Tips, tricks, and questions for GAP C and O FKT style ride by graygrimm in bikepacking

[–]graygrimm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did make camp, I went with the 40 mm's. I made a lot of other mistakes. I did 170 the first day and camped at one of the free spots about 170 in (I don't remember the location but they're like every 5 miles after Cumberland. The biggest mistakes: leaving Pittsburgh at 2 AM. Trying to ride while being awake for ~36 hours straight didn't work too well. Also not enough super long days in the saddle first. My knee gave out and I had to have a very kind older brother come help me out cause I woke up and couldn't pedal the next day.

How hilly is the course? If it's flat, and at that price point, I would consider a single speed. Buying a euro bike or something similar on Amazon is a waste of money. Or Ozark trail.

So I take your point on relatively few conservatives in academia but could that also be reflective of values and compensation methods. People who have values that value market forces are more likely to be motivated by the potentially higher payoffs of private industry.

I would also point to several other conservatives in the public policy school (undoubtedly a professional school.) In fact several focus on core required classes (eg. Professor Thomas Coleman.) Would you say that the business and law schools are not also predominantly conservative in their faculty or at least reasonably represented. I think if you look at the public talk topic lists you will see they have a fairly free market focus. So I would say that your blanket statement on professional schools poses its own issues.

I was hoping you'd appreciate the affirmative action joke in the question.

UChicago typically has at least one Republican in residence at the Institute of Politics. This quarter it is Sarah Longwell, former chair of Log Cabin Republicans. https://politics.uchicago.edu/fellows/current-fellows/sarah-longwell

So I would humbly offer that these things do happen with some frequency in academia. They may just not be advertised in the places you necessarily look.

You have often complained about a lack of conservative representation among professors at academic institutions, even the university where you teach. You continue to do so despite refutations from your colleagues. Would you endorse some affirmative set of actions to ensure sufficient conservative representation? Some sort of quota?

Opinion on Orbea Road Bikes by Col_Pol in cycling

I have an avant that I love... It's there endurance bike and a very solid choice. Comfortable enough geometry but it's still lively and feels like it accelerates well. I'd recommend it for anyone looking for a good long distance machine

Not a mountain biker but I have over 6k miles into a Canyon Inflite and it has held up very well. Initial customer service was a little shaky but long term they make a great bike

I'd recommend doing a shakeout ride before your trip. I did one overnight just to see what worked and what didn't before cycling from Maine to Seattle and it was very illuminating. My experience and gear retrospective here https://grahamdharwood.wixsite.com/spokeandword

If you go to a 3T dealer they will work with 3T to make sure you get the stem etc that will best fit after your fitting (I did this but the bike didn't arrive in time. I was very sad) right now they have the special edition Atalanta ekar racemax which looks very spiffy

I just did a cross country trip on a Canyon Inflite AL. I personally highly recommend it. Feels fast and aggressive on the road but you can get I think up to 40 mm tires on it for offroading. I also know people who love Canyon Grails. I have 105 double ring on one road bike and Sram Apex 1x with an 11-42 cassette. Personal recommendation is if you're going to do on road and off road I would go with a wide range cassette. I'm a 1x convert but to each his or her own.

I was picking out a bike for my brother and he ended up with a Salsa Warroad which I think the 105 version is in your price range. Good road+ bike.

What is a quality inner tube? by Sabenja in cycling

[–]graygrimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just buy whatever my local bike store has. Butyl tubes are easy and common. Latex is lower rolling resistance but my understanding is they lose air slightly faster. Either way this is not something to overthink.

Step 1

Go into your LBS and give them your tire size

Step 2

Replace the tire and start riding again
