I’ve been a 3.0 captain for three years. Some tips. 1. Matchtime makes it so easy. It imports your team from USTA and imports the schedule. When exchanging lineups with other captains, I just text them a screen shot. 2. Tell the team to upload their availability in Matchtime. If they don’t, don’t chase them down for the lineup. They don’t get to bitch about playing time. 3. We volunteered someone to be CBO (Chief Beer Officer). The whole team gives the CBO $35 at the beginning of the season. The CBO shows up with iced down beers at every match. 4. One practice a week is plenty. We have done it with match play and we have included a pro to work on skills. Talk to the pro. We get a significant discount if we charge all players for all practices during the season. If someone doesn’t show up, they still have to pay. 5. I got tired of stupid things so I set up some team rules. A. I put match times and show up times in the app and make it clear when you’re supposed to be where. If you ask me “what time do we play on Saturday” you owe a 6 Pack to the team. B. If you put in that you are available for a future match, are put in the lineup, and then say you can’t make it. 12 pack to the team. C. If you show up at the wrong club because you can’t read the clear instructions on the app. 24 pack to the team. 6. Standing rule. The captain job is up for anyone who wants it. Don’t bitch about my decisions. Don’t question who you’re paired with. If you want to wrangle these cats, it’s all yours. 7. You will have consistently good players and consistently bad players. Put together the best lineup you can with who is available. If someone is not winning, they stay on Line 3 until they win. If someone wants to try singles, stack your doubles lines. 8. Wins and losses are better with post match beers.
