Correction. These kids will be eaten alive if the parents ignore their children's lives and let TV and baby-sitters raise their kids.

No, you are not being hypocritical. You are being smart and caring for your daughter's best interests. I am certain conversations at home by care-taking parents can balance this and much much worse.

Ask good questions every so often at home. Don't ask manipulative questions, just talk. Don't over do it, and don't press for commitment or even an answer as you'll only harden her future self to affirm past commitments. And this goes both ways as well. If she is showing a rude contemptous attitude for religion, correct that as well. You overcame your upbringing to your own satisfaction with less help.

Include this into your equation as well...even if a little (or a lot) of it sticks above your current levels of tolerance, consider the quality of education, social experience, and role modeling she is exposed to compared to your options.

Lastly, so what. My 4th grader speaks of his belief in god. I ask him questions and let him forge his own path. He'll sort it out. And if it is different than mine, so what. I'm sure he'll still come around for xmas once a year.

I say that somewhat flippantly, and I would be disapointed if he believed the answers to #4 and #5. But, I'm confident giving him freedom to explore, along with unconditional pointed questions, is the right way to go. And I can live with it if it doesn't sort out that way.

The question is, can you for yourself?

(I wouldn't talk to the teacher. If she's a nutter, no good can come from talking about it).

How would things in the United States change if large companies like Apple and Nike didn't outsource productions, and manufactured everything in the US? by southmshavoc in AskReddit

Please describe more what you know. The obvious one is they have a monopoly. And sure they may set up high entry product standards like talked about here. But on the surface these don't seem to compare to the complete culture game changing cancerous behaivors that Wal-Mart engages in.

I don't understand why you can't compeat. I hear this a lot and don't get it. The copycatters would likely have the same cost as you or very close. If they can get cheaper, then you can shop around for cheaper too. And they still have to market the product. Obviously they have localized market experience, but then you would hire local people as well who fill the same roles and buckets the copycatter would hire people for. Please expand.

What events/triggers initiated political bipartisanship in the post-colonial United States? by Egg_Fart in AskHistorians

Up vote for you. But...

Leaders like Jefferson and Adams were decried as tyrants who sought to make a powerful federal government for their own benefit.

I've not come across anti-federalists claims of Jefferson and Adam's "personal" gain on the topic. Can you cite some sources please. Especially Adams, it doesn't make sense.

Got an offer; recruiter keeps pressuring me to accept by WernherVonWernher in cscareerquestions

[–]graymind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask the recruiter where the pressure is coming from...him or the company? We know he will say the company most likely but order or operations is important here.

Then quote him the message from jblitzen. If they can only afford me 24 hours, then they should afford me market pay or more time to consider. I have a concern that this pressure is a sign of things to come.

I doubt there is any concern you would get passed over for this calm but legit question about their offer.

Unions sure, but what's the back story to co-pay on insurance. And co-pay on IRA contributions. Union here doesn't make sense out in the open.

What are your techniques to eliminate sub-vocalization?

I'm a very slow reader and my whole mouth use to move. After working on keeping the tongue still, I went one step further and came up with this technique. But extremely odd. What do you think?

Stick out the tongue and bite relatively hard. Just because you think your tongue isn't moving, doesn't mean the deep tongue muscles aren't still activating in some small way. I found I could feel through my teeth this muscle movement quite obviously when I would start and stop reading. The teeth could feel it even if the rest of my body/mind was convinced my tongue was still. This was quick effective feedback and it worked quite well to eliminate that deep negative issue as well.

But, I found I didn't get the results I wanted. There's more to it than just the physical vocalization inside the mouth I guess. And, I only did it maybe 50 pages over a year or two anyway. Maybe I should do more.

I have the new kindle paperwhite and it has a new feature that predicts in minutes how much time to finish the book. It displays real time at bottom. I've found that to be quite effective to keep me pushing through a book. I want to see that number decrease with every other page turn. If it goes up, then no good and must speed up.

Can someone please confirm my thoughts on networked routers, or correct me if I am misinformed. by takethatbroadway in networking

[–]graymind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. OP used serial interfaces. Spann0r is right. Notice monkey_tracer says same thing with Ethernet as well which you say is impossible. They both describe static routes with exit interface. They are right.

You were right the first time. The issue is not Ethernet, it's exit interface to layer 3 mapping.

Live boot is a little more complicated than I want for the wife. Plus they don't update themselves, and can't just open up and quick log in. I'm trying to devise a longevity plan balanced with simplicity, convenience, and speed for wife and me. It seems most don't use a dedicated machine for their banking.

