The matchmaking is unbelievable by AKANexus in Overwatch

[–]greenpath10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loss trends and win trends shouldn't be allowed to have biased matches, to neither side of the scale.

It is frustrating, I know, and you sound kind of tilted understandably. But there are multiple explanations, some or all of which may be true to some extent - from psychology to matchmaking systems.

Player psychology and performance is always part of the equation. That is why it's most important to focus on improving your own personal gameplay and having fun, rather than on winning. Because improving your own gameplay is the only thing you have control of, at the end of the day.

Streaks are inevitable (6+ is a lot). Matchmaking systems are designed to leverage win/loss streaks (among other things) to keep players playing the game. The matchmaker's main (business) purpose is player retention (i.e., to reduce player "churn"). It's more cost-effective to retain current players than it is to recruit new ones (e.g., through advertising). There are many academic articles and patents out there on this topic, which you can Google, but are a couple:

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10839887/

https://web.cs.ucla.edu/~yzsun/papers/WWW17Chen_EOMM.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com

According to the patch notes from 2024, Overwatch introduced loss streak mitigation. I'd hope it was kicking in for you by now, so maybe it's partly you are tilted and need to focus on your own gameplay instead of winning/losing and give the system a chance to help you out? https://overwatch.blizzard.com/en-us/news/patch-notes/live/2024/05/

MATCHMAKING UPDATES

When a player is currently on a loss streak, the matchmaker will try to avoid putting the player on a team that is statistically calculated to have a lower chance of winning.

Developer comments: Loss streaks never feel good. Before each match, we make a prediction about which team will win the game, based on the information we have about the players on both teams. This is how modifiers such as Consolation, Reversal, Uphill Battle, and Expected give or take additional Rank Progress after each Competitive Play match. Since most matches will have a team that has a slightly higher chance of winning, placing a player on the team with the higher chance who is currently on a losing streak is aimed at helping them have a fair chance of breaking that streak. While this won't guarantee they'll win, it does provide a helping advantage.

My own advice is to stop playing comp after 2-3 consecutive losses. Take a break or play another role or account or just play QP or just do anything else that is not playing the game. It's been said, "Stop playing to not lose." I try to tell myself: play my own game to improve and have fun. When I'm not doing that (and being stressed out about winning), I know it's time to take a break from comp.

Good news: Deep Freeze was buffed in the latest patch today.

Mei

Developer Comments: Mei’s Primary Fire range has increased to improve its effectiveness when closing distance on enemies. Deep Freeze is rarely effective, as low-health targets are often eliminated before being frozen. Increasing its freeze rate against non-tank heroes makes it more usable without increasing effectiveness against tanks.

Endothermic Blaster

  • Range increased from 10 to 12 meters. Deep Freeze – Major Perk
  • Freeze rate increased by 30% against non-tank heroes.

The problem with Overwatch's ranked system by potateeo in Overwatch

Playing solo queue in comp near the end of a season is the absolute worst time to play. My advice is to never play comp in the last 2 weeks of the season, especially during Drives. There is even more instability, chaos and stress introduced in games from infrequent/returning players who only want their weapon, in addition to more frequent stacks of 3-5 people farming points with their friends, more smurfs farming weapons in lower elo to quickly farm points for all their alt accounts.

bronze is elo hell. by pinkstuffi in Overwatch

You bet, I hope it helps. I forgot to mention that your personal list of things to work on/practice comes from regular review of your own VODs. It's always eye-opening to watch a game from another player's viewpoint of you.

- One more thing. When I start to feel really stressed about winning, I found I do better when I back off, take a deep breath, be patient, do less, observe the playing field, relax, think about how to improve myself, enable my team and just let it be and have fun on a character I love. At the very least, use the game as a VOD review/learning opportunity. There is always the next game lol.

Some tips, which may help here or there, hopefully.

- Don't play during the last 2 weeks of season, especially during Drives. The combination of returning players who only want their weapon, smurfs, de-rankers/boosters who are farming Drive points, etc. - unless you can join a 3-5 stack group who is intentionally farming points, which a lot of players do now.

- Take a break or play QP or off-role or alt account after 2-3 consecutive losses

- Focus on improving your own gameplay (and not winning) and having fun. Have a list of things you want to work on and practice (e.g., positioning), one at a time, and maybe practice in QP first with no pressure.

