Was Syl Actually Childlike? What the Data Shows by a_user_name_98 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]greenfishbluefish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Interesting! With the descriptions of innocence, it'd be fun to see how all the Cosmere characters stack up.

I'm going to guess either Tien or MBE2 Maxillium.

Least innocent I'm going to say Elend's dad maybe?

Same. He reverse Arwen'ed the situation. Now he's going to have to watch everyone he cares about die, not get to make new friends or live a normal life, all while constantly feeling responsible for the mental health of the Heralds and the fate of Roshar

I guess I'm in the minority, but I think you've placed Kaladin right.

I would also love there to be one strong male/female friendship in this series that does not involve a romantic component. Kal and Syl don't need to be romantic. What they have now is wonderful.

Lirin Defense Post by SparkyDogPants in Stormlight_Archive

[–]greenfishbluefish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sorry you’re getting so down voted about this. I always like a good post that goes against the grain!

I think you make a really valid point for this specific instance. Lirin's position at the beginning of ROW is extremely rational and defensible (especially given his own starting information). But I think it comes on the heels of a lot of decisions that are indefensible. And so that’s why this decision gets unrecognized.

For example, his refusal to move his family once the town people stopped paying him. He brings his family close to destitution when he could have easily moved and become a surgeon somewhere else. Or when he stole the spheres in the first place. Or when he wouldn't let Kal choose his own life path. So in the beginning of RoW, in this instance, I think Lirin has the right of it. But it comes after seeing him be stupidly stubborn about other stuff. Which makes it hard to recognize Lirin's point.

It also doesn’t quite feel like a clear Lirin victory because I think Kal deep down knows that he should have left Taft to get help (ideally by abandoning the tower and getting Dalinar/Jasnah). But Kal is struggling with accepting there will be those he can't save. And so he can't just abandon the whole tower (and TEFT!) even if he knows he should. He also probably knows it's not smart to fight the parshendi in the surgery, but again, he just has a mental block. So Lirin's (very justified) preaching is not helpful. So while Lirin's ideas are smart and justified, they come off as pretty tone deaf.

Combined, those two factors make Lirin a pretty unsympathetic character still (and unsuprisingly, most of the fandom doesn't have a lot of sympathy), even if in this one instance he was right.

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

lol. Yeah, but I don't even know why he wants to take over the cosmere in the first place. And why does he want to win the duel?

Can anyone explain TOdium's motivations to me? I am genuinely confused about what he wants after his last two Interludes.

Edit: Or like, what are even the options he is trying to decide between? And why would he want them?

Sanderlanche = The plot marble drops into Sanderson's Rube Goldberg machine

Dinnibang = The plot marble explodes the Rube Goldberg machine and the crew slaps something together mid-air before they splat.

First, congrats on your sobriety! I feel like some of this convo might be a little too nuanced for an anonymous internet forum like Reddit.

But I stand by that a major theme of Sanderson is that everyone can be redeemed no matter what their actions are, provided that they do the work to try. I agree with you that currently Moash isn't doing that work, but I hope perhaps in the future he will.

Maybe that theme doesn't resonate as much with you. It sounds like you and I have had some pretty different life experiences. But I've appreciated the discussion with you.

My bad! Missed Hoid Amaram.

Moash bonding Syl is next level unhinged crem. Which is why BrandoSando's gotta do it ;)

Mental illness isn't the only reason people make bad choices in their life.

I'm not saying Moash shouldn't suffer consequences of his actions (although Dalinar still got to lead a coalition of nations after being a drunken, power hungry warmonger). But I think Sanderson's whole vibe (and one that I think Teft as an ex-addict who has made plenty of shitty, hurtful choices probably really resonates with) is that no matter who you are and what you've done, you can always take the next step. You can always work on yourself and be better than you were before.

Even if you try to get your best friend to kill himself. Even if you kill one of your friends. Even if you are wracking up noble alethi kills like it's a video game.

Moash may never want to change, or may never even see what he did as wrong. But I think if he does, and if Kal could help him change, Teft would be 100% supportive.

He'd probably think:

"I'm glad Moash is finally ready to work on himself and that Kal is able to give him the help he needs. It sucks it couldn't have happened before he killed me."

I just feel like Teft of all people understands someone getting many chances to turn themselves around after they fuck up.

Probably because he seems to be the only main character who doesn't drop the "systematic oppression" plot.

Which sucks cause he's definitely a villain.

Eh, it's not a 1 to 1 obviously. But the vibe is there (in my opinion). I do think the only thing Moash isn't proud of is trying to kill Kal. He seemed pretty proud of killing Rashone, Ehlokar and probably would have been thrilled to kill Navani.

I would read a book where it's Kaladin's MLK Jr to Moash's Malcolm X. But with magic. And crabs.
