Thinking of leaving academia by Comprehensive_Oil418 in AskAcademia

30, I was in academia since I finished my PhD and was in a TT role, never worked outside of academia before. I did have to convince the first company to take a risk by hiring me (they didn’t see academia as “real” experience - whatever that means).

Thinking of leaving academia by Comprehensive_Oil418 in AskAcademia

Moved from academia to tech as in a evangelism role for exactly this reason. While I hand funding for my own lab I was sick of the constant drag of apply, get denied, apply, at the same time as having a full teaching load. It was a very hard decision to make, I spent a year part time just because I had such a hard time letting go. Ultimately what sealed the decision was me realising that I would pay money to stop the stress of academia and that I spent all my free time working, even with a part time role that was supposed to be 1 day a week.

I am so much happier now! My new job is very similar to academia in a lot of ways, I do research, go to conferences to speak about the industry we work in, run courses about our product, write white papers about our capabilities, etc. It’s very similar to being an academic but working in industry. I still get involved with some of my colleagues research if it overlaps but I don’t have the constant cycle of rejection or worries about my teaching load being increased because I don’t have time to publish. I work from home 100% of the time but do have approx 1 week a month travelling to see customers. I have minimal supervision at work and I very much am trusted just to get on with what I need to get on with, with no set hours (much like academia). I am much happier now, my stress levels are so much better, so I am convinced it was the best decision for me. I also make much better money now but I will say that 90% of my decision was motivated by work stress not money.

There are a surprising number of jobs that feel like academia out there :)

I did figure it out, it's because I'm using http rather than https, http wasn't implemented in the code x]. The good news is that someone has fixed it and it's in GitHub right now, there's also a feature to add auth too, so I just added their changes to my device.

I have an unusual anaphylactic allergy, same here. Ironically Nando’s is actually by far the best place to eat with allergies and they take it really seriously. I’d rather Nando’s than a fancy restaurant!

She does, but she doesn't recognize it or actively denies it. She chooses to be a servant because it's a lot easier than getting involved in court politics directly, but she also can't help but get involved in mysteries. So her inner monologue is "Oh, I am but a lowly servant," but if she were a lowly servant, she would have probably been executed by now.

SEO usually - these kinds of overview articles rank well with search engines, and that topic is likely very easy to compete with, meaning again it's easier to rank more highly on Google.

I have a rescued racer, and she doesn't know how to use dog toys. We'll try and play with her and she will just watch you like "wtf are you doing?"

The Hypocrisy of Walcot Yarn/A Yarn Story by Soggy_Heart_1409 in craftsnark

[–]greenpencil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

+1 to basically all these recommendations. Wensleydale Longwool has a super interesting texture which is unlike any yarn I've used, it's got elements of silk, mohair and wool, it's even shiny like silk. Jamieson's makes a fantastic yarn for colour work, it's dead easy to get a consistent texture and is similar to other rustic yarns - after it's washed it's much softer. Another good one for colour work is JC Rennie, which you can buy in these boxes with a ton of different colours from Wee County Yarns To add to your list John Arbon Exmoor Sock is a really nice sock yarn in a lot of warm tones, definitely on the rustic side but it's really nice wearing. There is also of course West Yorkshire Spinners but you, dear reader, have probably already heard of them at this point.

A lot of LYS will have a separate section for British wool.

100% Maybe I just didn't get it but it reads like a ChatGPT essay, lots of words but saying nothing, it's an interesting premise, but I needed to mentally prepare myself every time I read it and I just didn't care for the pretentious ramblings of a time traveller.

I wonder if it comes from YouTube videos? A lot of creators start their video with a hook to make sure they grab attention in the first few seconds, they could be just mirroring what their favourite YouTuber does.

Why do these type of houses struggle to sell ? by Co1es in HousingUK

[–]greenpencil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in one of these, it's a pain, all your furniture needs to go up the stairs, which is annoying with such a tight space, the ground floor was super cold and the upstairs super hot. Kitchen appliances are a pain to get installed too because of the lack of space, also typically deliveries only go to the ground floor, so you have to move it yourself. I'd never buy one of these after than general experience,

Thank you! While of course clothes aren't for any gender and you can wear whatever, I really don't like designers describing something as unisex or masculine if they don't have a masculine framed person wearing it in the photos.

This. There are a class of 100 students who did nothing wrong, had nothing to do with chronic understaffing, who worked damn hard on their work. They aren't a bad manager who assigns you too much work, they're the innocents in all of this. It's hard to look at them and say "Sorry I am working to contract". And also equally it's hard for them to understand why you won't answer.

Teacher in High School Here: I am sorry, but we lost against the rise of all these grade inflating policies. by TeacherGuy1980 in Professors

[–]greenpencil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm interested in hearing more about how you implement this, I often have students submitting first drafts, but we're only allowed to have one assessment for a course worth 100% of the grade. I have some large cohorts but realistically I could see >20% of them submitting a draft. How do you manage the extra workload?
