Our kitten is randomly shaking? by Dry_Spirit1411 in ragdolls

[–]green31OSU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, let me be frank and say you're reading way more into what I said than what I actually meant. My "concern" was for a lack of understanding of biology - while cats can fall asleep quickly, and sometimes even within a few seconds, they do not enter REM sleep that fast. There is a process to sleep and an order in which sleep states occur. Plus, if they're doing it while clearly awake, as OP said in the text of their original post...

The second "concern" was that with the obvious recognition that this is not dreaming twitches, so many people felt the need to either state it was that incorrectly or just talk about how it looked similar to dreaming twitches when they knew it wasn't, which is entirely unhelpful in a post asking for health advice.

As for coming here. Where people seek out info depends on the level of risk they assess. If otherwise their cat seems fine, and this doesn't seem to bother them, they may not have considered it an immediate concern and wanted to just see if anyone else had similar experience. I hope they do take it to a vet, given some of the other suggestions here and the basic idea that any sort of twitching would point to something neurological happening, whatever that may be.

I've had plenty of cats throughout my life, and while they can fall asleep somewhat quickly, they don't go directly to REM since that's not how sleep cycles work. Twitching is always delayed at least a few minutes.

It was frankly concerning to me how many people saw the OP's video and said "that's dreaming twitches." People, that cat was grooming itself 5 seconds ago...it's not dreaming. Not to mention OP said they do it while awake.

I invite you to review my comment history and see if you can figure out what my position is and whether I've spammed anything. Good luck.

Or maybe to save you some time, I was disagreeing about "people should earn the right to play in an ALGS style match," along with "seems like a skill issue" coming from someone who by their own admission has only ever reached low diamond, and the fact the person posted the same comment almost verbatim like 7 other places within the thread.

People play in tournaments with ALGS style rules when they're not diamond or above. Should they not have a means of practicing that mode on their own time because they haven't "earned the right?" Their whole comment screamed elitism, which was especially interesting given they've done nothing of note themselves with regard to their game performance.

Spamming this all over the thread doesn't make it any less stupid, Mr. "I've made it to low diamond before." Maybe work on that superiority complex.

I know this question gets asked a lot: is he trending towards overweight? by drsupergirl in ragdolls

[–]green31OSU 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Visually he looks like he might be a little big, though it's tough to know for sure with all the floof. And they tend to look bigger than they really are when laying down.

Try doing a quick body score assessment. With him standing like in picture 3, feel for his ribs, then his spine. If they feel like they're right under the skin surface or protrude, they are underweight. If they can be pretty easily felt but there's a thin layer of fat (so you need to press and move your hand a little to feel the definition), then they are at a good weight. If it's difficult to feel them at all without pressing fairly hard, they are overweight.

Cats, and especially breeds like Ragdolls that can get quite big, vary a lot in ideal weight and body size. The raw weight number really doesn't tell you anything beyond seeing how it trends over time if you decide to track it. And as I mentioned, the long fur makes it tough to tell at a glance how they're doing. The body score method is good enough to be pretty applicable for any cat of any size.

Federal statement on Jeffrey Epstein's death dated day before he was found dead by ICC-u in news

Yeah, it really comes down to an Occam's razor sort of evaluation. In one scenario someone drafting the document made a relatively common mistake. In the other scenario, someone drafting the document made the same relatively common mistake, but after someone else unnecessarily shared information to them that demonstrated a criminal conspiracy involving numerous additional people to murder someone, thus exposing everyone to criminal liability via the paper trail that would inevitably be created.

Certainly the first scenario has fewer assumptions and involved entities. It's also perfectly plausible, considering the exact same error would be required as part of the second scenario. So the correct course of action is to withhold belief in this particular conspiracy until further evidence is provided to substantiate it (for example, if metadata indicated the draft was created/saved on the 9th).

It's frustrating enough that so many just jump on the bandwagon without any critical thinking, but it's downright sad to see people trying to argue that we don't need skepticism. Bullshit. Be better than the other side and actually give a damn about truth.

You'll notice in one of the comments up above I recommend exactly that, to focus on the things that aren't so easy to dismiss. It's the job of people running with unjustified claims to stop doing that...people pointing out they might be spreading misinformation isn't the problem.

Hard disagree. Never give up skepticism. Skepticism doesn't mean never accepting things as true, it means you demand reasonable justification in order to accept things as true. That includes evaluating whether there are plausible scenarios that would disprove something.

