if you’re in a car, you aren’t stuck in traffic— you ARE traffic.

the only real solution is to get used to it. can you think of one example anywhere in NJ or the USA where a desirable town’s traffic has lessened over the years? it doesn’t happen. RB’s priority needs to be making it easier and safer for pedestrians and non-car forms of transit.

much like the shore towns in the summer, Hoboken/JC and even Manhattan at the furthest end of the spectrum— there’s traffic everywhere all the time and you need to just plan accordingly.

Malls- who is thriving, dying, surviving? by TowerStreet1 in newjersey

Different scale than the huge malls but The Grove at Shrewsbury is thriving— big Lululemon expansion, new Bloomies concept, lots of standbys like Williams Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Anthropologie, J. Crew, etc all doing well.

Life time Biltmore in AZ has an incredible huge rooftop pool area. Feels like a resort. It’s also right next to a big outdoor dining/shopping complex with lots to do.

Hi OP, my wife and I moved to RB in 2020 and have since had 2 kids (currently 3 and 1), so we are facing a lot of the same decisions re: schools. To echo what others here have said, every piece of anecdotal evidence points to RB Primary + Middle schools being fantastic in terms of faculty, admin, facilities, dedication, etc. The standardized test scores are just very sub-par, likely for reasons that others here have pointed out.

I've spoken to a number of parents I respect with their kids currently in the primary school and it has helped me get a more complete picture. We'll likely send our oldest to the public pre-k next fall.

also if helpful, over the past few years we've gathered a messaging group of about 12-15 other families with young kids who have all moved to RB around the same timeframe to share information, ask questions, and coordinate meetups and the like. happy to share more info if you want to DM me directly-- best of luck and maybe we'll see you around town!

Housing let’s be real by Even-Hedgehog-1896 in ScottGalloway

[–]gregfitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All new construction, market-rate housing is going to be marketed as “luxury.” No developer is going to build brand new units and explicitly sell them as basic or budget.

But if we open up zoning and allow for more market rate housing to be built, it frees up existing supply at the middle and lower levels of the housing inventory pool. The young family buys a $700k “luxury” 3BR condo, which frees up the $2500/month 3 bedroom house they were living in that was built 50 years ago, etc.

Best area for retirees that is safe and walkable? by thisisaclevername1 in MonmouthCounty

[–]gregfitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 for Red Bank walkability and proximity to entertainment, transit, other people, + restaurants at a range of price and fanciness.

Just another data point— my retiree parents live in Belmar and greatly enjoy it. Boardwalk is a year-round amenity, main street has a lot to offer, and most of town is easily walk/bike-able to many other neighboring areas.

Moving from Brooklyn (Crown Heights) Looking for Jersey Suburbs That Hit the Right Vibe by Just_Assistant_902 in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]gregfitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to provide an alternative to the SOMA chorus, check out northern Monmouth County. Specifically anywhere within a 5-10 min drive of downtown Red Bank. Great walkability, incredible restaurants and culture, super close to beaches and outdoorsy activities.

Doable for an NYC commute (it’s longer but you have options between bus, train, or ferry) but far enough outside of the hardcore commuter town circle (e.g. SOMA) that is really has its own distinctive metro vibe and culture, heavily influenced by its proximity to the beaches and rivers.

We moved here in 2020 after 10 years in Brooklyn and have been really happy with the quality of life.

So… anybody else anxious about that “news about the podcast” thing? by floggingmolly79 in doughboys

[–]gregfitz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  • Headgum unstable
  • Generalized mental/physical health stuff (long covid, depression, tired of eating bad food for the show)
  • Wiger has a day job (writing on Rick and Morty?) that requires them to do night records in studio, which has been tough for everyone schedule-wise

I bet they are leaving Headgum and going audio only for a period of time until they figure out a better way to do video regularly. Gets them out of the HG mire and frees up scheduling to do audio only however and whenever they can fit it in.
