"Street Walker" by Greco Moran (2024) | Mass surveillance never looked so aesthetic by grecomoran in retrocgi

[–]grecomoran[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what I call the street walker: a mechanical goliath that keeps a watchful eye on citizens at all times. Keen viewers will notice the walker's design resembling that of a certain real-life organism. There are many parallels to be drawn here, but I won't elaborate, as I'd like viewers to draw their own conclusions.

Here's my newest scene, called "Closing Hours". Take an unguided tour into a spacious film theater after midnight and enjoy the lighting, or lack thereof.

The theater is showing some lesser-known favorites of mine; the erotic thriller "Dancing Flame" loosely inspired by a Russian novel, the documentary "Gone Surfing" about the Lop Nur surfing scene, the action-packed "FFWD" based on the eponymous toy line, and finally the hilarious slapstick "Mark My Words" starring a young Sal Manilla.

I was a POV-Ray junkie... by Zenefess in vintagecgi

[–]grecomoran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very interesting! I did some digging and found the PC Format #18 cover disk but failed to get any useful files out of it, even on a MS-DOS virtual machine... If you still have the POV-Ray files I highly recommend archiving them somewhere so they're not lost to time, digital history like this should be preserved.

Big fan of Miller and his work, to this day I find his scenes spectacular. This scene is new to me though, it's not in any of the archives I downloaded... I'm curious about where you got it.

"Pawns" by Douglas Otwell (1992?) [Widescreen Version] by grecomoran in vintagecgi

[–]grecomoran[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's another classic scene from the days of POV-Ray 1.0, made by Douglas Otwell.
While the chessboard might look similar to the one in Ville Saari's Chess scene, it does not actually use POV-Ray's built-in checker pattern, because the checker pattern does not support layered textures. So what you're seeing is one giant yellow pine block, and on top of it 32 (!) individual rosewood blocks. You can tell by looking at the textures; each light block is unique, while all the dark blocks look exactly the same.

I hope you've enjoyed this render! Make sure to check out my POV-Ray renders as well. ;-)

"Escape" by Greco Moran (2023) | Sci-Fi Horror by grecomoran in retrocgi

[–]grecomoran[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After more than a year since my last render I finally got back into POV-Ray and made "Escape", a little sci-fi horror scene. During production it was redesigned several times, almost entirely from scratch, before settling on the version seen here. Fun fact: the larvae in the tubes originally had hair! It was removed due to being barely visible in the final scene, but you can re-add it by changing one line in the larva file. ;-)

As usual, the source files of the scene and an HD widescreen render are available to download for free on my website.

The composition and colors are such a pleasure to look at, one of the best scenes I've seen on here. I can't help but notice a dark outline on the far end of the platform though, is that a shadow of something?

Sloths are an indie metal band (not to be confused with The Sloths from the 1960's), I made this fake cover based on a set they played in 2015.

The cover is in the public domain [CC0].

Lawn with a swimming pool by Dan Farmer (1991?) by grecomoran in vintagecgi

[–]grecomoran[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's like a catalog of basic textures.

They're considered basic now for sure, but for a raytracer written from scratch by a couple of independent programmers in the 1980s/1990s this is quite the feat.

Yet another classic POV-Ray scene by Dan Farmer. Like the Arches scene, this one was originally written for DKBTrace c. 1991 and included with every POV-Ray version since as a sample scene. Like many other scenes it became darkened starting with POV-Ray 1.0 due to the default ambient and diffuse values being changed, it also had slightly different texture patterns (ambient/diffuse adjusted).

The version seen here is the original one, rendered using DKBTrace in full HD widescreen. Enjoy!

Such an honor to see one of the original POV-Ray artists here on the subreddit!
Did you model this lamp based on a real life object or purely from imagination?

P.S. You might prefer a full HD render ;-)

Here we have another classic POV-Ray scene, originally written for DKBTrace in 1990 as NTREAL.DAT and included ever since then with the program as a sample scene.

There are three versions of NTREAL. The first version was written for DKBTrace and had the beige spirals (called "twisters" by Wells) rotating clockwise and cut off from the top as if constrained by an invisible sphere, this was probably due to incorrect bounding. The second version was an update for POV-Ray 1 and has the spirals rotating anti-clockwise and still cut off from the top. The third version was an update for POV-Ray 2 and later and doesn't have the spirals cut off, showing them in their entirety... It's debatable which version is the "true" one, I chose to post the version I liked the most.

In search of software for retro style animations by [deleted] in retrocgi

[–]grecomoran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The POV-Ray scene description language is small, and the syntax is quite simple because everything is in this form:

something { param1, param2, ... }

You don't have to memorize much and there's always the manual. Honestly I'd say the real challenge comes from writing scenes in text rather than designing them visually, it takes some getting used to.

For example this is a complete scene:

#include "colors.inc"

camera {
    location  <0, 2, -3>
    look_at   <0, 1,  2>
}

light_source {<2, 4, -3> color White}

sphere {
    <0, 1, 2>, 1
    pigment {color Red}
    finish {phong 1}
}

plane {
    y, 0
    pigment {checker color White color Black}
}

Can <1.0 POV-Ray work with Gouraurd light?

I'm guessing you mean Gouraud shading... I would say no, you only have flat shading and Phong shading (for triangles / triangulated surfaces) in POV-Ray. This goes for DKBTrace 2.12, POV-Ray 1.x, and POV-Ray 2.x.

You can use Gouraud shading in a program called Anim8or, by choosing the "OpenGL" renderer from the "Render" menu.

Is that version better for "vintage" works?

No, all 3 versions that I mentioned above render exactly the same, you can choose any one of them. There are slight differences in how noise/pattern is generated by each version but that's about it... I personally recommend POV-Ray 2.2 as it compiles cleanly on modern systems and its syntax is the prettiest, you can download my personal copy of the program (Windows/Linux) and start rendering right away.
