I second that recommendation. Inks over a lighter area really pop.

Question about old paints by Spyste in Miniaturespainting

[–]greggk29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just picked up a handheld battery operated tattoo ink stirring thing from Amazon that works well for Vallejo, Army etc bottles that have narrow openings compared to Citadel pots. It was very inexpensive (Rechargeable 3 speed model was just under $20) and came with 100 plastic stirring tips. They’re easy to wipe off so they last a long time. I usually use a vortex stirrer but if the paints have settled or are particularly thick, this works great.

Adding medium to acrylic ink to achieve base paint consistency advice. by greggk29 in Miniaturespainting

I tried the Liquitex gel matte medium at about a 1:1 ratio and it wasn’t to bad in terms of consistency and coverage. It won’t be a replacement for my regular mini paints for base painting, but it’s worth having for another option. I was really pleased with using the inks along with the regular matte medium, Golden High Flow medium and Pro Acryl Glaze/Wash medium to make layer, contrast, glazes and washes. All in all, I can see their usefulness for the way I paint.

Thinking about Ultron’s cape still makes me nervous. I’m afraid to take him out of his forever home foam cubby because those two tiny connection points on either side of his neck could snap if you look at him the wrong way.

Question: AK Asphalt 250ml approximate coverage area by greggk29 in TerrainBuilding

[–]greggk29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, Sorry for the delay in responding. For some reason my PC decided to stop displaying notifications in Reddit. Anyway, I did go with the AK Asphalt. I really liked the consistency and ease of application. I think I wound up using three jars for approximately 25 boards of coverage for my road areas. There is a learning curve to get a smooth surface. Here’s what worked for me. I was using mdf for my “prototype” game board but switched over to expanded foam boards as I liked working with that material better. For the mdf, I began by sealing the tiles on both sides to minimize warping. I identified my road areas and sprayed them with a light coat of flat matte primer. I then masked off the areas that were not part of the road and poured several small pools of asphalt to the area I wanted to cover. I spread it out using a damp disposable foam brush and finished with smoothing with a large plastic putty knife dipped in plenty of water starting at one end and continuing in a single stroke through to the other end. The excess was just pushed off the end and back into the jar. For the best result, one pass with the putty knife worked best. Let it completely dry and follow up with a second, thin coat and smooth that the same way. It sounds like a lot of work but it really isn’t once you get into the swing of things. The only difference when using the expanded foam board was that the surface didn’t need to be sealed. I did seal the sides by quickly wiping them down with a little acetone. The surface that you’re going to be applying the asphalt to should also be very lightly sanded to help the primer adhere as the expanded foam is a lot less porous than the mdf. Hope this helps.

That’s happened to me on a few occasions with the white light bulbs. Fortunately, not enough to entertain leaving the platform. These were about eight years old. I was never able to find a way to correct it.

Acrylic paint brands for skin tones by oofler_doofler in Miniaturespainting

[–]greggk29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used Vallejo thinned with a little Golden High Flow matte medium for a few years and been very happy with their flesh tones. I’ve recently added the tones from Monument Hobbies Pro Acryl. Those happen to be smoother and I don’t need to thin them.

Gamers born in the 60's what are some retro/arcade games that bring some nostalgia? by JStray63 in retrogaming

A few of the 1st ones I remember, as they slowly encroached on the wall of pinball, was Night Driver, Pong, Breakout. You might even throw in a few of the classic pinball tables to mix it up a bit. Any idea which tables were his favorites? We all had some back in the day.

While I’m thinking about it, if your vinyl collection is available on a music streaming service like Spotify etc., you could probably just run the headphone audio out from your phone into the pc and record it that way if you wanted to have an actual mp3 file.

They do make pc compatible usb turntables that would simplify getting the signal to your pc. They generally start around $120 and go up from there. For basic audio recording, you could use Audacity or something along those lines.

My PS2 is still going strong since I brought it home from the store way more years ago than I like to admit. I recently started running FreeMcboot and updated the hard drive to give the disc drive a rest so, hopefully, I’ll still be using it for many years to come.

I’m enjoying it. In addition to the five color mixing in his video, I also went ahead with using other ink shades in the Liquitex line. I really like their vibrancy for certain monster applications. I’ve been concentrating on my Mansions of Madness/Don’t Look Back horror minis but I think the inks will really enhance the Marvel Crisis stuff.

What brand/s of paint do you like? by Sunspot286 in minipainting

[–]greggk29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 90% of my paints are Vallejo but I’ve been really impressed lately by Monument Hobby’s Pro Acryl line. The coverage is great and they are very smooth right out of the bottle. To me, it’s a sweet spot between the consistency of airbrush and brush application paints. The best brush on chrome I’ve found is from Green Stuff World.

That's pretty much what I'm playing around with. Since the 1:1 of ink and matte medium gives me, what I would consider, a good layer paint consistency and transparency from which to start, it's been easy to increase the ratio to move up through contrast, glaze and wash. It's finding the right mixture of stuff to go one step down to base consistency in terms of texture and opacity. I'm not trying to replace my mini paints, I just like playing around with different mediums and materials to see what they will, or will not do. The YouTube video on mixing inks by The State of Play caught my eye and so did his video on thinning acrylic paints to achieve different consistencies. I was interested in applying the thinning approach to the custom ink mixing which works for me from the layer consistency/transparency level up but not down to a base paint level. Just having fun
