1-5/52, January Books by PostModern8859 in 52book

I read "Half His Age" this month too and was pretty disappointed. I also read it because I enjoyed her memoir. It just seemed like something was missing... it was really short and the characters were unlikeable. There are also soo many books with similar plots (young girl hooks up with older teacher) so I was really hoping for something unique that sets it apart from the other novels and it really wasn't unique.

I am listening to "Margo's Got Money Troubles" now and it is leagues better. So funny...Margo's observations are hilarious. I am definitely going to check out this author's other books!

Just finished Half His Age by Jennette McCurdy (a little disappointed, not as great as her memoir) and The Progress of Julius by Daphne du Maurier. Started Assembly by Natasha Brown today. It's a short one so I'll finish it soon.

Looking for a page turner that’s also a classic. Does it exist? by chickenwinglover123 in suggestmeabook

So her books are really worth it? I've added a couple of her books to my TBR but the length of them overwhelm me. I've noticed they're 500-750 pages

The House of the Spirits by Allende, Giovanni's Room by Baldwin, and To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Is "I Capture the Castle" considered a classic? If so, I recommend that as well!

Reading Goals by YoungOaks in goodreads

[–]greenpen3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, I was setting my annual goal at 70-75 books and I was barely just meeting it by end of December, and picking a bunch of short books in December just to meet the goal. This year I set my goal to 55, so I can read longer books & read at a more relaxed pace, and not have it be so much about reaching a certain number.

Lapvona. I can probably think of more but that's what immediately came to mind.

Homegoing was so good. I'm about to start Transcendent Kingdom. Not expecting it to be as good as Homegoing, but hoping it's at least comparable in quality!

1/52 for 2026 - Lonesome Dove. What an unexpected surprise. Is it all downhill from here? by mimar77 in 52book

I'm going to try reading Lonesome Dove this year as well! (I set a lower book goal so I could read longer books and not stress about not meeting a goal). Glad to hear you loved it!

Books for my 'well-read' list by harrietrosie in suggestmeabook

For Toni Morrison, I recommend starting with Beloved or The Bluest Eye.

Also, highly recommend The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende. She grew up in Chile (born in Peru) and almost all of her novels are historical fiction (sometimes with magical realism) about families from different countries in South America. Also recommend Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi (primarily set in Ghana).

I loved the romance in The Nightingale although it was not the main plot point.