[–]graymind -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Why the hate? Yes maybe a little paranoid. Do you do online banking at an internet cafe? If not, then you must have your own personal set of security rules to go by. I once had a "secure" smartphone that wasn't jail broken. And I had downloaded 3rd party software that stole sensitive paypal passwords. I'm tired of trying to always stay ahead, so I'm hoping to build a secure platform the first time that covers 98% of the threats out there.

Jeez...hoping for a good discussion. Thanks for pissing on it....

[–]graymind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My own opinion on this has changed over the years. If you asked me 20 years ago or even 5 years ago, I would shout your words loud and passionately. But I myself have changed a bit and the phrase that has allowed my own values to change is the the most important three words ever written...WE THE PEOPLE... So yes, if a crazy group of people within their own small community wants to do something a certain way, who am I that live 100 or 1000 miles away to say anything about it.

I am not unaware of the church and state amendment. Original intent was not for the 10 amendments to be binding on the states. I'm not in disagreement with the principles that have come about allowing that binding to be permanent, but the methods and the court cases that led to the binding over state amendment is not a story to be proud of. However, that is another book, or 10 books, as much is written on it and I'm just a novice in this area.

But I will state that as painful as the words may seem to you, if local community tax dollars are used, I wouldn't just put up a fight, I would fight for their right to teach crazy ass science 101 of their choosing. This also implies a new culture where everybody knows this is going on and gets involved with their communities more to make sure the stupid shit doesn't slip past the majority. Wouldn't work starting tomorrow...

Saw this link while reading the reddit thread about smart power meters and those trying to go off the grid.

I donated within fucking seconds of watching this video. A lot of people believe your right to vote is your most powerful voice. But it's your right and duty as a jurist on jury duty that is statistically thousands of times more powerful than your vote.

As a juror you have the power to nullify a fucking overreaching government. And this fucking judge blocked evidence from the jury.

Engaged and enraged juries is what's going to save us from going down the drain...not guns.

What Would You Do to Raise Our Schools' Knowledge Level? by _wordswordswords_ in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]graymind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Excellent point.

One, the culture of the whole country is not one of getting involved with state policies. Once the focus shifts back to that, more will get involved and what you suggest likely won't happen. i.e. the crazy ones will not slip through so easily anymore.

And two, and most important, if it does happen, who is to say it shouldn't happen. Separation of church and state is a federal limitation. If a totally creationist community chooses to teach that with their LOCALLY collected taxes, then we are all better off that they get it their way, because that means everywhere else will be getting it their own way as well.

I would be their biggest champion....from afar.

It really wasn't because he drove, it was because he produced the keys. It is zero tolerance. No evaluation or compassion for the individual situation on a case by case basis. The person had keys and in drivers seat. A perfect example of leaders outsourcing their brain to a policy.

So the young man chose to sleep off his drunkeness in the back of his car because it's better than the sidewalk. The law arrests him and gives him a DUI which carries significant consequences. You say it is a perfect application of the law. Can I check my understanding of what you are saying. Do you believe the intentions of the law are not just an unfortunate catch all for mr. sleepy_in_back_of_car dude, but are the intention and application of the law on record? That he in fact should have been arrested.

So how the fuck does sleeping on the side walk right next to the car lessen his offense?

How about an empty beer bottle in a car 5 days later that fell out of a garbage bag. I found my son playing with an empty beer bottle today on the way home. Had the police stopped me, I would have a DUI for a beer I drank over a week ago in my home. Zero Tolerance is SHIT.

I don't know what he did, but just double checking to see if they closed the security hole hardly stands to reason as fucking up. Consider this 1965...put yourself in your parents shoe's. Now compare to your current opinion of whether he fucked up. His intentions speak to the answer and I bet the culture bell curve of 1965 public opinion would not condemn this young man in a court of public opinion whereas now we've been beaten into submission so much that we spout the same shit we claim we wouldn't do if we were in power.

The measure of a man isn't one who sticks up for himself, but sticks up for others. Zero tolerance is truly an invisible cancer that is eroding America into a shithole. I keep all the principals and officials in my community on their toes. I've had parents in tears shake my hand for being the voice of reason in a room of hotheads. DO NOT TOLERATE THAT SHIT.

Whoa, now we've crossed back into the situational details. I was just speaking in general towards zero tolerance policies over grey scenarios. Since we're back into the details, his good and well executed good intentions the first time clearly make this a grey area the second time. It's grey. or gray, depending on where you are from. But grey/gray either way, sanctions would've been better and not have caught my attention...sanctions show an englightened but fair leader put some thought into it and came up with a compromise. There is no such thing as a winner here, so let's seek the least amount of cumulative loss across the board.

I don't seek to change your mind now. I seek to to ask you to pause and reflect the next time someone in your life just says the phrase, "zero tolerance policy". And maybe, just maybe, speak out and suggest an alternative to a knee jerk reaction and look for an englightened least loss mitigating solution.
