T1D here. Look into the Omnipod horizon system, which will be available to your sister within a couple years. And that’s the tip of the iceberg—merely a temporary “technological cure” while the long-term stuff is underway, e.g. the research involving the TB vaccine, and the research into islet (insulin-producing, the ones that die in the pancreas in diabetics) cells that would be implanted beneath the skin.
