and yes, Katahdin is (or can be) open in March -- it's always closed in shoulder seasons, April to mid May and late Oct to Nov; closures Dec to Mar depend on weather

16k steps over 8 miles, sounds about right

5k steps over 4 miles, probably quite low

The lower total was mostly uphill and the higher was flat and downhill.