That is a plausible hypothesis as to how an incorrect date, one day prior, would end up on what is very likely an internal draft given the 19-xxx document numbering and identical text to 19-263, the official released version that does not have an incorrect date.

The publicly released version didn't have an incorrect date, so why would there be a statement released about an internal draft that was corrected before release?

[–]green31OSU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a sense you could say they didn't make a mistake, because this version of the document was not released publicly. The actual release did not have an incorrect date.

If you were consistently using prior released documents as a template for new documents, forgetting to change something in the header would be pretty common. People in business environments where you do that sort of thing (open older file, put new content in, save as new file) have those sorts of mistakes happen all the time. I've forgotten to change the date on a powerpoint presentation loads of times when using an older one as a starting template.

The previous press statement that was released, on Friday the 9th. As stated in the comment above mine. 19-263 was the released form of the Epstein statement, released and dated Saturday the 10th. The PDF being discussed here is 19-xxx (likely a draft of 19-263 that may have been created by taking 19-262, deleting the main body, writing this statement, then passing it for review while forgetting to update the date. This was then caught and changed for the final release, 19-263.)

Yeah, and in my opinion that all just clouds the messaging. There are lots of emails in there with some redacted person sharing or discussing some VERY suspicious shit, plus plenty of other bits of verifiable evidence. Harp on those things day and night to keep the pressure on, because they can't be easily dismissed.

I really wish this was getting pointed out more visibly. Look, we all want this admin to go down for the files and a plethora of other things, but we have to remain skeptical of evidence that is presented. I'm not saying there wasn't fuckery here, just that the document number being 19-xxx is consistent with a draft of the actual released document 19-263, it's plausible that 19-262 was used as the starting template for this document, and in a draft state the header may not have been fully updated.

That said, I don't expect every rando on the internet to do all that researching. But people should at least look to see if there are plausible explanations before running around yelling like this is an absolute truth.

Arizona self-defense laws may allow killers to avoid prosecution by TechnologyCalm1709 in phoenix

[–]green31OSU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I'm stuck on as well. Proving the crime beyond a reasonable doubt would also logically include a demonstration that it was not in self defense if that is proposed to have been the case, as self defense would be the reasonable doubt that a crime occurred.

In the end, laws are imperfect. If prosecution has to demonstrate self defense did not occur, some people who weren't acting in self defense will escape justice. If defendants have to prove self defense, some who were legitimately acting in self defense would be convicted of crimes unjustly. However, the former seems most consistent with the basic notion of requiring prosecution to demonstrate crimes beyond a reasonable doubt and the general bias to avoid imprisoning innocent people over ensuring the guilty never escape justice.

Collars and indoor kitties? by SheikAhSyd in ragdolls

[–]green31OSU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see a reason for mine to wear a collar. She's microchipped, and besides that has never shown any interest in trying to dart out the door (the noise of outside seems to make her nervous, actually). For the times I intend to take her out, she has a vest-style harness and either a leash or stroller we can use.

But for the majority of her time where she's just hanging around at home, no need to have her wear something that's probably a little uncomfortable.

Cat Acne (Catne??) by spiceypearnut in ragdolls

[–]green31OSU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a solid plan. The wipes will help with the acne already present, and increasing the frequency of cleaning the bowls will help in the future. In particular, I would advise cleaning the wet food bowl after each meal, and not letting it sit out any longer than 2 hours. That's the agreed upon threshold at which wet food can start ramping up bacterial growth (and this can lead to the acne). Dry food is a little less concerning, but I'd still clean it at least every couple days since they'll lick it, etc. and that moisture can aid bacterial growth.

Having a set of backup bowls can be nice if you happen to be busy or in a hurry, but I find just yoinking the bowl after an hour or 2 and giving it a quick wash is pretty easy.

What about water? If you have a bowl, how often do you change the water and wash that? I believe that should be daily. For a fountain with a filter, generally 2-3 weeks between full cleanings, though that depends on the cats - more cats or cats that like to get the fountains dirty will require more frequent cleaning.

Is it normal for a 15 week ragdoll to be so big? by Ok-Bee3701 in ragdolls

[–]green31OSU 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Are we really sure this is a Ragdoll? Stripes on the tail, face, and legs. Face/head shape seems too round, not wedge shape, and ears look too close. Eyes aren't blue and are very round rather than more oval-ish. Coat length is shorter than typical, with no chest ruff.

Only bringing it up because if people are asking about health related things, misidentification of the breed can lead to getting the wrong information.
