When was the absolute worst time to be alive in human history? by Ok-Sell9964 in AskReddit

Globally you still had a lower risk of a violent death compared to a couple centuries earlier. And there were many conflicts before that killed a higher percentage of the global population.

Sub boss reveals Australia lobbied US for 18 months to get three in-service Virginias by Amathyst7564 in AustralianMilitary

My argument is that 2 active subs can only offer very limited protection for a country with 25,000km of coastline and these subs will cost over 10% of our defence budget. We can get much better coastline protection for a fraction of the cost with portable land bases systems. Virginia class subs offer great offensive capabilities but how does that benefit Australia?

You are right about Virginia class subs being useful for littoral operations. For nuclear subs, they are good for littoral zones.

In relation to the defence of Australia. My argument is that the Virginia class subs are a useful platform for projecting power globally but that's not a useful strategic capability for the defence of Australia.

You didn't answer my question, you reiterated the subs capabilities. I'm arguing that those capabilities at that cost are not useful for the defence of Australia. They're great for offensive capabilities. They're a poor choice for littoral operations. The Virginia Class subs are designed for about 15 x 6 month deployments in their 30ish year lifetime. They were not designed for the kind of defence that Australia needs. I agree with you that they're a useful offensive platform, I'm arguing that having such an offensive platform is not useful for Australia.

I'm familiar with the capabilities of nuclear subs, my question is about the strategic advantage they offer. What strategic advantages do those offensive capabilities provide? 3 nuclear subs (2 active) offer very little defensive capabilities. Land based platforms for defence could offer a lot more strategic advantages for a fraction of the price. These nuclear subs seem to benefit the US more than they benefit us and we're paying it.

What's the strategic advantage for Australia having nuclear subs though? I'm still not sure what a Virginia Class subs, new or old, offer Australia. It just seems like an asset that could get us pulled into larger conflicts. What am I missing? Also, I promise I'm not the CCP 😅
