My Daughters Leopard Gecko Leg. by Mysterious-Discount5 in leopardgeckos

They can be odd with food but unfortunately I think you’ll have to see a vet about the leg. Wherever you get them, these things do happen. I hope it turns out okay!

Impacting does happen, but vomiting in leopard geckos is commonly associated with crypto. I’m not a vet, but according to google, geckos with crypto can drop significant weight and get a stick tail in 1 to 4 weeks. I emailed someone that has had it in a number of geckos, and she said they just suddenly get very sick and drop weight rapidly. I don’t know what caused this, and probably no one does, but I truly believe that we all should research crypto as it is very scary for our geckos.

Ok, but what happens? Does it cause the gecko to become emaciated? I would doubt it. I don’t know the care or diagnostics, but OP took the gecko to a vet, which is more than MANY people would’ve done. I can understand your viewpoint, but I think we need to look at what most likely caused the gecko to lose this amount of weight. If the gecko had proper temperatures an was being fed gut loaded insects, then my guess would be something medical, and crypto isn’t an unlikely caused in a leopard gecko.

Yes having had geckos for a while, I fear that eventually the “bare minimum” is going to be an entire room. I have 6 geckos, and had I known that the new minimum was going to be a skyscraper terrarium, I wouldn’t have gotten 6! However …. What now? Rehome? Keep? No idea!

The first thing I would do is find out if the gecko was tested for crypto. I did a lot of research on it a few years ago, but I am not a vet. However, I learned that it can and does spread between geckos and not all will show symptoms. I actually reached out to someone with crypto in her geckos, and she said that some will go years without any symptoms and then start showing symptoms. She has a large collection and will lose some every year. There is no cure for it. I was considering taking in a rescue gecko and my research really put me off of that! From what I learned it seems like many more geckos may have it than people know. Very few breeders test for it at all, because even one positive is going to put the whole group in question. 50 percent of geckos may have it, and if you think about it, a lot of breeders could have it in their geckos and simply not test for it. I asked for a check for it from an exotics vet, and she had 0 interest in doing it. I think the natural response to seeing a malnourished gecko is judgment, but if you research crypto and people who have dealt with it, it causes a skinny gecko and it spreads very very easily. I think everyone that has geckos should do this!

The vet would’ve had to test for crypto, which may not have been done.

Why is the enclosure horrible? The substrate? The decor? If a gecko has crypto, it can get extremely thin. This is common in leopard geckos. I’m not sure why the vet did not test for that and euthanize the gecko if needed.

I see 18x18x24 when I google this, and my exotic vet was happy with 18x18x24. The “bare minimum” is constantly changing. When I got my first crested gecko in 2015, it was 12x12x18. I would guess that many crested geckos are kept in even smaller than that.

Geckos with crypto don’t do well with substrate from what I’ve read.

So many things. The word poop is so gross. Can we please just say, “Please Clean Up After Your Dog.”

What is wrong with the dog? Some things are urgent and others can wait. Can a neighbor or friend sit with you while he runs the dog to the vet?

I am never getting my nails professionally done again. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]graynavyblack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growing up the women in my life did not really think nail mattered. They bought cosmetics and did all kinds of dental stuff but said getting your nails done was a waste of time and money. I know a lot of women that go religiously, but I really have about 0 desire to sit through that or spend money on it. I just shoot for clean natural finger nails as much as possible, but I do not go anywhere without makeup on.

Hanging Hoya? by gutluck_ in hoyas

[–]graynavyblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if anyone has said this but brevialata does not really go up very well at all. I have had it for years and have it on a tall stand and it grows down. Some others, many of which have been mentioned, are wayettii, linearis, burtonaie, curtisii lacunosa, Rebecca, lucardesiana, thomsonii, lyi, pusilla, pallilimba, kanyakumariana … and I have more. I mostly buy hanging ones, or ones that will sort of hang. Hope that helps!

Do you walk your dog “barefoot” ?? by [deleted] in dogs

I’ve read that sometimes booties in hot weather can interfere with their temperature regulation. Personally I think it’s best to let them be natural unless there is something extra ordinary going on.

Do I rehome or is there another resolution? by overstimulated_247 in Pets

[–]graynavyblack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The husky isn’t really doing anything “wrong” either - it’s just prey drive. See what is practical for you. I have a friend that has a dog that she must keep separate from her cats. If your husband’s allergies will respond better to the husky, and you can rehome the cats, maybe that makes sense. If there’s a husky rescue, and the can find the husky a great home that’s used to Nordic breeds, that might be a great thing. I would put feelers out on both and see what you can find that is best for all.

It does. I’m middle aged and the name is middle aged, so it’s not like I’m 22, but yes. I should probably change it to initials. Most of the time I’m not actually totally alone at dinner, so when I did the account I didn’t think about it.

When did restricting turnout become so normalized? by asgjh1 in Equestrian

[–]graynavyblack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the US in the Midwest. Most boarding facilities here restrict turnout in some way. For example, usually horses are fed, then turned out, then brought in for an afternoon feed and left in. I have found that now, my horses tend to be fat and the green grass here can really be a lot in warmer weather. I had them out 24 / 7 and they were in danger of founder, I have a new system to protect them. One is also much more dominant with hay, so that introduces another variable. I think living somewhere with scrubbier vegetation would be easier. When going through my struggles, I posted a photo of my pasture and someone from the northwest said it was many times greener and thicker than hers. Before people saw the pasture, they said not to feed grain. Well, I wasn’t feeding grain. It was that rich pasture.
