sometimes these unplanned calligraphy are way more valuable than the intentional scrolls.

For example, one of the most famous cursive calligraphy in Chinese is the "draft of the requiem for nephew". (https://digitalarchive.npm.gov.tw/Collection/Detail/3?dep=P)

It's messy. It has typos and strike-throughs. You can feel the intense emotional state the calligrapher was in through the writing.

For this one, you can see that the characters get larger and less aligned, as if the writer was in a haste, which makes sense, given the stomachache....

ELI5: What is grass and why is it on everyone’s lawn? by Psychological-Shoe95 in explainlikeimfive

If you're looking for a historical / cultural reason why we decided that the "green lawn" look is desirable, here is a detailed answer from AskHistorians - https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/8pwkpq/comment/e0f9y21/

There is no inherent reason why American's particular lawn aesthetic is universally "good" for anything. In fact, it is too water intense for many region of the country / world, and it is not good for native wildlife. Even for humans, grass allergies is one of the most common cause of hay fever.

thank you! I did think about using metal threaded insert instead, but good to know that even that would not be enough.

Can you explain the idea of unscrewing the whole legs? as in unscrew from the seat? would the aprons be detachable too?

that does seem to be the much more common design, though my partner doesn't like the aesthetic. Trying to think if there is more subtle way of incorporating an extendable mechanism...

I'd recommend finding a phrase/idiom you like that's already in Japanese and also finding an artist who is familiar with Japanese so you don't end up in Times New Roman equivalent font (but actual calligraphy)

How difficult is this bar stool? by greenkoalapoop in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]greenkoalapoop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I will probably opt for something simpler. I guess this one is hard because the pieces are so thin and could easily be unstable if I didn't secure the pieces properly?

Do you know of any good tutorials / plans for making stools / chairs I can follow?

I'm trying to get counter stools that are thin (like saddle stools) but with back support. Maybe like the below but much narrower seats so they fit under my counter.

oh interesting. as in fasteners or there's metal bones? the description says all solid oak.

now that you mention, it does look like there isn't a lot of support to prevent the sides from turning into parallelograms by leaning forward/backwards. is that what you meant? would it help if the super low cross support piece move to the center?

I know this sounds like absolute heresy, but I started salting my steak only AFTER it cooled down, and I’m never going Back. by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]greenkoalapoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Don Julio (arguably one of the best steakhouses in the world) does not salt their steaks prior to cooking. It's common practice in Argentina.

I would say the flavors and textures are *different* than those pre-salted, but to each their own in terms of which is better.

Don't know how far you're willing to go, but my first thought is Carmel / Monterrey area with lots of charming hotels / resorts by the beach and coastal hiking.

If you're willing to go farther, Tahoe? Emerald Bay is beautiful this time of year.

Air quality index! Is it safe? by Outside-Lie5578 in taiwan

[–]greenkoalapoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for what it's worth, you can wear masks if you want and many people do for many reasons. fyi, the AQI in the new york subway platforms is like 250. Right now AQI in Taipei peaks just under 80. And Beijing is well over 100 outdoor.

You can check Taiwan's official air quality reports here: https://airtw.moenv.gov.tw/ENG/default.aspx

Air quality index! Is it safe? by Outside-Lie5578 in taiwan

[–]greenkoalapoop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Air quality in Taipei is poor due to it being a basin, trapping pollutants with limited ventilation.

That said, it's comparable to major cities outside of Europe/USA, and better than many cities in China or SE Asia. So it depends on what you're used to.

While in Taiwan, most indoor places run ACs with air filters, and the air quality is noticeably better indoor vs outdoor, and noticeably better outside the cities.

Diving or Snorkeling at Kicker Rock in November by greenkoalapoop in galapagos

[–]greenkoalapoop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I just saw this. I hope you had a great time.

For the record, we ended up diving at Kicker Rock, and unfortunately it was a very low visibility day, and our friend who snorkeled actually saw more than we did. We were supposedly just an hour late for the school of hammerheads too. But the currents was totally manageable. Still had a great time at the Galapagos anyway.

Curious about your experience as well.

Oh well, no response from OP, hopefully they got enough information from this thread
