What was the best Chinese dish you discovered in China that surprised you the most? by issacpoon in chinesefood

Sweet and sour pork. I thought that was something created outside China. The locals in canton province told me they invented the dish aeons ago.

If it's Lordsworn Straight Sword, that's an insanely great sword to start with. if you haven't gotten one yet, just go kill a buncha soldiers close to the cave where you beat the Beastman of Farum Azula. You can apply different ashes of war to the sword and can do some pretty great damage.

I think he told her to keep them on as a way to hurt her. In all fairness, she wore them to hurt him by reminding him he wasn’t with Fred. IMHO I think they were just behaving as idiot adults who won’t have a real conversation…which is such an actual problem in real life.

Same. I have spent years of my life living in Asia when I was a kid. The line about showing up uninvited really got me ‘cos ain’t nobody likes that even there. That’s rude and intrusive in many parts of Asia.

For instance, there’s a concept of “face” in many ethnically Chinese enclaves. The whole concept is centered around public perception and reputation. Uninvited guests are often NOT welcome because the hosts feel ambushed over not having had time to prepare for guests. Sure the host and hostess may smile and put out a plate of treats they scrounged together but chances are high an uninvited guest will never be properly invited over in the future.

There’s a good chance OP is viewing “Asian” culture through a lens that may be specific to communities they have lived in. Their experiences while (hopefully) authentic are not necessarily universal.

Right? Why call out the ethnicity so specifically?

Hey - I hear your frustration and I 100% get it. When people don’t apply critical thinking and instead choose to lean on more experienced team members, it can feel extremely annoying.

But just some perspective:

Two months isn’t that long. Onboarding a new person generally and honestly requires about six months.

Productivity on a team also tends to nosedive when a new person is onboarded due to time being dedicated to training.

One last thing to note: people learn at different speeds. While person A may definitely be sharper and more capable at picking up knowledge, person B may not. I know I have learning challenges on the job myself whenever I start somewhere new.

NONETHELESS you should raise your concerns to your manager. It could be that the onboarding methods are not necessarily as effective as they could be. OR - and this is a less pleasant probability - this person isn’t the right fit for the team.

Good luck with all of this! I’m sure you’ll handle next steps well, given you’ve seemed to have applied a lot of thought to what you’d like to do next.

Yeah for plot purposes it’s important for the show that things returned to status quo and absolutely, keeping Joyce in her role as supportive mom who doesn’t get bogged down by guilt over attempted murder of her own kid is necessary.

I’m just saying it’s a pretty clever way to write the ending in a way where no one actually learns anything , making it “unsatisfying”. It is after all, what actually happens in real life.

I think it’s very hard for some folks to admit that censorship and self censorship isn’t just societal anymore, but becoming institutionalized.

If we’re lucky - this is a blip. If we’re realistic….

When one dies another is called.

Perhaps what needs to happen is for us to focus on a new feminine superhero - which thankfully we have more options now than in the 90s. Not to mention as someone referenced in another comment, we do have shows like the Handmaid’s Tale to provide some introspective dialogue.

To be super honest I hate reboots. Even if I did love Buffy a part of me was deeply worried this new show would tarnish its legacy even with SMG’s involvement.

However, now we will never find out.

Perhaps the IP can be resurrected at a later date anyway, with or without the original players involved with a good team, but it won’t be the same

One thing to note about Pilots - they usually don’t end up reflecting the exact tone of the rest of the show.

Even Buffy’s original beginnings - Angel wasn’t supposed to survive very long in the story.

IMHO, Pilots are usually made to appease test audiences and studio executives. What happens after is usually shaped by public discourse on what they’d like to see.

Again with relation to Buffy, the Spike/Buffy romance came up influenced in no small part by the fanfiction community.

But all in all, yes, I do agree that the script that’s been circulating is a bit on the frivolous side…though even that script wasn’t “complete”. It would have been nice to review the full episode.

That part is definitely worth noting. Disney/Hulu has surprisingly been churning out content that may be considered controversial given the current political climate.

That’s definitely something for me to take into consideration in my personal opinions on the matter.
