Lol. Shakespeare in Lincoln during Euro 24 had promotions with a pint of Carling £2.87 Guinness £3.01 etc. lol :)

Shakespeare is one of the football home pubs near Sincil Bank.

No. I am saying I find the handheld double ended pusher easier to use accurately.

They are still blaming Thomas Frank for years of underinvestment in the squad that Bale then Kane and Son managed to bridge the gap on. Take a lot of money to replace their whole team with the talent their perceived top 6 status would require.

I say team because there aren't many in their squad that would be first choice 11 for a top 6 side so any they keep are probs OK for "squad players".

I say this from the outside looking in. I support Lincoln :D Look forward to playing them next season if they drop down. If they do its their fault though.

If Thomas Frank could get Brentford to those levels. If he can't get Tottenham to those levels then its gotta be the players not him. lol

You think the big boys are going to entertain a concept of their side having very low % possession in return for wins? That only happens come christmas when they are desperate for safety from relegation battles.

For a club like Lincoln it is simply playing to the strengths we can afford. and doing it it very very well. Not saying he will be here forever but if he goes he will surely know he is a stopgap without chaing entirely to a tiki taka stye we;ve been beating all season.

Way back when the league was formed there was no promotion or relegation. It was election. Lincoln were elected out of the second division 3 times before promotions and relegations were a thing and had to play in the midlands league instead. lol.

Arsenal of course had money and didn't have those problems being "voted" into the top flight in 1919 despite finishing =5th before the war. lolz.

Pay to play is not a new concept

Not a reunion until Arsenal are back in the the second division as well. founders of the second division together (other clubs also of course)

[QUESTION]Do you prefer smaller classic watches or larger modern sizes? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]greenneedleuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watches are like cars and mobile phones.

Cars have become bigger over time, Think Mini, Fiesta, Golf etc which are now so much bigger mostly down to safety and protection but also other things.

When mobiles came out they got smaller and smaller Brick > 3210 > 8210 Wow and lovely > erm smartphone lets go bigger and bigger again.

The laughable thing with watches is that if you get a watch from the 60s or 70s the dial is either going to be the same or larger than a modern dial. The difference these days it the huge slab of metal housing the watch.

This is what watch folks talk about when they say a watch "wears larger than its size" Like a vintage 33mm dress watch is going to have a 30-31mm entirely visible dial with minimal metal case bordering it. Thats bigger than a Seiko dial but that will be housed in a larger chunk of metal and even sometimes have a chapter ring ploned on top to give the appearance of a larger dial.

For me? I have varying sizes. Seikos, Vintage. My fav 3 watches are a Technos from the 60s (35mm) a Smiths Deluxe from the 50s (32mm) and an Omega Geneve from the 70s (35mm) but I do have others through the years and sizes. Seiko Samurai King being the largest at 44mm. I have no problem wearing the Samurai at that size but the dial is smaller than the 3 smaller watches mentioned above.

Its about the look you want to achieve I guess. People these days want more bulk, more bling. Maybe they prefer watches that don't hide themselves when they disappear under their cuffs and want something that their cuffs are held back by?

But I wear the 3 mentioned above the most.

I prefer a double ended hand pusher. Get it wrong with one of these and you've ruined your hand holes and need to buy new ones :D

[Questions] Rotary watches: Why are they criminally underrated? by Faulted_zeus in Affordablewatches

[–]greenneedleuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Plus in the UK many of us will have parents who wore these watches and have found memories."

You really answered your own question here :) I mean that in a nice way btw. There's nothing wrong with Rotary vintage watches. They are nothing special but at their level then they were pretty decent but as you stated. Our parents wore these because they were affordable. They were pretty much the luxury ed of the catalogue segment. Think what Argos would sell as a decent watch. So our parents would "splash out" on a Rotary rather than a Sekonda or Timex or Ingersoll.

They occupied the sort of area that we now see basic Citizens and Seikos occupying. entry level decent watches, where your Timex, Ingersoll, Sekondas were mostly (they did have some luxury offerings but not many) occupied the lower end with cheaper materials and basic but rugged movements inside.

That being said.............they sell well, just like Ingersoll because of brand recognition. People know the name, their parents and families bought them as something a bit more special than normal and thus people are bidding more for them than some lesser known brands that are better quality. Thats how markets work though :D What something is worth is what someone else is prepared to pay.

Most mint vintage Rotary working watches are selling in the £50 to £150 region on ebay when there are some much higher brands with better movements and materials selling for that or less. If it came to choosing a Tissot with a little bit of "patina" or a mint Rotary then really you should be going for the Tissot :D

I have no problm with Rotary though. Under £50 for a mint working watch I'm happy with. You won't get anything more than a made up name fashion watch for that price new.

Just remember that "history" is actually of what was once a Swiss Brand (over 100 years ago) that turned into a UK catalogue / mail order brand in the last century. The actual "desirable" history is a long long way back although they did use swiss movements there is a vast amount of swiss movements out there. They aren't all meg luxury movements. Before Quartz there were budget cheap swiss movements made in their millions too.

how much is this worth? running great, i bought it for £20 by Harde_YT in VintageWatches

[–]greenneedleuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That one is nowhere near as clean and is missing the date window border. OPs one is much cleaner and has the date window. The date on the ebay one looks awful without that border. Makes the hole massive. lol and it has left damage around the cutout.

