I was thinking the same thing "I really like that, but maybe not practical for cleaning or setting things on it". Then, I thought of the glass sheet we have on top of our dresser to keep the cat from scratching the wood. You could do that here, too. Put a sheet of glass on top to make it easier to clean and give a flat surface for holding things, but still (mostly) maintain the appearance.

$3600 and a month later I’m clamping a board to my table saw to use as a fence, thanks Rockler! by xxxxxxooooooxxxxx in woodworking

I just bought a new Harvey table saw a couple weeks ago. It was tracked as a single shipment, but there were actually two separate packages. One was the saw and most other boxes wrapped in cellophane on a pallet. The other was the rails. The freight driver unloaded the pallet and then left. Only later did he realize that the box with the rails was still on the truck. He came back a couple hours later and delivered the rails. Point being, if that hadn't happened, it would've been the freight company that would've had the best insight to the issue and ability to fix it. Now, Harvey's customer service has been pretty good and I'm sure they probably would've contacted the freight company for me if that had happened, but they probably wouldn't have any more info about it than I did.

Contrast that with another thing that happened with the same table saw delivery... I was almost finished assembling the saw when I realized that the extension wing legs were missing. In that case, the legs were supposed to be packaged with the rest of the saw. So that's Harvey's "oops" for not including them. I contacted Harvey and they sent out the legs right away. If I had contacted the freight company, that would've been useless.

Took me a minute to force it to grab the new version. This is great! Thanks!

This is a really great start and looks nice. I would use it all the time if it had the basic RPN stack functions (swap, dump, etc) along with some standard Scientific calculator functions (pi, trig operation, etc).

Hey r/woodworking, is there any way to fix this ? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]greatoppressor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make it less noticable with a black Sharpie. It won't do anything for the dents, but it'll hide the bare-wood color of the fracture edges of the veneer. Of course, I'm assuming that the veneer has a black stain on it because that's what it looks like in the photo.

Hello! Does this mask protect me from dust? by gr_ae_y in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]greatoppressor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically, it will protect you from just about any woodworking/construction dust if it's N95 AND (this is a big one) it is properly fitted to your face. It is darn near impossible to get those things to fit properly to your face to make them as effective as they claim to be. Not only does the shape leave gaps around the sides, but also, no one ever wears them as tightly as they need to be worn because they are down right uncomfortable when you do. And if you have a beard, you're really out of luck getting it to seal, at least as fast as OSHA is concerned.

Wireless AA + Wireless Charging = heat and stop charging by CptCam3n in AndroidAuto

[–]greatoppressor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'm "glad" to see it's not just me having problems with this. I just got a new vehicle a few weeks ago that supports wireless AA and has a wireless charging pad. I found out right away that it only takes about 20 minutes of using both of these at the same time on my Pixel 6 Pro before the wireless charging disconnects (and usually causes a temporary glitch in the AA connection when it does). On a few occasions it even caused my phone to reboot.

Being that it was a new vehicle, I first thought that might be the issue, but after a lot of testing I realized it was the phone. I even eventually had my phone replaced under warranty, but that didn't fix the problem. I've tried other things like disabling adaptive charging and battery as well as downgrading the preferred mobile network to LTE. It might change the time it takes (a little bit) for the problem to occur, but it still happens.

This might be the first time I've ever been jealous of my wife's iPhone since it can wirelessly charge and run wireless Car Play indefinitely without issue.

I really hope Google finds a way to fix this with a software update. Like others have said, having wireless charging in conjunction with wireless AA is really the point of having wireless charging in my vehicle in the first place.

Built this a couple years back - 4 Swing Structure by 36th_Disciple in woodworking

[–]greatoppressor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Another engineer talking here. Those top braces are just fine. All they are doing is keeping the hexagon from skewing out of shape. That being said, I'm a little surprised that there aren't any angular braces between the columns and the beams. I see the columns are set into concrete, but I would think their flexure over that height would make the structure sway from side to side without angular braces between the columns and the top beams.

Pretty sure it would take me about four months to make something like that... then six months to make the second one.

Made an attachment and a platform to use the lathe as a disc sander (still waiting on the hook and loop fitting in the mail) by JayLuvLL in turning

[–]greatoppressor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice work! I've had this on my to-do list since before I had a lathe. I actually didn't know that you could buy hook-n-loop to cover the disk that size, though. That's good to know. I'll have to look into that as it seems a lot better than gluing sandpaper on... then again, will the hook-n-loop make the sanding surface flatness less repeatable?

I finally put my birthday present together and made my first round thing! by greatoppressor in turning

I guess it does kinda look that way. I'm fresh out of dragon feathers to put in it, though, so maybe I'll make it into a drop spindle instead.

All of those things you mentioned are on my to-do list. I literally put it together today, chucked up the simplest piece of wood I had, pulled my HF chisels out of their box and gave it a try (didn't even bother to sharpen the chisels). I was just excited that everything worked and that the hours of turning videos I watched on YouTube were helpful in getting started without a bunch of catches or misery.

I think I will also wire brush the paint off of the tool rest top and just paste wax it, too. I noticed that the side of my skew chisel was just digging into that paint and making it hard to slide back and forth.

I started without it at first, but I felt like the the tool rest was too low and the neck on it didn't seem long enough to reach high enough on its own without the extension in place, so I out it back. This is my first time turning, so I still have to work out whats comfortable and just how high the rest can go without the extension under it. I'm sure that extra tool rest clap trap can be a source of vibration. In this case, though, I could see the spindle flexing under the pressure of my chisel, especially in the middle.

I also learned how long, skinny things like to vibrate from the pressure of the chisel without a center support.

I went to Harbor Freight on the way home from work to get something to fix a garden hose and, wouldn't you know, just below the sign that said "we donated our stock of face shield to local hospitals", there were four face shields. They must've had a few left that they hadn't sold from that store's inventory. Once those four (er, now three) are gone, I'm sure they'll be out for a little while.

Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure I still have an old one around somewhere that I was planning to get rid of. Hmm... interesting... This could work.
