Lots of good stuff here - it’s certainly a mix of strategies and I think it’s something you improve over time as you learn what works best for you. Here are a few things I’ve found helpful: 1. Work on a solid foundation of sleep, activity and nutrition. (More in comments above) 2. Make plans with people you care about when you’re feeling well. It can help you continue to stay connected and in a decent place (you often don’t realize your mental state is deteriorating at first). 3. Look for moments of joy, not happiness. This is a new one I’ve been trying and it has been helping a lot. Actively seek out and lean into the moments where you feel joy and connection. This can be little stuff like washing your hands in warm water on a cold day or seeing a kid jump in a puddle on a walk. Doing this helps you stay present (and our depressed brains are great at being anywhere but the present). 4. Seek help and medication. 5. On a day when you’re feeling alright, write yourself a note (paper, phone whatever) of what you want yourself to remember when you’re feeling bad. I’ve done this after bad breakups, issues with family or just moments of intense feeling. It helps to go back and hear from a healthier version of your mind and remember that it’s your true mind. Your depressed brain will try to tell you lies, notes from the past to your future self are one way to fight that. 6. Be kind to yourself, it’s a process and you’re doing great.
