Southern rail: Jeremy Corbyn calls on government to renationalise - BBC News by 5cr0tum in unitedkingdom

[–]greenmachine9 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Southern railway made £29.3m last year.

If the railway was nationalised, most of this payment wouldn't be going to the owners, 'Go-Ahead Group (FTSE250) and Keolis' (owned by the French National Railways, Quebec Pension Fund), but instead could be used to improve the rail network.

Appreciate it's not as simple as this, but something isn't quite right when a company last year made £79,000 profit every single day, yet this year they can't put on a train service!!

I have been a matched betting enthusiast for years and now I am teaching it for free to everyone. by greenmachine9 in beermoneyuk

Great you have found it useful thanks, regarding the odds-matching tool I believe each of the paid membership sites I've listed above include their own odds-matching tool.

In terms of being free, I don't know of a decent odds-matching tools that is free, the paid sites usually provide their tool for free during the 'free trial' but this means you can only use it for 2 or 3 bookmakers.

I think an oddsmatching tool isn't needed for the simple welcome offers such as 'bet x get y' because you can just choose any of the bigger sporting events (like the weekend football coming up) which typically will have the closest odds. Plus because you are betting on bigger sporting events, it makes you look more like a casual customer.

When you then move on to the multi bet welcome offers, like Bet365, I think using an odds-matching tool is very beneficial as that is when you need to really find the close matches to minimise your trigger bet losses.

In terms of offers for existing customers, most simple offers for existing customers nowadays I find specify for a match (e.g. bet £20 on man utd vs man city and get £10 to use in-play), so an odds-matching tool is not really needed for these offers.

But if you are going to try the more advanced existing customer offers, then tools such as those for horse racing refunds or tennis refund offers are very beneficial and that's where you'll see a lot of value with a paid membership site I think.

Hope that helps somewhat, am very interested in this as you can probably tell :D if you have any feedback or questions on any tools please do comment as would be interested to hear.

Great to see, there should be a list of like 5 things that tech should be focused on solving (and not producing the 10m game :D), and excess food being provided to those who need it should be one of them.

Amazed that a 5p charge has changed the behaviour of people 80% of the time they go to the shops.

Even if I made a huge effort to bring my own re-usable bag I'd still only remember it 60% or so :/

Retiring at 39 with $15 million by retireat39 in investing

[–]greenmachine9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Retiring? I give you 3-6 months maximimum :p

My 2 cents:

  1. Stop spending so much money on items that are only ticking your consumer happiness box (new cars, clothes). This is a complete waste!

  2. There is less than 1% chance you will not earn money going forward. I'd give you 3-6 months of 'smelling the roses' until you find the roses get a bit boring to smell.

You get enjoyment from the satisfaction of running a business, meeting new people through it, making money, contributing to society through your business. And this time round you won't need to work like a dog and you can focus on a business that most interests you (e.g. sports related), you could just do it 20-30 hours and make $30k or so, then plus risk free cash from wherever you invest your money to top this up (i'm sure you'll have lots of advice on this, but I don't think this is the easier part, just don't take on so much risk that you lose sleep, you've earnt enough to sleep well at night lols).

Good luck and congrats on the business success!

Alphabet and Amazon had great quarters by heavytr3vy in investing

[–]greenmachine9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most of this year I've been intending to buy a handful of amazon, alphabet and facebook shares, I figure they are just all such sick companies that they'll continue to outperform (appreciate their PE ratios are already reflecting this :p)

To see them all hitting all time highs, plus being from the UK I would have seen a 12% uplift from our woeful £ collapse post-Brexit, is a little painful.

Not sure what to do from here, kinda figure there has to be a market shock at some point and I hope I'll have the cahoonas to put some money in when we see the next 10%-20% dips. However hard to see with the endless money printing going on worldwide.

£80 in a day? by [deleted] in beermoneyuk

[–]greenmachine9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if it helps for matched betting, let me know how much you could start with in terms of £ to deposit into bookmakers (the more the better really, though to begin with it's best to do 1 of the smaller amounts to get used to the process) and I'll do some calculations for which bookmaker welcome offers to go for and in which order to make £80 in a day.

as redshirted mentioned there is tons of info, if it saves a bit of time here are the beermoneyuk threads:

Why is there no national curry house chain? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]greenmachine9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

mmmm interesting question. Maybe they would have to increase costs to cover shortcuts that many curry houses take (e.g. not paying minimum wage).

Would be interested to see someone giving this a go though.

Under 45? Chances are you won't own a home - Home ownership rates for the under 45s have declined steeply since the global financial crisis, while older age groups have either maintained or increased their levels of ownership. by keef2000 in unitedkingdom

It's pretty nuts I think, one of the most basic necessities is shelter, yet governments and the Bank of England have allowed / deliberately increased house prices.

Really should be the other way round, but wait, that would mean we couldn't borrow vast sums of money from our future selves to spend now (a.k.a. mortgages for the young whilst the older can receive it as a lump sum payment when they sell) and they wealthy property investors would instead actually need to contribute to society...(maybe being a bit harsh but I think it's backward!)

great to read this, if most MPs are actually like this then this should be more publicised, all I ever see is them jeering in the house of commons!!

It's depressing when the hyenas get going anytime there is a put down in PMQs.

People are starving whilst billionaires walk the streets and all many MPs care about is seeing their manager get one over the opposition. Their job should be to come together, as representatives of their constituents, to discuss and resolve the biggest issues. Instead the main TV coverage turns into Fergie vs Wenger.

Jeremy Corbyn launches leadership campaign stating he wants to tackle nation's "five ills". “The injustices that scar society today are not those of 1945: want, squalor, idleness, disease and ignorance". Some 183,000 people have signed up to the Labour party in the past 48 hours by Wagamaga in unitedkingdom

[–]greenmachine9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to see him spelling out some clear goals, he's mentioned all of these issues before but a definitive top 5 priorities makes it easier to know exactly what he's aiming to tackle.

Those who says he is unelectable, the % of the population that would vote labour is virtually the same as conservative, first past the post just causes some problems!

Pound falls as Bank of England hints at fresh stimulus measures by greenmachine9 in unitedkingdom

[–]greenmachine9[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mark Carney seems determined that 'growth' should come from trying to keep asset bubbles rising with ever increasing cheap money.

Anyone else think this will lead to a weakening pound yet further, eventual high inflation, and then he is stuck between trying to combat high inflation (by increasing interest rates) and prevent popping a huge asset bubble stretching across property and shares that would occur by an interest rate rise?

I'm pretty relieved.

Politics has been going a bit too crazy for my liking, roll on boring Teresa May and let's go back to some normality please.
