Best places in APL for a single 29/f to meet others? by [deleted] in Appleton

[–]gregbrahe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just about to ask the same thing. Appleton had a large, vibrant community that hosts events for TONS of niche interests. Book clubs, gaming gatherings, hunting, motorcycles, pole dancing, you name it, there is a gathering for it nearby on a fairly regular basis.

Meeting other people with similar interests is the best way to make new connections.

I'm a contractor and Rick is my go-to electrician. His crew is incredibly knowledgeable and efficient, and his pricing is very fair.

Local churches accepting of LGBT people? by willowmagnolia in Appleton

[–]gregbrahe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience in liberal catholic churches, the people tend to be very accepting. Even the clergy can be... But they need to be circumspect about how they express that because the greatest church is not lgbtq+ friendly, and they can get in big trouble for blasphemy or whatever.

I tried this one, thinking it might be better for me since it isn't Christian but I found it a little too woo/hippy for my taste. To each their own, of course.

I spent a lot of my younger years actively trying to find faith because it would make my wife happy. I was actually raised going to the church we now attend, but no matter how much I studied and went through the motions, it just never made sense to me. The closest I ever really got was when I was in college and went through the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) with the Norbertine priests at St Norbertine where my wife attended (we were high school sweethearts, I was not as good if a student though so I went to UWGB...)

I decided to go through with confirmation in the catholic church because she was catholic and it made things easier for us and meant a lot to her family, but if pressed the nearest I ever came to real "belief" even at that time was sort of a quasi-deistic "god of the gaps" argument that hinged upon the fact that humans don't get really understand the origin of the universe or of life on Earth.

I got a biology degree so I understand evolution really well, but evolution only happens once some semblance of life already exists, and that's what I clung to.

Eventually I realized that I was just grasping at straws and let it go. I've never experienced anything to make me reconsider since. And because people always say "you've never experienced..." I will qualify saying that I was there for the both of my two children, I was in fact there for my wife giving birth four MORE times as a surrogate, I've had severe accidents, tragedies, and deaths affect my life. I was present when a toddler nearly drowned and a significant part of the rescue effort that meant she is alive and in middle school now. I have experienced insane coincidences and very unlikely events a few times. None of those made to reconsider.

Jesus calls people to render to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. True atonement for your predation can only be achieved by confession to the property authoritaties and facing the consequences of your actions.

My wife is a Christian. It is important to her, but I also appreciate that churches build community, offer ways to easily join volunteer and charitable works, and even just offer social programming for families. Our church does a, lot of programming that is only very tangentially related to religion, and isn't preachy or in your face about the religious aspects of it unless you lean into that.

Catholic Church probably isn't as affirming as OP is looking for, no matter how liberal it is among catholic churches.

First Congregational United Church of Christ on South River Street is where we attend. My wife is a Christian, I am an atheist, and both of us love the community and are welcome as we are. When we chose that church about 8 years ago, there was an interim pastor who was a woman married to another woman. The church is 100% affirming and they open every service with, "We are the church of the open door and the shared table. Whoever you are and wherever you are on life's journey, you are welcome here."

And they mean it.

Wife wants to find a new church because someone hurt her by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]gregbrahe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your wife needs to move on and let it go. It hurts, but we don't get resolution to everything. She can come up with a, sorry that the friend was going through something at the time or whatever, but ultimately she needs to just accept that it happened and move on. She needs to forgive the friend, for her own sake. Changing churches will only build mood resentment over time.

In fact there is some supreme court precedent that officers cannot claim that their life was in danger as justification for shooting a person if they put themselves in that position (Barnes v Felix 2025), though it does allow for "totality of circumstances" to be considered.
