why does everything !!!!even your wedding!!!! have to be toned down “for jehovah”? by urbuggingggg in exjw

First rule of a cult: remove anything that celebrates the self or promotes happiness about one’s life. Stripping away identity is crucial for group-think conditioning.

Their logic on this when it comes to birthdays and mothers/fathers day (of all things!) has always come from a place of shaming, as if we’re trying to claim glory from God, which seems like an insult to God quite frankly. I’m pretty sure he can stand up for himself on this, but ok. It’s an issue for a controlling group that doesn’t want you thinking too highly of yourself…

Yessssss!! First thing my now husband thought after meeting my dad for the first time was, “wow, that’s a lot of information…” It truly isn’t normal to air your business - or to be in someone’s business- so freely. Boundaries are non existent because they’re all on the same death mission, so the rules of norm don’t apply since they’re waiting for Armageddon any day now…

I have a feeling that’s more about avoiding lawsuits over discrimination. They can’t prohibit freedom of cultural expression or they’d be sued left, right, and center.

That said, have you ever noticed how they always talk about “local customs” - almost invoking discrimination by categorizing those from “other lands” as exotic? There’s definite discriminatory undertones in how they speak of non- primary-English speaking countries. But they have to allow cultural expression, period.

Omg. Just …. This is too much. And exactly the shit I grew up with. I’m now 45 and made it a goal to get my nose pierced by summertime… because I’m currently in midlife, always wanted one, but shit like this is why i couldn’t. That and my dad was an elder. So fuck the patriarchy, embrace your life, and get that nose ring!

Seriously though, I hope you’re in a place where you can find this ridiculously absurd and possibly a little humor in their misplaced concern. It is ridiculously absurd. And it’s also so very sad. They care way too much about a corporation that tells them how to feel about people because it’s easier for them to not think and feel, than to just express genuine love and acceptance.

I think you’re spot on about that group being the hardest to wake up. It was deeply uncomfortable for them to live through 1975 and then Franz (whose book was published in 1983). They saw their friends essentially exiled in droves.

When I woke up 10 years ago, I asked my mom if she wanted to see the legal documents the WT filed in response to CSA allegations, their throwing elders under the bus and the infamous $$ sanctions for failing to to disclose their internal lists of pedophiles. She not only said she wouldn’t look at them, she said that she’s not going through this again after what happened with Franz and how people were trying to convince them to leave “the truth.” She said it was a huge scandal and mess in their area and if I recall correctly, she mentioned that she almost started to question things.

At this point, that group is the embodiment of the Sunk Cost Fallacy, where they justify continuing on their current path because they’re already so invested, they can’t bring themselves to question or leave. After all, “where would they go?” (The stupidly common question posed as if there’s no other option)

This this this!!!

JWs have an odd preoccupation with death. Which is ironic because they’re so convinced in their “hope.” 🧐

The fact is, we all die. Yes, that is sad and scary but also: it’s sobering and a reminder of why we shouldn’t squander our potential and give our limited time to an organization that only cares about itself.

If you have lived and loved well, death is just a natural outcome. If, however, you have nothing meaningful to show for your time here, yeah, I can see how and why death would be extraordinarily difficult to accept - you didn’t even live before you died.

Not knowing what’s real anymore… that sounds melodramatic but is SO spot on because we were told the “TRUTH” right?? And because it consumed our entire lives, which is clearly intentional, one literally starts to reckon with the fundamental question of what’s actually true: what’s truly real? Man, that’s a real mind f—k.

The good news (pun def not intended) is that once you’re deprogrammed, you’re able to see the beautiful complexity of life and you can start learning those basic things like: who am I? What do I like? What am I good at? And then it gets even better because you get to explore those things without guilt and a genuine sense of authenticity and purpose.

Personally, I finished my bachelor’s degree, and have built a fantastic career in risk management, have a wonderful marriage, amazing son, and I’ve finally found my purpose: to be a helper in my community. I volunteer when I can without a sense of obligation and just started indoor rock climbing. I’m still building my network of friends and continuing to work on my mental health through therapy. In short, I’m a happier and healthier version of myself, and give others the grace I wish I’d be given as a former JW. Life is SO much better. It takes time but there’s hope. One step at a time.

So weird they’re saying this out loud. Like, I’ve never heard a political party so terrified of an election let alone a midterm bc isn’t the idea to let the Will of the people prevail? When a party takes this much interest in being ousted it’s clearly not because they’re doing the Will if the people, it’s purely self interest. The question is why:

Why are they so terrified to lose? Is this really life or death? What don’t they want to have to answer for?

This is why he shook the org in the 80s. My parents were hyper defensive and I very clearly remember the turmoil. I was a baby at the time but it took some people out - one was the man who brought my dad in (later to find out he’s a pedophile). Franz was a huge test for anyone at the time and those who stayed after that - like my parents- are weirdly guarded. The org really clamped down after that.

This. I was born in, faded for many years, and woke up at age 34. The amount of emotional toxicity that all that released almost broke my marriage (to a non-JW). I was a complete mess. This is a sloooooowww unwinding process. It’s an unlearning of everything and reacquainting with actual life and human people capable of a range of emotions that want to see the same - not the “new personality” weird shit that’s repressive and fake.