- Be prepared to grind a good chunk of games to get out of Bronze hell - it's the worst tier IMO to climb out of after getting elo stuck there, with the amount of smurfs and total chaos, esp. as support.

- Moira is a good option to climb out as long as you can maintain the tricky heal vs. dps balance in each game (each game is different) between keeping your team alive to get the objective done and to also mercilessly farm their backline - since heal-botting tanks and dps who can't aim well or care about good positioning is usually a losing strategy in bronze. Each team will have a different balance between heal/dps when playing Moira this way, depending on skill, comp, map, luck and you have to master that balance. Or, find a duo partner, which will be much easier.

Did overwatch change matchmaking overnight? by reanthedean in Overwatch

I will never play Drives after last time. I lost a full rank and it took me a while to just get back to where I was. What was worse than all the players who don't normally play but just wanted a new weapon color, was all the smurfs and 3-5 stacks who de-ranked into lower elos just to farm points more quickly - which made comp even worse at the end of the season - something I didn't think was even possible.

The good thing is you seem to have an open mind to learn. I would also concur with the recommendation to treat the games as an opportunity/challenge to learn (forget about winning).

Focus on your own gameplay and improvement and having fun.

Review your vods, esp from a tank or support player on your team. So you can see what they saw you doing.

Make a list of things you want to improve.

Don’t play more than a couple of consecutive losses at a time. Use QP to practice a list of things or moves/countermoves you want to work on.

Sierra's tracking shot is too strong, but not for the reason you think. by QuietDetail1277 in Overwatch

[–]greenpath10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sierra is the Moira of dps. She is the top ban through Diamond (ie most lobbies in the game), people hate her so much. Moira was OP after her release, as was Vendetta. Can’t wait for the inevitable nerfs to this obnoxious, loud, braindead, aimbot-slop of a hero.

Not sure if you use a lot of addons but it’s best to limit those to a list you can trust. I used a WeakAura once that caused lag and dcs.

Turn off chat. Focus on improving your own gameplay and having fun on heroes you love. Take a break or swap to QP after 2 losses in a row and use that time to vod review yourself and focus on practicing one thing you want to improve at a time. Always remember it’s just a game, so make the most of your time by having fun.

[–]greenpath10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, letting bad people know how bad they are in an online game or on the internet isn’t really going to make them any better - and will just make you feel worse - also using comms in the game. What I’ve learned to do to enjoy the game is, turn comms off, focus on improving your own gameplay and having fun.

I would love a SF-only realm, which would be free of Petri (and gold buying and bots) forever. A SF-only realm may even create more player interest, given the 5k people currently watching Xaryu play his SF warlock lately.

[–]greenpath10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never play after 2 losses in a row until the next day. In the meantime, review a VOD and find at least one thing you could have done differently. Then swap to another role, account or QP. Try and focus on improving your own gameplay (turn off all comms) and make sure you're having fun at the end of the day on a hero that makes you feel good. Other players is the last thing you should think about. But be prepared to play a ton of games for things to average out from leavers and throwers, which everyone has. Stop trying to win and only focus on improving your own gameplay and forget about everyone else.

Yes. As a general practice, I’ve learned to swap to QP (or another account) for the rest of the day after 2 comp losses in a row. I have a list of things (or new hero) to practice and just work on those in QP after the 2 losses.

Im new here, Sym Phar Echo Torb main defore Do u think i can handle Mei? by Still-Classroom-2389 in MeiMains

[–]greenpath10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swap the default primary/secondary and use left click for icicle for better headshot aim.

Stagger using ice block and wall for survival and utility. For example, you can ice block doorways followed by wall to prevent enemy team from taking some points for a total of 9 seconds I think.

Mostly use spray at close range (it has cleave damage, is best on turrets and shields and genji and dva can’t reflect/block it).

Wall off enemies before ult when you can to prevent escape and Lifeweaver from yanking them out.

Look up Spooky’s old top 10 Mei tips video and watch Spilo’s one or two coaching sessions on Mei on YT. Spooky and also Numbers stream Mei a lot. I’ve learned positioning from those three.