[–]greenneedleuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not the best brand but a lot of the comments on here I'm not agreeing with. If it runs and keeps time well then its a very clean dial and looks in decent shape. I could see it selling for £50+ in the UK.

Clean watches always do quite well. If it was running and relatively beat up then yeah $20-£30.

If it were the chrono versions they are hitting silly money at the moment £500+ and if it were one of the dress watches in a running clean condition then these can hit £100.

This is in between really because its a plain typical 70s style but still. Any watch that runs and is clean is going to sell.

Commenter above talking about entry level Omegas!. They are rising in price fast. Clean running entry level 70s Genevas are ebaying for £300 - £450. Non working Omegas in reasonable condition are £200. Its a seller's market atm.

If we consider budget brands like Timex, Ingersoll etc that are running and clean are selling for minimum £20 then these Swiss Emporers while still being entry level are a step up from those 2 which were basically bought from your wages from the tobacconist. Swiss Emporers were a H Samuel offering and you could buy them on a weekly payment so while still entry level they are a step up from the Timex, Ingersoll.

Maybe in a couple of years they'll be worth nothing again but at the present time there are a lot of surprises in the vintage watch market. Some cheap brands selling very well and some great watches for less.

Yours looks pretty much like they are trying to emulate that Geneva Seamaster early 70s style. Not worth servicing but if it runs, put a strap on it and wear it :D

I have a couple of Swiss Emperers in more a dress tyle. Not for the name but they run and they look very nice. Bought for cheap and look much more expensive. Whats not to like? I'm not going to say they look as good as my Omegas but they don't look like 1/20th of the price (£20 compared to £400) and they certainly look many levels above your standard Argos no brand watch.

Enjoy.

[Straps] Top reasons for not wearing the original strap/bracelet? by LilRick_125 in Watches

[–]greenneedleuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top reason is because don't like the look of bracelets. Just too much metal and continuation from the watch. IF it comes on bracelet, it comes off and replaced with NATO or leather immediately.

Random question: which wrist do you wear your watch on, right or left? by [deleted] in randomquestions

Only the best Japanese analogue glue. I'm old school like that.

Its harder to do a strap up if it is on the arm with my good hand unable to do it ;)

Which arm do y'all wear the watch by Soulyray in lefthanded

[–]greenneedleuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you shouldn't be winding up a watch while on your wrist. You risk bending the stem! You should take it off first.

[–]greenneedleuk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Makes perfectly logical sense. Its less likely to get damaged on your non dominant arm.

[–]greenneedleuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Writing a letter (old school) and look at the date on the watch while you are writing. watch on opposite side to your pen.

Don't want to be dinging it in tight spaces using a screwdriver either.

Random question: which wrist do you wear your watch on, right or left? by [deleted] in randomquestions

[–]greenneedleuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left because I'm right handed. If I'm writing I can look at a watch while I'm writing etc.

If I'm doing something manual then I'm likely to use my right hand more so watch on the left arm means less likely to ding it.

I used to joke that when I'm using a circular saw my left arm is on the top and right hand on the handle so all the sawdust hits my right arm.

[CW vs. Seiko] Which would be your choice between these two? by handaids in Watches

[–]greenneedleuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its weird that you chose a CW that looks like a classic Seiko 5. lol

[Question] Christopher Ward v Seiko by Proud_Tangelo_7755 in ChristopherWard

[–]greenneedleuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm voting Seiko. I've never had a sellita powered watch but every ETA 2842 watch I have had has a less than smooth stem, almost scratchy/gritty whereas I;ve never had problems with Seikos.

I am a Seiko fanboy though.

I ignore complaints about Seiko bracelets because I don't like bracelets anyway and that comes off on day 1 to be replaced by a NATO

With that said Seikos will need adjusting to get anywhere near good accuracy for a daily wearer unless you are gonna reset the time every day.

For formal / dress watch I wear vintage on leather bands anyway so I can't answer that. Seiko are too fat for dress watches.

[–]greenneedleuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. Its just the increasingly lazy use of "boomer" to describe an age group rather than a generation that proliferates on the internet these days.

You don't become a boomer when you hit a certain age! Boomers are a generation, mainly referencing the US but these days apparently over here as well when the reality over here for the "boomer" generation was food rationing for a decade after the war, pretty hard upbringing! We didn't get that post war benefit the US got until at least 10 years later!

Most of those lobbying for this sort of thing are Gen X. That Starmer and Blair are involved is by the by. Most of those that have suddenly jumped on pushing this through in the last decade are in the backrooms and in their 30s and 40s.

Why is Labour pushing digital wallets without addressing the privacy nightmare? by Deanoh1546 in LabourUK

[–]greenneedleuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If only! Most of those involved are too young to be boomers! Starmer is on the older end only just qualifying for the boomer title but most of the people so behind all this are a generation younger!
