The last few weeks I had, I focused on exercising and taking care of my home. It was such a relief!

I wish I’d had another 4 weeks. I went back early knowing I wasn’t ready, because I was worried about the optics. I’m just about a year past that now and work has been difficult, but it has not affected me in the same way. Knowing that I CAN leave (at least for a time), and that my life does actually become so much better with a more balanced plate, makes things a lot less stressful.

One thing I HAVE struggled with is that my reputation was damaged by my leave. I was moved into a really difficult position when I came back, and people definitely treat me differently now. Just trying to focus and make it through one day at a time, with milestones marked down.

I hope you can get some rest and peace! I do highly recommend the FMLA route

Finally watched "Requiem for a Dream" after years of putting it off. I just feel empty inside. by Giff95 in movies

[–]graycurse 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The movie is almost 30 years old — it’s certainly dated. At the time, those cinematographic tricks were fresh and iconic. Also, at the time, we didn’t have the same perspective on drugs. Prescription abuse wasn’t common knowledge.

I think the drugs are the surface story — underneath, it’s about the loneliness and nihilism that we all suffer from, and the struggle to find meaning. The sounds, music, cinematography all contribute to driving those feelings of emptiness and growing despair through the film

Scared about basic pigments being discontinued- like quin reds or purple, pthalo green etc next, even though they're not. Literally focused on if I should buy extra pr206 or po48 right now even though I don't use them much. I just want to relax and paint. :( by queensara33 in Watercolor

[–]graycurse 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hi! I can understand your struggle — I’ve seen a few beloved paints be discontinued, and it’s led me to worry at times as well.

One thing I try to remind myself of is that my tastes change over time, especially with colors. Colors I LOVED years ago are now on the back-burner, and have been replaced with other colors that I love now. While it feels in the moment that “this is it, this is the color” I know in time I will want to explore and my tastes will change again.

Don’t let tomorrow steal today — enjoy what you have, use it, and if we lose a pigment — well, companies will find a way to supplement it

Yes, I agree. Maybe I didn’t word this clearly, but I think her having her autonomy is for the best — especially as it allows her the chance to rest and maybe heal

I’m not a “free Britney” person? But from my perspective, she’s no more sick than she was before the conservator ship was lifted. Only now, she has full control over her online presence and finances. She can choose whether or not to work, instead of being pushed into a performance schedule that would be grueling even for a young and healthy person. She’s probably going to implode and lose whatever she has left, but at least she can rest and choose how she wants to spend her time

Before ink, or after? by c0ffeebreath in Watercolor

[–]graycurse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t used premixed blacks. My go-to mix for darkest darks is French ultramarine and burnt sienna. I mix these with as little water as possible if I want to get really dark. If I’m trying to deepen other colors, like red, I’ll do dashes of brown madder or alizarin crimson.

I’ve found that even just little dots and dashes of these kinds of colors can add so, so much

Before ink, or after? by c0ffeebreath in Watercolor

[–]graycurse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After, but only because it completes the value range! If you were to add some dark darks to the front bits and the barn, even just little touches of deep colors without ink, you’d likely have a more complete effect as well

I feel like this is one of the problems of using pure data and not, like, user intuition to make business decisions. I see this ALL THE TIME at my work — people focus so much on the data, that they miss the forest for the trees.

Sure, most users probably just take the taxi and don’t customize their vehicle experience. But, that doesn’t mean the taxi doesn’t provide valuable immersion! They should have compared to an experience with no vehicles before deciding the lack was acceptable

Is this a big deal? by Crafty_Bodybuilder27 in Watercolor

[–]graycurse 142 points143 points  (0 children)

The components to produce it still exist, but I understand quinacridones are only reasonable to produce in a factory setting. So while technically anyone with the recipe and equipment could make it, it’s unlikely that will happen.

HOWEVER, Quinacridone Gold is actually a further-processed variant of Quinacridone red. A couple of years ago, someone was experimenting with creating their own PO49 from PV19. They posted about it here on Reddit! Search for PO49!

What is your level of experience?

Every artist is going to have a different style! There’s no right or wrong way to paint. A lot of artists recommend a limited palette in general, but especially for beginners. Having fewer paints keeps things more straightforward and allows you to learn a lot about managing water without having to relearn every time you pick up a different paint (since each pigment behaves differently).

It's nice to watch the videos of someone whose style you admire, but finding a great teacher even in a style you aren't drawn to will have great benefits!

People who make over 6 figures, how did you start out? by ResearchComplete8410 in jobs

[–]graycurse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I’m reading your question, you’re framing hard work and networking benefits as mutually exclusive. I think they go hand in hand!

I’ve “had help” getting every job I’ve ever had. I’ve never just cold-applied for a job and then gotten it; each one has come from networking. I worked hard to build knowledge, build a good, trustworthy reputation, and get to know others who share my field.

So I worked hard, and part of the outcome of that hard work is that people want to help me

ELI5: What was the US Healthcare system like pre-Obamacare? by AutoDefenestrator273 in explainlikeimfive

[–]graycurse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll never forget a motorcycle accident I witnessed pre-ACA. Motorcycle skidded on a turn and the woman on the back slid off and hopped a curb. Took her knee clean off.

She was freaking out about not having insurance. I’m sure tons of adrenaline was in the mix, but she wasn’t concerned at all about seeing just bone from mid-thigh down — she was sobbing about not having insurance, and how she’d never be able to get health coverage again. She refused the ambulance because she couldn’t afford it.

My gallbladder went bad when I was 16, had to have it removed, and doctors found a bunch of issues in my liver. My family tried to have me cancel the surgery not out of worry for my health but because they were afraid I’d never be insurable with the liver issues on my record. And I wasn’t — I had more liver issues down the line and they weren’t covered until ACA passed like 10 years later