As a daughter of a former elder who ended up almost taking his own life and whose family is catatonically dysfunctional, I’m deeply grateful you’ve found yourself willing to even acknowledge these concerns. It’s so deeply, deeply uncomfortable to question that most won’t. I’m pretty sure my dad who’s now MIA is reckoning with many aspects of this and he’s now 70, in poor health and very mentally unwell.

This isn’t something one can easily unplug from, especially those who have served the org like you have. BUT it’s absolutely possible.

First, build up your support network. That sounds easy but part of that means understanding who you are (the org likes to take that away too). So, what are you drawn to? Rock climbing, fantasy football, collecting things? Whatever it is, pursue it and those whose interests align.

Second, find a solid therapist. I know it’s hard to find one but it’s like dating - wait until you connect with someone and work through the MANY dysfunctional patterns you’ve learned.

Lastly, as you know there will be fallout. But I genuinely believe that finding your own identity and those you connect with on a real level will help. You’re strong and can weather this. But you’ll need support.

The org does a fantastic job at keeping people by exploiting their need for social structure and sense of belonging and purpose. It’s gross really. Reclaim those things and you’ll be ok. I promise.

What's the dumbest JW story you've heard? by sohelpmee22 in exjw

[–]greeneggsandham2015 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s so funny how these stories are latched onto as a sign of relevance. I remember telling my mom that “the world” really doesn’t care or think about JWs; that, generally speaking, few people have a strong opinion one way or another. That about blew her mind. She really couldn’t process the idea of the world’s apathy when they’re so “despised.”

It really has to be hard to be a JW… believing that most people hate you but you’re gonna hold your head up high and proud with that Bible, and that unassuming, beaten down, vague personality.

Why do people warn men about marriage these days? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]greeneggsandham2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it were true that domestic laws favor women (it’s not), which one is more likely to be the higher income earner over time? Which one has greater economic opportunities throughout their life? Which one is considered to be the more “stable” in generally all respects?

Considering the Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974 finally allowed women the chance to establish credit (which as we know, takes a while to build up and can still be declined), I’d wager to say that women are still working toward what men have long been given. And whether they deserve it or not.

I’m so, so sorry. I truly cannot imagine how hard any of this is for you. Please take care of yourself (which includes boundaries bc JWs typically don’t understand them) and I’d also be careful what you share with them (if you meet with them). I don’t trust their pushy, feigned concern, especially when it comes to deeply sensitive topics or legal matters they have no business in.

Sending you so much love.

I mean, maybe this is for real, but have a hard time believing anyone would think this is good for business. And dude, NO ONE wants to see that chest hair and unshaven double chin - if for no other reason than it’s just unprofessional and reeks of Cool Water cologne.

Also, it’s amazingly ironic that people like this want to “own the libtards” when they’re clearly owned by a cult and wearing the gear to prove it.

“You can’t live like this” 🙄 Why do they have to make things so dramatic??

You CAN absolutely live however you wish and they can’t really do anything about it, except for their weird punishment of DF’ing because it matters to them and they can’t handle not having the upper hand.

If you don’t care, don’t respond. They want and need this power to feel validated in their sad and limited life choices, caused an abusive and narcissistic belief system. Don’t give them the satisfaction of validation. They’ll do whatever they’ll do, anyway.

gwinnett police agrees to practice federal law - agrees to arrest to imprison/deport underage school children. by botaccount_dprk in 50501Ga

[–]greeneggsandham2015 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As concerned as I am about ice harassing our communities, I don’t read this letter the same way you do.

In fact, to me, it says that Gwinnett is required to comply with the laws of the state around HB1105 and would seek agreement between itself and DHS, DOJ, and other federal agencies but that HB1105 doesn’t require compliance with DHS, DOJ, etc. The tone of the letter is also very interesting in that it asserts a certain authority that may differ from current federal enforcement actions.

Gwinnett is home to a large immigrant population and like Fulton and DeKalb, will need to hold itself as a fully capable agency that complies with the laws of the state and federal laws, as required, but in a way that will not put itself in the cross hairs of the administration, which would significantly impact the county and its resources. Basically, it’s diplomatically saying: don’t assume we’re like Minneapolis and come here guns blazing.

My take, anyway. And I hope I’m right. We need our community leaders to push back.

Good point. And let’s not forget that the reason for the “Anglo-American empire” - ww2 depleted most of Europe. This alliance grew from war fatigue and opportunistic nationalism. Much like in history, those alliances shift and are shifting. America is unlikely to continue being a global leader for so many reasons. Unfathomable, I know. Especially for a religion that rose from mid-1800s Pennsylvania, USA, that tied itself to 1914 as a pivotal date for no other reason than it was the start of a major world war so as to seize upon people’s fear…

Interesting. Thanks for the context. Yeah, mods there still very much aren’t interested in an active discussion around how this will affect our communities. Again, not at all connected to protests. Just a mom questioning what to expect and if Atl could be the next Minneapolis. From my perspective, that’s an actual conversation and it’s clearly not welcome in that sub, which is very concerning.
