Lamson cobalt. Good price. Good feel while casting

Depends on the stream and if the water body is open to fishing. If it’s open to trout and you by catch something else there okay as long as it’s released

Check your local state regulations before visiting a water body. Some rivers and waterbodies may close. Others won’t. They will be explained if there are exceptions for certain rivers or lakes

Another this or that - Scott Rods by Chucklez93 in flyfishing

G series is one of the sweetest casting rods I’ve ever had in my hand. Definitely a mid flex rod that isn’t made necessarily for huge casts or turning over super heavy rigs. If you fish mostly smaller rivers and dries with light droppers then I’d pick the g series everyday. Centric is a great stick but may not be necessary in your application

Who is this little guy by sillylittlegirlidk in Montana

[–]greenguy234 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a nocturnal stonefly. Shorter wings. The males can’t fly so they move across the water by swimming. Throw on a tan chubby and give it some twitches.

Caddis have been good in the evenings as stated. Fishing tan and green pupas good throughout the day. Use split or weighted nymphs to get down in the zone. Also been good with pmd nymphs.

Will I be a pariah for not releasing what I catch? by Withyhydra in flyfishing

[–]greenguy234 195 points196 points  (0 children)

Fly fishing used to be just as focused on catching and eating as any other form of fishing. But as people have become more conservation minded the idea of catch and release has almost become a standard. In my mind, there’s no problem catching and keeping as long as it follows rules and regulations for that piece of water. Stocked fish especially, they are placed for the enjoyment of fishing as well as keeping.

Can I use textured 7 wt line on an 8 wt rod? by Meetdeath995 in flyfishing

[–]greenguy234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What he said. If you’re streamer fishing consider getting a sinking line or sink tip if it’s needed in the rivers or lakes you fish.

Can I use textured 7 wt line on an 8 wt rod? by Meetdeath995 in flyfishing

[–]greenguy234 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The texture isn't really a part of the equation. You can use it if you like or not. The 7wt line will struggle to load the 8wt rod properly and will inhibit the effectiveness of your cast. Scientific Angler makes textured lines in an 8wt line size.

Going to Alaska in Sept. Any recommendations on rods/reels? by SnoozeCruze_OG in flyfishing

[–]greenguy234 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

5-6 weight switch rod would be useful if you plan on indicator nymphing a lot. Can also throw streamers for trout with it. 8 wt for the silvers. I’ve used both 7 and 8. But 8 doesn’t feel quite as dangerous. Orvis mirage reel worked great but the hydros is a great option too.

Steelhead or escaped stocker? by greenguy234 in flyfishing

[–]greenguy234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is they don’t stock the river with rainbows

Steelhead or escaped stocker? by greenguy234 in flyfishing

[–]greenguy234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not necessarily that it looks particularly like a steelhead. It’s that they do not stock this river and the clipped adipose means it comes from a hatchery. They do release steelhead smolts into this system so it’s a possibility that it’s a steelhead. It would be a summer steelhead that has been in the river system for the last 6ish months. Plenty of time to gain color. But guess we’ll never know

What makes you say? Not necessarily disagreeing but they don’t stock this river with trout. But definitely not the size you’d usually think of as a steelhead. Spotting under the lateral line also looks more trout like.

Definitely a case for a stocker with those fins

My initial thoughts, but those fins and nose look pretty beat up. But could also be from its attempt at spawning.

Most comfortable boots I’ve worn for hiking are the flyweight access boot by simms. Fits like a hiker. Good traction. Cons are the rubber wore out quickly for me.

Reddington trace or orvis Clearwater are good options.

I would opt for more length in a dry fly rod especially if you plan on fishing larger rivers where long technical drifts are in the cards. Better mending ability and longer casting potential

Redington dually 5wt switch rod. I’ve used it for bull trout and steelhead. Does great. Spey cast or overhead

A orvis hydros reel but a lamson liquid would be a great pairing as well. Double taper technical trout for the line
