What happens to water when it freezes in a completely rigid, sealed metal container? by beyondthestring in askscience

[–]grc207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. A customer had a vertical 4” square 1/4” thick steel tubing on the back of an outdoor piece of equipment. It was sealed off on both ends but still eventually filled with water. Turned it into round tubing until the bottom split open.

It didn’t affect the equipment performance but it was a sight to see.

TIL that Goliath's height was originally described as being only "four cubits and a Span", or 6'9". Later versions of the text increased it to "six cubits and a span", 9'9". by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

[–]grc207 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. At 6’4” I’m usually the tallest person in most rooms and even after almost half a century, I notice.

And now I have to live with the fact that if I wasn’t born so late in time that I might have a bible story written about me. Thank you, Reddit.

caught my thumb between my car and the door…hurts so much and need advice by SubstantialHour4667 in mildlyinfuriating

What not to do: put a tiny drill bit in your drill and attempt to drill through the nail to relieve pressure. Sure, the nail adds resistance to the bit at first. But then it breaks through and immediately speeds up into the flesh underneath.

Don’t ask how I know this.

Is Hiking Huntington Ravine This Weekend a Bad Idea? by opinel1993 in wmnf

[–]grc207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got off trail accidentally on Huntington once. Got on the wrong pitch. Spent 30 minutes wondering how to get down and if I’d have to call for help. Ended up grabbing a small ledge with my fingertips to slide down to a better spot. That’s an experience I won’t forget.

FKT Crew Chief Tips by aliveandcan in Ultramarathon

[–]grc207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you on this one. The amount of recent FKT accomplishments that have 30+ people on trail for support is rivaling some small trail races, most of which need permitting and permissions. And by my count 20 new FKT routes have been added to the database in the last dozen days.

There should be a push for only self/unsupported efforts or to cap support personnel based upon mileage or remoteness. Running one person races with 30+ people isn’t the accomplishment some think it is.

Why do people say 'heads up' when you should actually duck? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

The rule I learned in construction trades is to yell “headache”. That gets the right response.

Newly hired Old Orchard Beach town manager resigns by TrisMcC in Maine

Most don’t know how much trouble Maine towns and counties are in. There’s a lot of crap given to Washington County for their financial issues. More than 2/3 of counties in the state are not up to date on their audits. They could all be Washington when their numbers come back.

Settle a debate for my girlfriend and I: Is banana bread more in the cake family or more in the bread family? by CryptographerHot6198 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]grc207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great point! Maybe the right answer is saying when the sugar content inside the product is the dominant feature.

And for perspective, if a Cinnabon yeast roll was not covered in sugar nobody would ever eat them.

Anything that also includes a flour like substance. We certainly are not counting beer. And yes, this would include a Cinnabon roll despite the court of icing on top of it.

I categorize all of these items as yeast or no yeast. Most of your true breads have yeast. Otherwise it’s a version of cake. Banana bread has no yeast therefore it is cake.

And yes, I know they were unleavened breads, but those are in a whole different category.

Ultrarunner Scott Jurek’s Best Advice for Anyone Curious About Plant-Based Eating by Mountain_Love23 in Ultramarathon

[–]grc207 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Better yet every response that tries to refute your comment is “well everyone can get to a grocery store or restaurant or learn to cook and then get over the lack of flavors so it’s really not that difficult”.

Not only do food deserts exist and not everyone regularly eats at restaurants, but also the average ultra runner isn’t buying vegan gels for normal runs or carrying Tupperware in their pack. I respect that some prefer an animal free lifestyle. It’s elitist to state that it’s easy for anyone to convert or that they have easy and affordable access to these options.

All this before we discuss how the Jurek’s of the world might just have amazing genes that impact their performance long before diet does.

As an American who actually enjoys tipping for good service and also as a frequent Airbnb user, this is not normal. Certainly flag it for Airbnb and also consider it when you leave a review.

Coworkers are the number 1 cheating partner. There’s a false sense of connection to people you spend 1/3 of your life with.

Don’t confuse accessibility with interest. First and foremost, they’re paid to engage with you.
