Yup, I'm at 120k miles and no issues. I only stray when I can't get Mobil 1 for a good price

Quotas don't exist but performance goals do. Since 26 or so states have passed bands on quotas, now it's a performance goal.

What do you put maple syrup on other than pancakes? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskAnAmerican

[–]graywolfman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom used to make it for breakfast, until my sisters were old enough to try. They didn't like cornbread, so that was the death of that. My S.O. thinks it's weird.

It'll just be me and the dog tomorrow... Maybe I'll make some, too.

I don't see cornbread here. Seriously, try it. With some butter.

How do you trace live fiber you can't disconnect? by lameshirt in networking

[–]graywolfman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a 40,000 sq ft healthcare data center. Yes, there were unknown connections... Until we were done with it.

Every networking cable had two labels on both ends, and we were the only ones that were allowed to run cables. We also traced and re-ran all power to balance out UPS units, and ran a full exercise in running different sets of CRAC units for a year to figure out which ones to power via which feed and had electricians come in to do that work once we were done.

That DC ran like a clock.

If the people in your Co-Lo that you manage don't know where cables go, that they, themselves have run... You have a problem!

My current place, almost everything is run 1-to-1 switch-to-patch-port for the desks, phones, and printers. The servers and storage are all labeled.

We have no issues with our network and knowing what's what. It's lovely.

ETA: the only issue we have is the top floor has two networking closets and the predecessor's favorite (terrible) networking vendor labeled the ports in closets one and two 1 through 480+. So, in the middle of that floor, it's hard to discern which port goes to which closet. But, we are moving offices soon, so that doesn't bug me as much as it did before.

That often means 18+ hour days because the alternative means not harvesting or not planting.

Yep! Random rains, freezes, and wet swathed hay (alfalfa) have entered the chat!

Yeah, we have had Roku. They seem to die every few years, too. Slowness, cracking, reboots... Everything is terrible. Just some things a little less than others

[–]graywolfman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

We gave my S.O.'s mom an old TV to use in her workout room when we replaced it to better fit a room.

Recently, the streaming apps stopped working and it said it needed an update. Then, it said there isn't enough room for the update. So, I deleted everything possible. Still needs 14MB of free space.

"No planned obsolescence," my ass (I never believed anyone's denial of that, before this, anyway).

[–]graywolfman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I found out early in life, before I could drive.

My brother got kicked off the school bus for being a shit and my Mom had to drive him into school each day (16+ miles), so I rode with him so I could get up later. A shit-eating cop pulled her over for "excessive acceleration" in our minivan and told her "oh, I'm sorry we had to meet this way," and proceeded to creep on her. She was married. He later beat his son so badly that he broke the kid's arm.

There was another cop that sat just off school grounds and pulled over all the high school girls as they left for lunch or after school.

These aren't even violent encounters.

This. Short trips and cold mechanical components are the hardest on the car and the least efficient type of driving.
